Lumix 5 Megapixel Digital Camera with 10x Optical Zoom, MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer & High Sensitivity Mode

A Slim 10x Optical Zoom Using a Unique Prism - LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT LENS - The world''s first unique integration of a retractive lens with folded optics technology allows the zooming to occur horizontally within the camera. This makes it possible to pack a powerful 10x optical zoom (equivalent to a big 35 to 350mm lens on a 35mm camera) into a compact camera. The Extended Optical Zoom function, which magnifies the image with minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high-resolution CCD, boosts the zoom power to a maximum 12.5x.

Crisp, Clear Shots of Moving Subjects - The Venus Engine III provides a high sensitivity ISO 800 setting that captures images with minimal noise at full resolution. The higher ISO setting lets you use higher shutter speeds to minimize the motion blur that can occur when you''re shooting a moving subject, particularly in dim lighting. Even indoors, you can get crisp, clear, beautiful shots of children, pets and other subjects that won''t hold still.

Taking Hand Movement Out of the Picture with MEGA Optical Image Stabilization - All of us have taken a shot that we thought was focused perfectly, only to have it turn out blurry. The most common cause of this is hand movement. Digital cameras are wonderfully light and compact -- but for the same reason they can also be hard to hold still. Even pressing the shutter button can cause the camera to move. And most people use the LCD monitor (with arms outstretched)to frame a shot -- great for getting the shot you want, but most likely adds to the likelihood of hand movement. Basically, hand movement is a real concern anytime you''re taking a handheld telephoto shot, macro shot or self-portrait, or when shooting at night or in dim lighting.

The answer to the hand movement problem? An advanced optical image stabilizing system that we call MEGA Optical Image Stabilization. This system uses built-in gyrosensors to detect even tiny camera movement and then shifts a lens in the opposite direction to compensate. The system is completely optical -- it does not affect the CCD or image processing -- so you get sharp, clear images with minimal degradation. It lets you reduce the shutter speed more than 3 steps below the conventionally accepted hand movement limit, which is calculated as 1/focal length (1 divided by the focal length). It greatly expands what you can do with a handheld digital camera.

High Sensitivity Mode Helps Reduce Motion Blur - When there''s not a lot of light or you''re using a slow shutter speed, hand movement isn''t the only potential problem. There''s also motion blur -- the blurring that can result if your subject like children or pets move even a little in low lighting. That''s why we added a High Sensitivity mode4 that allows you to shoot at up to ISO 1600 by using the pixel-mixed readout method, effectively raising the shutter speed. It not only minimizes motion blur, it also lets you take clearer, sharper shots in dim lighting without using a flash. The picture quality is good enough for printing at the ordinary 4x6-inch (10 x 15 cm) size.

Rapid Focusing with Linear AF - Choose from several auto focus modes -- spot, 1-point (normal or highspeed), 3-point high-speed, and 9-point -- to suit the scene you''re shooting. The DMC-TZ1 also introduces a new Linear AF system, which has resulted in the achievement of an industry-leading fast auto focusing time. Not only the speed but also the noise of the motor is reduced and even the zooming while recording motion image is possible. Combined with a startup time of merely 0.95 seconds, this fast focusing lets you catch every shooting opportunity. Plus, the AF Assist Lamp helps when focusing in dimly lit places.

MEGA BURST Consecutive Shooting - Thanks to the Venus Engine III, the DMC-TZ1 has a release time lag as low as 0.006 seconds. The DMC-TZ1 can also fire off consecutive shots at a swift 3 frames per second, and offers Unlimited Consecutive Shooting so you can keep shooting until the SD Memory Card or built-in memory is full.

A Large, Bright 2.5-inch Diagonal High-Resolution LCD with High Angle Mode - With its 2.5-inch diagonal size and 207,000 pixels, this high-resolution LCD monitor makes it easy to see text and small thumbnail images. The pixelmixed readout method performed by the CCD increases the brightness level of the live image on the LCD, which greatly facilitates shooting in low lighting. If it''s difficult to see the display on a sunny day, simply press the Power LCD button and the display becomes about 40% brighter. The world''s first developed High Angle shooting function also provides easier viewing when you''re holding the camera high to shoot over the heads of people in front of you.

Versatility to Take on the Road
World Time Setting - If you select a travel destination, the camera calculates the time difference from the time in the clock setting and displays the local time.
Travel Date Setting - Input the time and date of your departure before you leave home, then use the DMC-TZ1 to capture all the best moments of your trip. When you view the photos later, the DMC-TZ1 will display them according to the day of the trip each photo was taken.
Calendar View - The DMC-TZ1 can arrange images you''ve shot by the day on which you shot them. This can be a big help when you have a large number of images to organize.
Three New Scene Modes - There are three new scene modes added especially for travel use: Aerial photo, Beach, and Underwater.
Optional Marine Case - Lets you shoot underwater at a depth of up to 130 feet. It''s also ideal for taking worry-free photos in the rain, at the beach, or on the ski slopes.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera, (Black)-2.5'' LCD:

I love photography and I love scrapbooking; both digitally and with paper/adhesive, etc. I feel so blessed to have found these two wonderful hobbies of photography and scrapbooking which work hand in hand to preserve my family's history; not only from present but also from the past and the future which lies ahead. It gives me comfort knowing that I will always have more material (photos = memories) to work with.

Who could ask for a better hobby? I do believe that I am blessed to be involved in the best and most fun of all hobbies around!

And I have to say that ever since my sweet husband gave me my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 for my birthday last year, my hobby has become even more pleasant. This is because my pictures are so much clearer and more beautiful all around! It's so easy to use too! I especially love the 10x optical zoom feature which is just awesome! I wouldn't give up my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 for anything. My 23-year old son has even asked for one for his birthday because he likes how mine works so well.

Thank you for making such an awesome camera, Panasonic. I'm now a true blue fan.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera, (Black)-2.5'' LCD:

I've had great luck with this camera. I'll admit it's my first digital camera. The 10X zoom is hard to find on a compact camera like this one. I've taken shots in dark places. Once you upload the photos to your computer, you can add brightness to make objects stand out more. They've come out much better that they would have on a film camera. The battery will last through about 100 photos before it has to be recharged. Take the charger with you of course on any vacation.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera, (Black)-2.5'' LCD:

I think this camera was well built to be the best camera for zoom because of its small body for the 10x feature. As an old Oylmpus D-560, I thought it had better picture quality (in color) without flash, even in dark scenes. Sometimes on the DMC-TZ1, when you see on the screen that you can actually see what you want to get but in a dark scene, you will just get a black or very darkk picture (without flash of course). i am so used to my old camera that I love taking picture without the flash.

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera, (Black)-2.5'' LCD:

Panasonic got off to a good start, but then took their technology a little too far. The Mega O.I.S is great, but can be harmful if you're looking for fine detail. Stay away from the high sensitivity mode unless you really, really want an image full of noise. Also, to avoid annoying lag you will need a high-speed memory card. A Sandisk Ultra II, or Lexar Platinum card should work quite nicely. Battery life is sub-par for this class of camera, or it is in my opinion. These problems aside, the TZ1 isn't a bad camera at all. It does have some nice features such as a histogram, and some control over white balance. If you're looking for a "compact" ultra-zoom, and have no need for manual controls the TZ1 should be perfect. It works great as my point-and-shoot when I don't want to lug around an SLR!

Comments about Panasonic DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera, (Black)-2.5'' LCD:

This is my first digital camera, and it is very easy to use to get great pics. I wanted the 10x optical zoom since I usually seem far away from what I want to take pictures of. I'm not a good photographer, but my pics come out pretty good anyway thanks to the stabilization (especially needed when highly zoomed)! It's also fast on startup which is also important when trying to catch the moment. The size is a little bigger due to the folded optics and bigger lens needed for 10x zoom, but you can still carry it in a pocket which is all I needed. Actually the slightly bigger size makes it easier to handle (you can zoom in/out and take good pics holding it only with the right hand). The picture quality is great, but it is only a 5mpix camera... so viewing the pics on my 55" TV does show a little of the resolution weakness I guess. Printed pics look great though. Indoor non-flash performance is just OK, but again gets the job done if you are just looking to catch the moment, not create a work of art. Indoor flash pics look good, but as I understand, compact camera flash is usually not the greatest and I'd say this probably fits in with the rest there. I've owned it for over a year and the battery still charges and lasts for a long time... several days worth of vacation photos per charge I'd say (I'm not about to spend time measuring!). It has many photo modes and settings and I've played with several. Menu selections all have mini-help screens so you can read what each selection does without getting out a book and that really helps for us occassional-only photographers. I'm as happy as I can be with my selection, perfect fit as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see them merge this 10x with their widescreen higher megpix camera so I can get a little better results viewing on the HDTV.
