Creativity from any point of view. Pictures that amaze. Movies that inspire.

Stimulate your creativity. The Nikon D5100 offers a host of new photographic and video tools that deliver superior performance and exceptional image quality with class leading versatility. With 16.2 megapixels, a swivel Vari-Angle LCD monitor, Full HD movie capabilities, new Effects Mode and new HDR setting, you hold the power and performance to capture beautiful moments and the freedom to get creative.

Creativity From Any Point Of View
Designed to take pictures or record D-Movies from unique viewpoints, the large 3? super sharp 920,000-dot Vari-angle LCD monitor allows for versatile high quality viewing and playback. Try a high angle for overhead images, waist level for candid shots or a low vantage point for a look from ground level as well as for the fun of taking self-portraits.

Express Yourself
Whether taking still pictures or recording Full HD movies, use the Effects Mode to add a creative touch to your images. Select from the amazing array of special effects such as Selective Color, to isolate any color within a scene or Night Vision to capture details in places too dark for your own eyes. Try High Key to create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere or emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key, or Miniature Effect, which makes a scene look like a miniature scale model! There are countless ways to take your imagination and images to the next level. In extreme high contrast light situations, the all-new HDR setting makes sure you get a good photograph by creating a composite image that brings out more details with less noise and richer color gradation. As your skills develop, you will find more ways to not only take incredible pictures and movies, but also make them truly stand out.

Tell better stories
The D5100 delivers exceptionally high-quality movie performance due to its Full HD capability, the latest in Full-time autofocus takes the guesswork out of tracking your subjects while in motion. The camera has ergonomically placed Live View and D-Movie start buttons for 20 minutes of uninterrupted recording time.Take your picture-taking and movie-making potential to impressive new levels with in-camera editing and creative controls. You have the freedom to choose the start and end points of your footage, and sound recording capabilities are also provided ? including stereo (with optional microphone).

Stunning Image Quality in a Class Of Its Own
Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image-processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range of ISO 100 to 6400 with reduced noise which enables you to take pictures at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld photographs and Full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

Speed and Performance That Delivers
With high-speed continuous photos at approximately 4 frames per second, you'll capture the most important moments and with D5100s large optical viewfinder you get accurate and a precise view in every situation. You'll get a precise view in every situation. Plus, the D5100s 11-point AF system provides flexibility to compose the shot you want ensuring your subject is captured sharply wherever it's located in the frame. Working together with the Scene Recognition System, the camera can keep your main subject in focus even if the composition changes using Nikon's exclusive 3D-tracking.

Comments about Nikon D5100 DX-format Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm VR Lens:

I find this overall a great camera for serious hobbyist photographers, it does leave a little to be desired with user interface buttons (not as many buttons as I would like, personal preference)

But for a mid range camera system it blows the socks off of most other brands.

If you want a high quality photograph at less than professional camera prices get this camera.

Comments about Nikon D5100 DX-format Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm VR Lens:

Great all around starting professional camera, only about 200$ more than the D3100, just for 200, it gives you a greater ability to capture with Flexability in many areas. Customizable settings is deff. a plus. It's what you can expect out of a low-mid DSLR Camera. I use a SB-700 in combination with this camera, which exploit the cameras abilities with a great extent. Using the external flash superbly extends the battery life when using flash (RAW file saving).

Comments about Nikon D5100 DX-format Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm VR Lens:

I am an old school semi-pro photographer that finally made the leap from film to digital. (The convenience of cell phone cameras combined with age added to the delay). After many months of research I decided to go with the Nikon D5100. I've had some experience with a D40, D90, D3000 and a Cannon 7d by borrowing these systems from various friends on occasion. I'm glad to have waited for the D5100 because it seems to be faster or equal to these other models. What attracted me the most to the D5100 were the reviews mentioning the similarities to the D7000's internal electronics and the backward compatibility to some of my old school Nikon manual lenses. I'm having a lot of fun with all of the various effect features, the convenience of the automation, yet I'm still doing a lot of work in the manual mode. I guess best of all is not having to wait for processing to view your work..., yep I'm really old school. I was a bit disappointed when I received a notice from Ritz Camera that the system had to be "back-ordered". Someone must have worked really hard over the holiday - I was pleasantly surprised that they ended up meeting their initial estimated delivery date so these guys are really on it. Thank you Ritz!

My experience with my NIKON D-200, and subseqent on-going reviews of the latest line of NIKON DSLR's led me to purchase a D-5100 for my daughter. She was raised in a family with photo enthusiasts and has long watched the photos I have done with great interest. Now, with a new family of 2 children, and seeing that many times purchasing a photographer's works may not be much different than your own led the BOTH of us to conclude the D-5100 was an excellent starting point. Ease, superb photo quality in a variety of lighting situations, action, comfort and transport ease (lighter than my D-200) has provided exactly the PHOTO EXPERIENCE for my daughter! You just cannot bear a NIKON!!

Comments about Nikon D5100 DX-format Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm VR Lens:

I have been looking for a great first time dslr and was torn between this and the Canon t3i. I borrowed a friends t3i for a couple of weeks and purchased this figuring I could return it if I didn't like it. I HAVE NEVER LOVED SOMETHING SO MUCH IN MY LIFE. There is minor lag time with live view, which we are all spoiled and use these days, but when using the view finder pictures are instantaneous. I have had no blur etc while photographing my very fast, active children. Best of all is the minimal editing required, unlike the t3i. With the t3i I was constantly having to correct white balance etc, it was considerably slower, and I had many blurry photos. Everyone I have shared my photos with has noticed the amazing quality and difference from my old point and shoot (obviously). Even friends with dslr's already are converting!!!! It also takes amazing low light pictures!!! For those of us who love to photograph our sleeping children :)The battery life is amazing!!!! twice as many pictures as the t3i. And last but not least it is a little smaller and more comfortable in my hands.
