My wife paints china and uses this to trace patterns, to transfer to plates. The work surface is ample so things don't hang over the sides as she works. The light weight of the product is due in part to the fact that the top is plastic not glass. You would not be able to cut directly on the plastic with an xacto knife since it would scare it. The light is very adequate to see things with good detail
