Comments about Targus DEFCON Video Port Key Lock (VPKL):
I just got the Video port Lock today. So my review here is just based on my initial use of the lock. It works fine. There is a bit of "springyness" when unlocking the lock. The key jumps out you a bit.
When you purchase this lock, you would realise that there are two pins sticking out on the video connector. The lock is supposed to be attached to the pins. I expected that the two pins would be covered, however, only one pin is covered while the other is exposed.
This does not hamper the purpose of the lock whereby it fully secures one pin thus a thief is unable to unscrew the pin. As a result the lock remains attached to the video port.
It is possible that I am doing something wrong at the moment. I will do some further examination when I get home since I am in the library. While I was in the library I left the laptop attached to the lock and took a long walk about an hour or so. When I came back my laptop was still there. I don't know if anyone noticed the lock but at least my laptop was not stolen. So in that respect the lock does work.
Please do remember that the laptop isn't impervious to everything. I really horrible minded person can still kick your laptop and cause physical damage to it. Thus rendering the laptop useless. At least no one would have stolen it. The lock is ideal for thieves who marks someone and thus at an unsuspecting moment (probably you just stepped into the bathroom) the thief casually swipes the laptop and cheerfully walks away. Here is where the utmost benefit comes into play, the thief now has to bypass the lock system implemented. This results in a decrease risk of theft of the laptop.
It is apparent that the lock is ideal in locations where person are present. For example if someone should walk up to the laptop with a bolt cutter, surely persons would know that this someone does not own the laptop. And which idiot is really going to do that when persons are around. It is also possible for someone to use nippers, pliers and a knife to cut the security cable. This is bit more discreet than using the bolt cutter, however persons may see the thief doing such, which may result in the proper authorities being called.
It is good to remember that the lock isn't 100% thief proof. So if you are working for the C.I.A., there are persons who would want your laptop and of course there would exist professionals who can pick these types of locks. I wouldn't recommend this lock for secret agent persons. Everyone else can purchase this lock since it is very affordable .
The small downside is that you have to carry about 2 components, that is the lock cable and the video port connector. If you happen to be forgetful as I am then you are bound to forget the video port connector somewhere.
I surely recommend this lock over the combination types since combination types tend to change combinations spontaneously thereby locking out the owner. I read about the spontaneous combination changes on the Amazon website.
One more thing if you are buying this lock make sure you have the video port which has has inlets for 15 female pins.
