Comments about Olympus Olympus SP-800 UZ Silver 14MP Digital Camera:

I take up to a hundred photos a day in the home inspection business. I love this camera....very user friendly.....Zoom gives great detail at areas of buildings 60-70 feet away......just wish the battery lasted longer. I get about 60 photos (no flash) and then have to switch out batteries

Comments about Olympus Olympus SP-800 UZ Silver 14MP Digital Camera:

Olympus 800uz can't be beat for the price! My favorite things about this camera are:

30x zoom - Its clear and surprisingly stable at maximum length.

Panorama - I think the Olympus version of panorama is better than Sony's. Takes great panaoramic shots and stitches them in camera.

Soft Background - Although the camera doesn't offer an aperture control mode, it does have a scene feature that allows for a soft background. It works great. The camera superimposes a silhoette over the subject and anything outside that will be softened.

Movies - Haven't taken a lot but they look good.

Light Weight - I will take this camera with me more often that I would Canon SX20 or Sony HX1 simply due to lighter weight and ease of carrying it.

Macro - 800uz has macro and super macro modes. They work extremely well. I'm not a big macro user but this mode works so well I find myself using it more and more.

Ease of Use - Some other reviews have criticized the menu. I think its very intuitive and easy to use, especially for a non-pro like myself.

FUN - This camera is just fun to use! Even a novice can pick it up and start shooting some cool pics.

Things that could be better:

Software - The IB software is cumbersome and difficult to use.

Movie Zoom - You need to shut off sound in order to zoom during movie taking.

Finally, a word about image quality - I think its fine for a P&S camera. It would be unfair to compare to DSLR. IQ is not outstanding but its perfectly acceptable for home and personal use (family, travel, etc.). Expect noise in low light. I have found some shots to be inconsistent in IQ with others for no apparent reason, but I'm still learning the nuances of the camera, so it could be me and not the 800uz.

Overall, I would recommend the Olympus 800uz. I was going to exchange it for Sony HX1 to use on my upcoming trip to Europe, but have decided to keep it. Its lighter, fun to use, less complicated, and feature packed. Also, with its lower cost (on sale its about half the HX1) I won't be overly concerned about damaging or losing it. Its great value for the price!
