Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens image

(based on 59 ratings)
Brand: Canon
Located in: Lenses For Canon
This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. This new EF-S telephoto lens with great features delivers excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

I bought this lens about 8 months ago. I was low on cash but wanted a lens with a focal length in the 100~300mm range. I opted for this one. I assumed that it would be an extension on my 18-55mm kit lens that came with my Rebel XSi. I have been sorely disappointed. The lens is able to zoom a great distance, but every picture comes out grainy. I have only been able to print a small number acceptable picture from the lens. The lens is adequate during bright light conditions, such as an afternoon baseball game or children at a park. I plan to sell this and upgrade to a lens with higher quality glass.

This is a great lens for most occasions. I did find that focusing with IS on was bit slow when shooting very fast action shots so I just turn it off for those shots.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

I bought this lens for my Canon EOS Xti and used it at a family wedding for the first time. I was impressed with it's ability to shoot distant photos in a fairly low light setting. Daytime action photos are fantastic but not as useful in lower light with any movement. Obviously this shouldn't be the lens of choice in those settings. But it far exceeded my expectations given the low price, the lens performed as well as any of the pro lenses I have used within the same catagory.

I just received this as a gift for Christmas. I currently have the "nifty fifty" and the kit lens, this is a welcome addition. Currently only using it for wildlife (birds, squirrels) in my backyard, but am excited to get out and really try it out. Yes, as most will say it's not as sturdy as an L, but you aren't paying for an L. For the casual user, hobbyiest I love this lens.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

I have taken this camera lens along with my Rebel XS model to Central America for a stay at my grandfather's coffee farm. I took many great photos of some of the most exotic flowers and other amazing wild life there. This lens took great close-ups and great land-scape shots; better than I imagined it would. The only downside is, for some wide-angle shots I would have to swap the lens back to the 18-55 mm, but that wasn't too often. All-in-all this is a great add-on/upgrade for any Canon camera.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

When looking to add a lens to the regular kit lens, it doesn't get any better than this lens, for this price. It is not going to rival the higher end L class lenses, but is also not going to be over [$]as well. For this price, you get a sturdy, fairly sharp lense, that can perform excellently in good light. You do really have to look deep at pictures to tell the difference between this and the[$]more expensive 70-300mm IS lens. This lens is the perfect companion to the 18-55 kit and will give you great shots, time and time again. Buy it, and a good size flash unit for the same price as just the 70-300mm lens. Use it and you will be happy.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

It's a great walk around lens and I was glad to get some good IS images of waterfalls at 1/10 of a second, hand-held, to make nice silky water streams.

Only downsides are focus kind of knocks around and is a little slow and filter ring rotates so using polarizer is difficult.

Its a great second lens and I am really happy with it, the only thing that bugs me about it is when attaching the hood or filters the focus lens twist straining the motor so end up switching the auto focus off so not to damage the motor when attaching then hood or filter but not a big deal just turn it back on after its attached , but yeah I love it .

Best Uses:

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

Although this lens may not be wide enough to be a great "walkaround" lens, it's so light that you could comfortably carry this all day. The Image Stablizer is magical for people like me who have a little hand shake. Pair this lens with the Canon 18-55mm IS lens in a little bag and you're ready for some walkin'. The two lenses together will probably still be lighter than the 28-135 or 17-85 and you'll cover more focal range. Pros probably are not buying this lens, but it's a great lens for the money and non-professional shooters will love this lens, guaranteed. Of course, you might be trading durability for lighter weight, but if you take good care of your equipment I don't see that being a big issue. It would be great if this lens had a macro function, but at this price point, you don't get everything.

I use this lens with my Canon XTI and I have no complaints. This is my first SLR and I'm not rich so this was the perfect lens for me and I love it. I am very happy with this purchase.

The image stabilization is ideal for a telephoto lens. I take mine to festivals where I can photograph performers from a fair distance away and I get great photos.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

This lense is amazing for the price at under $300. The autofocus is sometimes challanged and you MUST switch to manual focus in order to make adjustments. Other than that, I love this lense because the quality and clarity of the pictures is outstanding!
I bought this lense for my daughter to use with her rebel xt on a trip to Kenya and she got many fantastic photos of wildlife! I too have taken some awesome photos of wildlife including hummingbirds in flight. I have the canon 40D though so I want to purchase the canon 70-300 for myself but I can't afford it right now - it is approximately 2x the price. Bottom line: If cost is any issue, go with the 55-250!

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

I have a Canon Rebel xsi with a Canon EFS 17-85mm. This 55-250mm makes a perfect combination. The first lens is 27-135 (35mm equiv), and this lens is 88-400. Nice range and overlap. With image stabilization, I've gotten some great handheld shots at 400mm, and with 12 megapixels, I can crop them 50% to get 800mm equivalent zooms, still quite sharp.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

This lens offers a great value. I had been waiting to get an IS telephoto lens because of cost, and then Canon introduced this one. Sharp color, no vignetting, I have not been able to find anything to complain about. Some have commented on the plastic threads on the lens, but I always use a UV filter so there's no filters going on and off of the lens. For the price, I don't think you can get a better deal.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

I pretty much love this lens for the longer focal lengths. I don't find myself using as much at the shorter end, but the IS is great and I love being able to get in pretty close to objects from a distance. I would prefer a lens that opens a little wider, but for the price this is really a great lens and very versatile.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

Just got his yesterday in the mail..I have the Canon XTI 12mp and was looking for a zoom that would not break the bank and this was the best I could do .. I chose the 55-250 over the 70-300 because of the IS .. haven't been disappointed . .. I have not shot a lot yet with it but so far I'm happy with it .. I have shaky hands .. I did go and order a tripod.. but I think as time goes on I'll get used to it and be able to take zooms with the IS..

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

This lens is excellent choice when a light lens is desired on long hikes. It gives the same focal length as a much more expensive lens, but saves on the muscle needed to pack it. While it is a tad slower than the high priced version, the Canon 100-400mm L, it still gives good results in most situations.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

With the 35mm equivilent of 88-400mm this lens gets me in close. With the image stabilizer I don't worry about camera shake anywhere near what I did with my Olympus DSLR. The color and clarity are great. Focus is fast and sharp.

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

I purchased this lens for a good compromise in focal lengths to take with me on hikes. It is lightweight, fits in a fairly small camera bag, and produces great color on my Digital Rebel 300D. I am very pleased with its responsiveness. An added surprise was how well it does on close-ups. I will not have to switch lenses for my macro shots--blooms more than fill the frame at about 3 feet. Then, of course, the image stabilizer! Excellent! Instead of ruining all but 2 or 3 hand held shots at full zoom, all but 2 or three are now keepers. (Thanks for the great price on this worthy lens.)

Comments about Canon Canon 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 EF S IS Lens:

What a Great lens!! The return on investment is huge over the value of the lens. The IS lens is the only way to go if you are shooting at the full range and dont have a tripod. I have used this lens on my XSI while kayaking and biking. the pictures turned out great! Good for concerts as well when you dont have a tripod or trying to get a nice photo when the lighting is not perfect.
