Nikon introduces the new D700 digital SLR camera featuring a 12.1-effective megapixel Nikon FX-format sensor that measures 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of 35mm film. Benefiting from Nikon's legacy of imaging technology innovation, the D700 offers both advanced and professional photographers stunning image quality, accurate color reproduction and revolutionary low light performance.
Nikon's flagship FX and DX-format cameras, the D3 and D300 respectively, established new benchmarks for digital image quality, speed, and unmatched ISO performance. The D700 maintains this new measure with exceptional overall image quality, broad tonal range and depth, and extremely low noise throughout its native ISO range of 200 to 6400. The Nikon FX-format cameras have teamed with Nikon's lineup of DX-format models to offer photographers unprecedented advancements in performance and versatility along with the freedom to choose the format that best serves their needs. The introduction of the D700 offers an important new option to photographers who need the overall performance and imaging perspective Nikon FX-format cameras offer. The legendary Nikon FX-Format CMOS sensor The D700 offers a versatile base ISO range from 200-6400 but can be expanded to range from ISO 100 (Lo-1) to 25,600 (Hi-2) affording photographers the new-found confidence to shoot in the widest variety of lighting conditions from the brightest midday sun to dim interiors. Images previously thought to be impossible to create without complex lighting set-ups or lengthy post-processing are now captured easily and faithfully with the D700, unleashing new and diverse shooting possibilities. Also new to the D700 is Nikon's first self-cleaning system designed for the FX-format sensor. Utilizing four distinct vibration frequencies, the D700 frees image degrading dust particles from the sensor's optical low-pass filter at start-up, shut-down or on demand. As an added benefit, the mirror box and entire shutter mechanism are constructed of materials that resist creating debris that can affect image purity. Fastest speed and autofocus in its class The D700 offers one of the fastest and most accurate advanced AF systems on the market today. Nikon's Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor module features 51 AF points and the ability to use 3D tracking to focus and lock-on a moving subject. The 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors can be used individually or in groups, with the option for Single Area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of either 9, 21 or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D Focus Tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses scene color content and light information to accurately track the subject. Intelligent features for sophisticated performance Photographers also have the option to enhance their pictures during or after capture with the Picture Control System and Active D-Lighting. Nikon's Picture Control System enables users to adjust their images to pre-set parameters such as Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome that apply tweaks to image sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, overall tone and saturation. D-Lighting uses localized tone control technology to further optimize highlight and shadow detail while also maintaining natural contrast, giving photographers the ability to capture more perfectly exposed images, even in unusual lighting conditions. Active D-Lighting lets photographers choose from various intensities during capture, while a new Automatic mode also applies varying levels of D-Lighting as, and when needed, to enhance photos while shooting. Enhanced Live View modes and viewfinder While using Live View to compose or review images and settings, users will appreciate the ultra-high resolution 920,000-dot VGA, three-inch TFT LCD monitor with tempered glass that provides a wide 170-degree viewing angle. The large monitor is remarkably effective when confirming the focus with enlarged playback images. The camera also outputs a video signal to an HD television using the new smaller HDMI-C standard, which is an excellent solution for workshop demonstrations or shooting tethered for clients. Photographers will also be able to compose images easily using the wide and bright viewfinder that features an eye-level pentaprism with high refraction index and provides a 95 percent frame coverage with 0.72x magnification. Each of the 51 AF points, as well as a framing grid, can also be superimposed on the finder screen to suit the photographer's personal preferences. Rugged construction and durability The shutter unit employs an assembly made of a new composite carbon fiber and Kevlar hybrid material. Tested on fully assembled cameras, the D700's shutter unit has been proven through 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The self-diagnostic shutter constantly monitors and maintains shutter precision to ensure peak performance. Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I purchased this camera after using the D70 for 4 years and was trying to choose between a D200, D300, or D700 and price was a factor I'm glad I overlooked. The D700 is amazing - sharp, luminous photos, a sturdy heavy body, and I love the zoom option on the display. I check often to make sure my photos are in focus and sharp and this helps time and again. Even the on-camera flash is great - with a diffuser, it has saved me a few times when I don't have an off-camera flash to help with low light. Photos at 1600 ISO still clear and crisp. This camera has earned its cost many times over in the year I've had it and I've had no reason to even think of needing an upgrade. It's a solid investment for anyone wanting to take high quality photos for semi professional or professional use.

Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
My review may be a little bias since I am a Nikon photographer since 1966 when I bought my Nikon F. I always like Nikon design, construction, quality and engineering. I am still able to use my 50mm F1.4 Nikkor and 55mm F3.5 Micro-Nikkor lens on the D700. Nikon has protected my investment.
That said, I expect my camera to perform well at all photographic situations - from still life to fast actions. D700 delivers.
Some of the features I like are low noise at high ISO, Active-D and multiple exposures. Still experimenting the features.

Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I've taken to using this camera more and more over the D300, even though I miss the lesser cameras 1.5 crop. Image quality from the D700 is better in most every way - especially at high ISO. This is saying a lot since the D300 is pretty darned good. Perfectly exposed, low ISO, sharp images from the D300 are indistinguishable from images from the D700. However, the D300 is much more finicky with exposure and white balance and it also seems to have less dynamic range. D700 Auto focus is a bit faster and more accurate, too. The only thing I don't like about the D700 is the 95% viewfinder. For many purposes this is not a big deal but it does make precisely composing landscapes and such much more difficult. Viewfinder accuracy is not the best, either, I've found. Often best to use live view for accurately composing if it is critical and you want to keep every pixel (without cropping). I do use the pop up flash both for fill and as a commander for my SB-800 (works great). I also like having the ability to travel light when not needing the MB-D10 and the ability to use a variety of batteries (such as AA's) which can be very handy when travelling. In all I highly recommend the D700, for most people who aren't working pro's, even over the D3.

Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I replaced my D70s with the D700. The low light sensitivity is great. I used a trip to India to 'justify' the upgrade. I thought I might be shooting a few nighttime pictures here and there. What really made it possible to capture great pictures of wildlife in the forests was to push the ISO to 2000-6400 to get my shutter speed up to capture some great images! I shot lots of street scenes at night, and didn't push past 6400. The 700 feels like a tank compared to the 70s. It feels very sturdy. Having the option to use old glass is neat. The FX aspect ratio is great with wide angle shots. I sold all my DX glass. HDMI connector is very nice to have. The great LCD screen lets you get instant gratification, and people were amazed when I showed them the pictures I was taking on it.
It is a joy to use.
The only negatives are very minor- getting the battery in and out is not as smooth as it could be. Worry when changing memory cards you could rip the door off if not carefull.

Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I just started using this camera for two weeks, and I'm in love! I have the D-70s as well, and same lens on the D-700 just cannot compare. Besides the full frame, the light sensitivity on the 700 is awesome. I would buy this camera again and again!

Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
With the D700, the flexibility in the menus gives the user so much variation of how to handle shots it get the creativity flowing in your mind. For a camera to double the qulaity of an image it has to quadruple the megapixels, so unless a camera has 48 mpx it really is not that much sharper in the real world, real print size situation. I have a D200 and D300 also that I still use. these cameras are build strong with alloy metal frames for strength and alignment through hard use and time.

Comments about Nikon D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I labored significantly between this and the new Canon 5DMKII ( My current mainstay system/camera has been the Canon EOS-1D MK II ) I was reluctant to purchase the newer 1D MKIII due to some initial question regarding focus performance. In that time Nikon came on strong with the D3 and having been able to use them from time to time I began to have high-ISO envy (it was that my 1D was the envy of D2X users I count as friends) When the D700 came out it was nearly as if Nikon delivered the camera that was on my mind. Pros will scoff at the built in flash but I'll tell you, it's extremely welcome for the candid stuff you may need it for and as a commander to control the SB900 off camera - FORGET IT, it's staggering what you can do (use the SB900 for bounce and the on-board one for catchlight-fill)
The functionality is also pretty amazing as far as controls and ability to customize.
It may be that I am used to the EOS 1D ergonomics but I find some of the controls to be placed in a less than ideal manner, like using the control dials has me changing my hand positions and certainly this would be different person to person, but the D3 and Canon 1D series seem far more "form-fit" to the hand... and I still think I prefer Canon's dial positions.
I find the images stunning, the LCD brilliant and the Nikon flash system notably more consistent and predictable than Canon's.
I'm keeping my Canon gear as I do feel these two companies will leap-frog each other for some time, I see no reason to lose thousands of dollars selling my Canon L-glass.
