Comments about Nikon D800 FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Nikon really hit it out of the park for the money with this camera. It sets a new standard for accurately WYSIWYG photography. It combines incredible detail with superb color fidelity with excellent dynamic range, all in a lightweight (relatively) package that is totally flexible.
But that flexibility comes at a price of complexity. The menu system, once you understand the logic, is easy to follow but very extensive. There is thus a big learning curve for this camera.
Even after you learn the menu options, re-setting things quickly in the field is no easy task unless you have photographic memory (ok, pun). You can pre-program a series of custom settings, but even these can be a bit tricky to follow. But going from programmed auto to various stages of manual is an easy task, and you can program some of the camera's buttons for shortcuts.
I mentioned finicky focus because it will hunt if you try to auto focus on homogenous subjects without lines or other detail. Once you realize this you can work around it. But it can be annoying at times.
The bottom line is that this is a state of the art camera for the serious enthusiast or professional. It is not a camera for the novice and probably not for the occasional shooter either in terms of cost benefit.
The large file size will also present some issues. Not all software will work with these files at the moment if you shoot in raw mode, although Adobe products have a raw converter that works and Nikon supplies a viewer (View X2) and a modifier (Capture NX2) is available separately. Be sure to upgrade to the latest versions of the software or you will have problems, especially with Adobe products if you try and work the NEF files in LR4 or Photoshop (they won't be recognized).
If you want incredible photographs that represent what your eye sees with great accuracy, this is your camera!

Comments about Nikon D800 FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Due to the extreme power drain, the batteries do not last very long.
There is a green cast in the LCD Screen during live view, which makes it difficult to correctly balance settings for shots.
THe FX lens I am using is not designed for any filters, or even a glass lens shield, only the plactic lens cover.
After a full day of shooting jobs, my right arm is done, due to the extra weight of this camera.
You already know the PROs, i.e., you just can;t beat the value this camera represents for the money.
The competition definitely got caught off-guard this time.
Kudos to Nikon!

Cons

Comments about Nikon D800 FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
For the past 4 years I've used a D300. While the D300 is a good introduction to digital photography, the D800 is a gateway to professional grade photography. I went down to the harbor and tested the 2 cameras side-by-side, using an array of different settings (ISO, metering, Adtive D-Lighting, etc.). As expected, the D800 was consistently superior. It does a much better job of nailing the correct exposure. Photographic quality is excellent. When you enlarge the photos, you will not believe the sharp level of detail.
Pros
- Auto focus
- Features
- ISO
- Quality
- Use ability
Cons
- File size
Best Uses
- Fashion
- Free Lance
- Journalism
- Weddings
Comments about Nikon D800 FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
this is definitely worth the upgrade from your d7000 , d5000 , or 7d !
be sure to up grade ram in your mac or pc
and have plenty of file space this images are beautiful & heavy space usage
every thing you ever needed in ONE body.
it was a simple transition from the d7000 cause ive always shot manual.
auto focus is dead on & fast even in LOW light !!!!!
i recommend the 50 1.8 as a walk around lens on this body !
