For years, I've been looking for an inexpensive digital camera that can take decent pictures of the night sky. This is the closest I've found. The controls are very well laid out, the programmable settings are easy to understand - in-camera editing is relatively easy. It's very, very good for the price, with one small problem.
It eats batteries like candy. A pair of heavy-duty alkalines will get you maybe 20 shots. Lithiums might get you about 40. Your best bet is to use rechargeable batteries, preferably 2400millamp rating or above. I got about 250 shots off a set of 2500mAh NiMH batteries, with lots of flash shots and some video. Don't know how NiCads would do - but from what I've found, this camera needs a STRONG battery, anything less than 2400mAh won't have much of a life.
As far as the image quality goes - I believe it's excellent, especially considering the price of the camera. Sensitivity is pretty good, with a maximum rating of ASA 400. This is sufficient, when combined with an improvised tripod, a long exposure time (8 seconds seems to be the maximum) and a dark night to get pretty clear pictures of constellations.
Would I recommend? Yes - very much. It would make a GREAT stocking stuffer, as long as you remember to include rechargable batteries!
That's not dust! F2.8, 8 seconds, ASA 400.
