The Cool-Light SL-1 lights images from a shooting distance as close as 2cm with the Coolpix 4500 and Coolpix 900 series of cameras, thanks to its flat-front design. The light is powered with two 3V CR2-type lithium batteries to provide approximately 6 hours of continuous lighting, and approximately 500 lux luminance, it can be optionally powered by most Coolpix AC adapters. The Cool-Light SL-1 attaches directly to the Coolpix 950, 990, 995 and Coolpix 4500 digital cameras, while a standard lens adapter ring is necessary for use with the Coolpix 5000, 885, 880 and 775 digital cameras.
The Cool-Light SL-1 macro ring lightis extremely portable. The light measures 2.8 x 3.6 x 0.8-inches and weighs approximately 2.8-ounces (without batteries) to offer photographers easy hand-held shooting operation.

when ambient light has too many shadows and i dont use my sc-28 ttl cable and full size speedlight, the sl-1 works great on my nikon p-5100. i leave the adapter on all the time as it protects the extended lens from bumps. in bright light the sl-1 will not fill in shadows and the full ring creats flat illumination. If you have a full size speedlight i-TTL compatible, buying a nikon sc-28 cable might be better ,cheaper, and give you better photographs, but the sl-1 is small and the reason you are using a compact camera, a larger camera and macro speedlight tends to be left at home. these are for compact cameras but the light is more than strong enough for macro distances of several inches.I use an sb-21B,sb-29,and R1(not on p5100) for technical documentation and just fun
