Fast Startup and Split-Second Shutter Response:
With fast startup and split-second shutter response, the D60 eliminates the frustration of shutter delay, capturing moments that other cameras miss.

8 Digital-Vari Program Automatic Shooting Modes:
Eight Digital Vari-Program Modes include: Auto, Auto Flash-OFF, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up and Night Portrait; each of which adjusts automatically for optimal results for everyday shooting situations. Each mode considers lighting conditions and possibilities, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, hue, tone, sharpening and more to make creative photography as simple as rotating the mode dial.

Advanced HELP Menu System with Assist Images:
The D60's Assist Images help you select the appropriate settings for many camera features by showing an example image typical of that setting, as well as an advanced HELP Menu for the current item selected. The D60's Question Mark icon (?) indicates that help is available for the currently selected item; just press the HELP button beside the LCD monitor to see a context-sensitive HELP page.

Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II:
The D60's 3D Color Matrix Metering II evaluates each scene for brightness, color, contrast, size and position of shadows and highlights, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance, comparing that information against an onboard database of more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes. The result delivers instantly and precisely determined exposures for each scene, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Image Optimization Options:
The D60's Optimize Image setting lets photographers adjust color, contrast and sharpening, as well as other image settings, according to the type of scene or output desired. Settings include: Normal, Softer, Vivid, More Vivid, Portrait, Custom and Black and White, each of which are automatically adjusted based on sophisticated Nikon algorithms or user-selected settings for optimum results.

Built-in Speedlight with i-TTL Automatic Flash Control:
Nikon's innovative i-TTL flash control evaluates flash exposure with incredible precision to achieve better automatic flash balance and deliver outstanding results. The built-in Speedlight is always ready to bring beautiful exposures to darkened conditions, as well as add sparkle for fill flash in outdoor situations for enhanced twilight shots or an added impact to daylight images. In low-light or back-light situations, added illumination from the built-in Speedlight can make the difference between an average snapshot and a dazzling picture.

Fast, Accurate 3-Area Autofocus:
The D60's advanced 3-Area AF system and the refined algorithms inherited from more advanced Nikon digital SLR cameras deliver fast, efficient and precise Autofocus. AF refinements deliver greater precision with fast, more consistent subject acquisition and improved focus tracking for consistently sharper pictures.

In-Camera Image Editing and Enhanced Retouch Menu:
Highly versatile in-camera editing features through the Retouch Menu include Nikon D-Lighting, Red-Eye Correction, Image Trim, Image Overlay, Monochrome (Black and White, Sepia and Cyanotype) along with Skylight, Warm Tone and Color Balance filter effects. New effects and controls include Quick Retouch, NEF (RAW) Processing, Cross Star and Color Intensifier filters. This provides greater creative freedom without the need for a computer for those who prefer to send pictures directly to a printer.

Stop motion video:
Creates a stop-motion animation from a sequence of images for added creative fun to your pictures.

Up to 500 Images per Battery Charge:
The supplied EN-EL9 rechargeable battery will allow for shooting up to 500 images per charge based on CIPA battery testing standards.

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6G VR Lens
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6G VR Lens offers Nikon's proprietary Vibration Reduction (VR) technology to help consumers snap sharper photos than ever before, even while shooting handheld. Compact and lightweight, this affordable lens is an optimum lens to use with Nikon DX-format digital SLR cameras and is the ideal focal length as a first lens to faithfully capture life's day-to-day moments, or a welcome addition to a Nikon D-SLR photographer's already-established lens assortment.

From family gatherings to sunny vacation beaches, the NIKKOR 18-55mm VR lens produces stunning results with vivid color and incredible sharpness. The 3x optical zoom offers users of Nikon DX-format D-SLR cameras including the D40, D40x, D80 and new D300 with a versatile picture angle perspective ranging from wide angle for dramatic landscapes and interiors, to moderate telephoto that is ideal for flattering portraits.

Beyond the lens' incredible optical versatility is the amazing benefit of Nikon's VR technology, which enables photographers to take substantially sharper handheld pictures at slower shutter speeds than would otherwise be possible. This provides the distinct advantage of being able to shoot more effectively in a much broader variety of challenging conditions. Nikon's VR system affords users the ability to take pictures at shutter speeds up to three stops slower* than they ordinarily could shoot without the image-degrading blur caused by camera shake at slow shutter speeds.

Nikon 55-200 mm F/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Lens
The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED brings far-away subjects to the photographer without the burden of carrying a large telephoto lens. Zooming in on those elusive action shots at soccer or baseball games will fill the frame with images that would be otherwise impossible to capture. Its impressive zoom range of 55-200mm allows users the versatility to capture everything from razor-sharp candid portraits to sports, nature and even wildlife pictures. Despite its long zoom range, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55- 200mm f/4-5.6G ED is remarkably compact and lightweight, and proves to be a formidable companion to the instant responsiveness and the impressive speed of Nikon digital SLR cameras.

To ensure outstanding optical performance, this lens also features Nikon's exclusive Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass to minimize chromatic aberrations, and Silent Wave Motor technology (SWM) for fast, quiet auto- focusing. All of Nikon's DX Nikkor lenses are optimized for the DX format sensors found in all Nikon digital SLR cameras, making the lens smaller, lighter and with exceptional center-to-edge-to-corner image quality and performance.

  • Versatile and ultra-compact with a powerful focal length range of 55-200mm designed exclusively for Nikon DX format SLRs, this is an ideal 3.6X zoom lens for portraiture, sports or wildlife.
  • An excellent companion to the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED.
  • New compact rod-type Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation.
  • Nikon Super Integrated Coating minimizes ghosting and flare to provide even higher contrast and more vivid images, even in challenging light conditions.
  • Two ED glass elements achieve minimized chromatic aberration and superior optical performance.
  • Focus Mode switch enables quick-switching between A (Autofocus) and M (Manual Focus).
  • 9-blade rounded diaphragm for more natural out-of-focus highlights.

I use this everywhere (excluding my office :)), in-house photographing my 1 year old child and my family, out of home photographing the veggies I grow, while traveling, in parks getting hold of those wonderful flowers and what not nature has made. Indeed, after buying this camera I have become an adventure enthusiast as I am always thinking of going to excursions and national parks. It gives me a lot of fun to look at the world from the camera eye and Nikkon has helped me achieve this bliss. A little expensive, I had to wait for a long time to get hold of one, but then again when I bought this one it had better options in the market. However this little thing is too good to ignore. I simply love it.

Takes photos that are better than the average camera but compare to any professional photo.

This camera package was a great investment. It is my first digital camera, I knew I wanted an SLR and researched a lot, we have a Nikon film 35mm SLR and love the pictures we get from that, so Nikcon was a natural fit for me. I really appreciated the fact it came in a kit with two lenses, bag, and 2 dvds for instruction. Great idea. I got the upgraded Black/Gold edition, nice touch.

I just got my camera today (it was on backorder) & I'm loving it. B/c I just received it today I haven't really played w/it too much, but it's looking a lot like my reg Nikon SLR. I'm excited to take this on vacation this summer to get some good shots. I ordered the 2 lens package & plan on watching the DVD to learn more about it. I took some test shots of my dog (who has blue eyes, usual red eye shots) & there wasn't any red eye! Very exciting.

I would recommend this package to anybody that wants a really nice complete camera package.

I recently took the D60 with me on a trip to Maui and was able to take some amazing photos. It is extremely light weight, I had it around my neck while horseback riding, ziplining, and sight seeing. The LCD screen is a great size and very bright. I'm a beginner, and did not find the controls hard to use at all. Definitely recommend this one!!!

What a deal! I priced this camera out at many places and Ritz by far had the best price. My in laws purchased this same camera with one lens several months ago for approximately [$]. This is a great entry level DSLR and we are having a ton of fun learning how to take better pictures. Easy to use, intuitive, fits nicely in my hands. Picture quality looks very good to me, althoguh I still have a lot to learn about taking quality pictures with the DSLR. Two lenses, the DVD's and the bag make this a STEAL!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

I am new to the "real" camera world. Bought this camera to use in photographing our product for our website. I have always owned the Sony Digital cameras that are the digital point and shoot type. I know NOTHING about digital cameras or photography in general other than pointing it at the object and when the camera "beeps" click the shutter closed. This came recommended to me by the [...] people for my purpose and I have to admit, it has done a great job. It is difficult to flip through its menus if you don't have any previous photography experience, but you can eventually fumble your way through it all and get it set the way you want to take pics of kids, vacations, etc. I want to also point out that you don't have the option of using just the LCD screen and not the viewfinder for photographing. You have to use the viewfinder. The eye at the viewfinder will automatically shut off the LCD screen as well. But you can never see the image on the screen at all until you snap the shutter though. That is a bummer for a novice photographer. I have always gotten great pics with my Sony Cybershots, but they always seem to break after one or two years of continual use on beach vacations so I have stepped up. I think I would only use this one at home or on local trips (school plays, etc.) because it is so expensive and heavy/cumbersome with all of its parts. I got the extra lens for school plays (we always are in the back it seems) and I like it, but again, it is heavy, too. Was hoping to take it to Hawaii this summer for the volcanoes and waves, but the instructions say not to have it around beaches or high heat so I suppose that idea is nixed and I will have to purchase another Sony Cybershot to tote there. :( All in all, I would recommend this for a serious photographer (my brother looked it over and he loves it and he is a photographer) and I would also recommend it for a Novice like myself. It takes great photos and portraits.

I purchased this camera right before I took a trip to Africa. I had never used a digital camera before, but didn't want miss out on catching all my memories. This camera is so easy to use! Just putting it in automatic mode, I was able to capture shots that no one else on my trip was able to get. I was on safari on a turbulent truck and my pictures came out clear as day! The number of pixels for the price is amazing! The VR lenses are fantastic. Plus it can take a beating! I took pictures in rain, dust, night and they all turned out wonderful. At the end of the trip everyone wanted my pictures. I even entered them into a contest. I have no regrets about buying this camera. I plan on enjoying it for many years.

I have always been the family photographer and have always wanted a Digital SLR camera for a few years now. In September of 2007 my father went out and bought a Canon Digital Rebel Xti and I love it. Well I don't like the new replacement for the Xti at all. That is why I went out and started shopping Nikon and I saw the D60 and fell in love with it. The only thing I don't like about this package is that the bag from Nikon is way to small to carry the camera, both lenses, 3 filters, plus everything you might need

I got this camera for my wife for her birthday this year. We've been using point-and-shoots for the last 8 years or so, and got really tired of the slow auto-focus time, slow shutter speed, and lack of any manual controls. We have been thoroughly impressed so far. The image quality is amazing, and it's ability to snap photos of fast-moving kids running around makes this camera worth the money. Most of our action shots of the kids from past cameras always have at least a slight blur to it. These pictures are clear as day.

Only thing I would have liked to see on this camera is a choice to switch between the view finder and the LCD screen to view the shot before it is taken like on other cameras. The added zoom lense is outstanding and for the price (basically free)cannot be beat. With the throw in of the carry case, what else can you say!!!!!!!

[...](I hird a professional photographer to take family portraits this past summer),the cost was over $800.00.She used Nikon and said that was the only camera she would use because of the quality of pictures it took. I have to agree, though my photo's were expensive, they were beautiful. Then I thought, with the money I spent on photo's, I could have bought my own camera and taken my own Family pictures. That is when I came across this site and was so excited to learn that I could own a camera "Nikon D60" and have no payments for 90 days. I am now enjoying my New NIKON D60 camera, and though I have never had any experience with a camera like this, I am having no problems taking great pictures because my camera also came with 2 NIkon School DVD's , Understanding Photo and Fast, fun, easy digital lessons. Believe me, if I can understand this camera, and take wonderful photo's within a short time of receiving my camera YOU CAN TOO!!!I would HIGHLY recommend this camera to anyone and already have! I also recommended they purchase it through this site.Even though I do not have to pay for 3 months, I already started making payments online through my account. I'll have this paid off before my first payment is due...plus, I will already have my first photo album chucked full of professional looking photo's by guess who? ME and my NEW NIKON D60, this really is a great camera, and it has a great solid feel to it, I love it!!

I love this camera! I wanted a digital SLR for just taking nice photos of nature, landscapes, artsy sort of things. I was going on a trip to India and so I figured it would be a great time to buy one. I went to the store and they sugguested this one. It was prefect for what I wanted it for! It was very very easy to use. Perfect for someone who wants to take photo to the next level - not too intense but intense enough
I wanted to use the camera for just nice photos - its a great camera for an introduction to photopgraphy - it takes nice shots of landscapes, people, just everything -- like even if you dont plan on becoming a photographer or anything or even using it for artsy things - it is still a wonderful for pictures just to show your friends and family. the pictures are clear, focused and simply beautiful no matter the subjects.

The two lens makes this a nice package however only the 18-55 is VR, the 200mm is not so you may want to try to keep it on a pod for clear pictures at high zooms.

Basically there is not one single use that this camera would not be an asset to have for application. I have never seen such a versatile product for this money in my entire life. Usually Nikon is priced beyond what I consider to be reasonable although I do own other Nikon products. I have had to pay dearly for the products that I have previously purchased. They were worth it but believe me it was a pleasure to find this one for this price. I am actually considering purchasing another to put away for use at a later time. I did upgrade the Zoom lens for a VR (Vibration Reduction) version; but here again it was well worth the money. I know that I will never regret this purchase. Probably the best purchase I have made in a very long time if not the best ever in camera equipment.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

Great Kit! I wish both lens were VR, but still a great buy! Even so, I've gotten some good photos with the AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED lens without a tripod. The Nikon D60 is lightweight (with either lens) and is great for taking on walks and hikes. Everything fits well in the bag, and is easy to carry and use. The videos were great too! The entire family loves this kit, and we all got great photos right out of the box!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

I recently attended the CES show in Las Vegas. My colleagues own the D80 and D300. Initially I was a little envious however as time passed by, my colleagues kept complaining on how heavy the their cameras were. Mine was just fine.
Also, the end results of the pictures are very difficult to distinguish. Except for those pictures that were taken on a 50mm lens (f1.4), you really couldn't tell the difference.
So, with this said.
I think it is safe to say, save your money, buy a D60 and expand your lens collection!

A friend bought the D60 right before our vacation in August of 2008. I was impressed and had been looking for a SLR digital for some time. I did some research and felt this was the best camera for what I wanted....A quality camera for digital photos! I actually bought gift cards for another retailer but Ritz came up with a better offer!!! I have had it for almost a month now and really like it. It's easy to use and the photo quality is excellent!! The battery went a very long time before requiring a charge. Well worth the money!! My wife and I have bought 2 "cheap" $100-$200 digital camera's in the past and the D60 can't even be mentioned in the same sentence as them! The photo's are absolutely amazing.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

My husband bought me this camera for Christmas, and I was so excited to get the D60, My husband owns two Nikons the D80 and the D300, and I fell in love with the picture quality that the Nikon offers. But after I used the camera in low light with a ISO of 1600 I noticed a hot/burned pixel, so I check all of my other images and sure enough the pixel showed in low ISO of 400-800. I returned it a week ago and I'm still waiting for my replacement. Other than that I love the feel of this camera, nice sturdy, its a great deal. Picture quality is amazing, and has fast shutter speed. I owned a point and shoot camera, and I wanted a DSLR to control the settings myself. If you are barely starting out I recommend this camera, you can still set it to Auto and it would do everything for you, or you can choose to control the settings on your own.

Some of the negative things that I found wich may not bother someone else is, that the LCD screen does not have a protection screen, all of the DSLR's d80 and above have this plastic cap that goes in the back to protect it.

It takes about 3 or 4 seconds to see your picture on the screen after you take it, I don't know why may be my SD card, maybe I need a faster one.

Thats all I can think of thats negative, also when you get your camera check for burned/hot pixels, someone would not mind this but It's a brand new camera and you paid a lot for it, so I suggest you return it.

*the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the dead/hot pixel

This is a great camera for a first time DSLR user, like myself. I purchased it the day after Christmas to replace my Nikon Coolpix 4100. I have a 9 month old and I just couldn't capture enough of her cute looks with the Coolpix. The Coolpix was a good camera for my needs before she came along. I spent weeks looking through specifications and reviews on line and I also considered the Cannon XS. I used [...]D60 trial camera snapped a few pictures of my little girl in the store. IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST USE. I have snapped a couple of hundred shots already and this is just a great camera. It's been easy to use and the 2 lens have been terrific. I did upgrade to the 55-200 VR lens. (There was another family shopping in the store who also gave kudos to the D60, they had purchased it a couple of months ago, and stated it took great action sport photos at the Carrier Dome.) Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

First of all I would give it 5/5. Because this camera provides everything a beginner needs. Nothing is easy if you try, I'm a firm believer of word "Do It". So when it comes to Photography, this camera has everything from technology to the picture quality. I know it takes a while for mastering the art of photography and if anyone thinks they can shoot any picture with perfection, then this is the camera to go for.
This is an excellent entry level camera, and it creates better quality picture than D40 because of the number of pixels it has. Till date I was using Point to Shot camera, and for all those who have never used an SLR, it would definitely take a little time to get used of a SLR camera because you should know how to focus and object correctly before capturing it in the camera.
Mounting the lens is not a big deal. At the beginning you might find it irritating, but once you know how to fix it, then it is just a matter of secs.
There are people who complaint about image not shown in the LCD screen, I think in any DSLR LCD screen should only be used for camera settings and reviewing an image because for getting a crystal clear picture, you must use the view finder which allows you to control the image and enhance the quality by adjusting the lens.

With 2 lenses it gives you all the ability to take great quality pictures. I don't find any drawbacks with this camera.

This is an excellent camera for beginners. Go get one for you and you will never regret.

I was looking for the right camera to begin my next step in photography and after much research and comparison, I opted for the D60. I have been so pleased with the ease of operation and quality of the pictures provided by the 2 included lenses. I find myself looking for more photo oportunities as far as time and subjects more than ever before. I'm sure this will prove to be a fine camera for my purposes, and affordable, too!

One of the best things is, I can edit the pictures right on the camera. We have taken more pictures of our kids in the past week, then we have in months. It has been fantastic!!

I ordered this kit [...], and had ZERO problems with the order. It arrived on time, and as advertised. This is a great deal. The bag is a Nikon Bag, and all the accessories were included in the box. I purchased this kit with the standard DX 55-200 because I plan on ordering a 70-300 VR DX later, so I didnt need VR on the 200 lens...it was practically free anyway.I was very happy to see that the lenshood came with the 55-200 lens. While the DVD's arent necessary for those experienced with DSLR's, if you are a newbie with these types of camera...WATCH THEM!!! They are fantastic learning tools for the new photographer, and contain valuable information specific to the D60.The lenses even come with the paperwork to get the 1yr warrenty upgraded to a 5 year manufacturers warrenty, at NO cost. The gadget bag is nice. Big enough for a DLSR and about three lenses and assorted materials. It also comes with a seperate padded bag large enough for either the DSLR body, or a larger lens. The 55-200 comes with its own nikon soft bag.I also ordered mine with two of the 4gb SD cards, which work well in the D60.Great deal for a new in the box D60 and brand new nikkor lenses. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase [...]

It's a great camera. I like to use a lot of the features and there's the con. Looking for the ones that I use as a casual user can be difficult. It's going to take a long time to remember how to get to the features I like since this camera has LOTS of stuff to it. There's an occasional delay in picture taking which is a disappointment since speed is the #1 reason I wanted this camera. I'm not sure why it does that. Pictures are looking good.

I bought this camera so that I could take better pictures of my child as she grows. The lag time with my old camera was just too much for a 2 year old. By the time the camera actually took the picture, my daughter would be nowhere in it! This camera is amazing! The clarity of all of the pictures is wonderful. We haven't had a bad picture yet! We even took some in the car with the vibration reduction lens and it worked great. I can't say enough about this camera! I love it and will forever be a Nikon fan!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

Since I've now stepped up to a dSLR camera from a point & shoot camera, this was a very nice and easy step to make. To the outsider it looks expensive and gives you the "professional" look...even if you don't know exactly what you're doing just yet. The camera itself is light, but it still feels like you are holding a sturdy piece of equipment in your hands. (I personally couldn't say the same for the Canon XS or XSi that I also considered purchasing. They felt like a peice of cheap plastic when I picked them up and held them in my hands.)

{NOTE: I recommend to any and everyone considering buying a dSLR to go somewhere and hand hold the cameras you are considering purchasing. This will likely be the deciding factor on what you decide to buy. If it doesn't feel good in your hands, then you won't like to shoot with it after you buy it.}

Many of the pre-programmed modes are similar to the point & shoot models I've used in the past, so it will help make your transition into the dSLR world pretty seamless and still provide you with the ability to customize and fine tune your shooting style.

The two lens package is the way to go. Both lenses are light and fairly compact enough to pack away and still use when needed. I've mainly used the 18-55 lens for most of my Christmas holiday pictures with the family. But the 55-200 lens provides added flexibility if you need to get close from far away. The only thing missing is the VR on the 55-200. But so far, I've still been able to take some nice pictures with minimal camera shake.

The user interface is really easy to understand. The help menus for this camera are great and have helped me understand the capabilities that the camera has. This is a plus for the beginner that hasn't watched any video tutorials or read any books yet.

I'd recommend this camera to any one getting started in the dSLR world.

As a Yearbook Advisor I need to teach Students how to take great shots quickly - after all, a Yearbook is nothing without photos. My students start on the Nikon D40 but then get to use the D60 we recently purchased. They are getting great shots - indoor photography is better than with the D40. Students love it and the print quality of the photos is excellent. So far, 3 of my students have purchased this kit. No Regrets!! Great fun.

This is a great camera! I had my eye on it for awhile, I finally got it a couple days after Christmas 2008 and I've been fiddling around with it around my farm. It takes amazing shots and I couldn't be happier. There isn't one thing I don't love about this camera. My only hitch is that its going to take awhile for me to learn all the different settings - its very different from my little (substandard) point and shoot. Amazing camera that I will enjoy for years to come and using it on a trip to Australia that may possibly happen this summer!!!!

I haven't even read the instructions yet, and I'm taking great pictures.
What I like the most about this camera is there is little lag time between what you actually see through the view finder and the picture you get. I have been very frustrated with other digital cameras that claimed there was little time between clicking the button and the picture but ended up with a lot of shots of my granddaughter's ear or the back of her head. With this camera, I didn't miss one of the exciting Christmas moments!
I also love the feature that allows for continuous pictures by holding down the shutter button. I have great shots of her on her new trampoline!!!
The camera was passed around from person to person on Christmas Eve and no one had a problem getting a great picture.
One drawback - if you're used to looking through the screen to take pictures instead of a viewfinder, it takes a little getting used to, but I wouldn't trade this camera for anything.
I've had it less than a week and see great potential for wonderful pictures as I learn.

I love this camera. I just got it at Christmas and took great photos. My family had 16 people come in town and it was great. My camera performed perfectly. I received bright detailed pictures. The mode wheel is easy to use. I recommend instead of turning flash off in auto just switch to no-flash auto. I visited a creek after X-mas day and got great pics of a mini-waterfall. I recommend using low apture to get a ghostly effect on the water, and high apture to capture the tiny droplets. So the difference is detail but I loved the ghostly effect. Overall this is a great camera and is great for the money!!!

This is a great camera for a first time dslr user. It has everything you need to get started. Plus it's super easy to get information on any part of the camera itself. The only 2 things I don't like about this camera are that there is no autobracketing setting and the lenses this camera can use are limited.

I was using a Sony P&S and have also used a Canon Super Zoom P&S. I have been comparing cameras for the last year and have wanted a camera that gave me the most bang for my buck. The D60 package is the BEST of both worlds which provides no noise, fast shutter, great color, nice controls, two lenses, and a nice bag to store evrything in. This package is a dream for me because it gives me everything I need to start out. The only extra thing you need to purchase is a memory card which is relatively cheap and maybe a UV filter to protect your lense.

Anyway, my parents got me this package for Christmas and let me see it early because they wanted to make sure they got the right thing. When I saw what they had done I was so overcome that they would get me something so nice and was impressed at how complete the package was.

I took a few shots, never using a DSLR before, before it was to be put under the tree and they look like a professional took them.

Thanks to Mom & Dad and also to Ritz for putting together such an affordable package!

I used to use an old Nikon FM, and Minolta X-700, love them. I have been using a small digital Nikon for photos. I came into the market for a new DSLR for a side business I have. What a wonderful, easy to use camera. It is great equipment quality, and the photos are fantastic! This is straight in line with what I would expect from Nikon. My wife picked this camera up, and was taking great pictures in 2 minutes. I highly recommend this camera to anyone.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D60 DSLR Two-Lens Outfit (18-55 VR & AF-S DX 55-200mm F/4-5.6G ED):

Nikon D60

The Nikon D60 may not be a world apart from its predecessor, but it remains a good, solid, 10 Megapixel entry-level DSLR. It’s very easy to use, handles well and produces great looking – if slightly over-saturated – images in its fully automatic modes. As such it’s an ideal model for first-time DSLR buyers who are perhaps upgrading from a point and shoot. And of course there’s wealth of manual control for when they’re ready to get creative.

In terms of the new features, there’s nothing truly groundbreaking. It’s good to have anti-dust facilities, although in our tests – like other DSLRs – they were far from infallible. The Active D-Lighting can indeed retrieve detail in highlight and shadow areas, but often at the cost of noise in the latter – and like other tonal range adjustment systems, it’s doing little you can’t already do with careful exposure and tweaking in software later.

The stop motion mode can produce some fun results, but if you opt for the smoothest 15fps option, the 100 frame limit will only get you six seconds of footage – and without an Intervalometer you’ll need to fire the shutter by hand for every single one of these exposures. And remember you can feed a batch of manually fired images from any camera into cheap or even free software to produce a time-lapse movie on your computer.

The eye sensors to switch the screen off are a nice addition though, as is the rotating screen information when you shoot in the portrait orientation – inspired by Sony’s Alpha DSLRs and Konica Minolta’s before them.

By far the best new feature of the D60 though is the option to buy it with an affordable stabilised kit lens. The new Nikkor DX 18-55mm VR is a superb budget option, delivering great quality images that are sharp across the frame, along with quick and quiet focusing and optical stabilisation which allows you to handhold shots three times slower than normal. It’s one of the classiest kit lenses around and buyers of the D60 should definitely go for it over slightly cheaper bundles with the older non-VR model.

By sharing the same core specification as the earlier D40x though, the new D60 also inherits its problems. It uses a fairly basic 3-point AF system, has neither a depth-of-field preview, Live View facilities nor an optional battery grip (from Nikon anyway), and like the D40x and D40 models, it requires lenses with built-in focusing motors in order to autofocus. Nikkor lenses without AF-S in the title become manual focus only, which is annoying if you wanted to try, say, the 50mm f1.8 model.

Many of these key downsides are addressed by its rivals, so without further ado, how does the D60 compare?

Compared to Nikon D40

Our first comparison is against Nikon’s cheapest current DSLR, the D40. The entry-level D40 is on the surface virtually identical to the D60, with the major difference being resolution: 6 Megapixels versus 10.2. Dig a little deeper though and you’ll find the base sensitivity of the D40 is 200 rather than 100 ISO and crucially for fans of action photography, it inherits the D50’s unusually fast flash sync speed of 1/500. Compare this to the 1/200 flash sync speed of the D60 and most other non-pro DSLRs.

In the D60’s favour, it features anti-dust facilities, Active D-Lighting, eye-sensors to switch the screen off when you’re composing a shot, rotating screen information, stop motion recording, and most importantly of all, the option to buy it with a stabilised kit lens. For most people though the question will be whether you want 10.2 Megapixels and that stabilised kit lens. If so, go for the D60. If not, save yourself some money and go for the cheaper D40 – remember, you can always buy a better stabilised lens in the future. See our Nikon D40 review for more details.

Compared to Nikon D80

The D60 may share the same sensor and shutter mechanism as the D80, but Nikon’s higher-end model is a much more powerful camera in many respects. It features improved build quality, a far superior viewfinder experience with optional grid-lines and a depth-of-field preview, a sophisticated 11-point AF system with autofocus support for older lenses, accurate feedback from the battery, an upper screen for shooting information and direct control over popular settings like White Balance and ISO.

The D80 is therefore much better-suited to enthusiasts or anyone who wants to grow with their camera in the future. And the D60’s advantage of a stabilised kit lens is countered by typical D80 kits with longer zoom ranges. So unless you love the smaller and lighter body of the D60 with its slightly friendlier approach, the D80 is well worth paying the extra. See our Nikon D80 review for more details.

Compared to Canon EOS 400D / XTi

The earlier Nikon D40x was released to compete directly against Canon’s best-seller, and the new D60 continues that battle. Both cameras deliver roughly the same quality results, although the D60 has punchier output by default and its new kit lens is noticeably superior, not to mention boasting stabilisation. The D60 is also friendlier in operation, which will please first-time DSLR owners, although experienced photographers will prefer the Canon’s quicker access to settings like ISO and White Balance.

So far so close, but the Canon 400D / XTi boasts a much more sophisticated 9-point AF system and depth-of-field previews, along with greater compatibility with older or budget lenses; it also comes with RAW processing software. It all depends on your preferences, but the Canon is a technically more powerful camera and an average kit lens aside, is better-suited to enthusiasts. See our Canon EOS 400D / XTi review for more details.

Nikon D60 final verdict

The earlier Nikon D40x was an interesting proposition as it was essentially a D40 fitted with a 10 Megapixel sensor to better compete against Canon’s EOS 400D / XTi. Unfortunately, the D40x inherited several weaker aspects of the D40 which may have been acceptable at an entry-level price point, but which sat less comfortably when priced similarly to the Canon.

The new Nikon D60 finds itself in a similar position. Its relatively basic 3-point AF system and reliance on lenses with AF motors to autofocus remains a problem compared to the Canon. But Nikon has ticked two important boxes with the D60 by equipping it with anti-dust facilities and a new kit lens with stabilisation. Admittedly, the Canon also has anti-dust and neither system is infallible, but the option of an affordable kit lens with stabilisation is a crucial advantage. Canon may also now have a stabilised version of its EF-S 18-55mm, but it’s unlikely to make it into many 400D / XTi kits.

Ultimately there’s two kinds of people who’ll be considering the D60. First-time DSLR owners and enthusiasts on a budget. The former will love its ease of use, friendly menus, foolproof metering and vibrant images using the automatic settings. Enthusiasts will also benefit from these, but in the long term could become frustrated by the limitations of its 3-point AF system, indirect access to popular settings, reliance on lenses with AF motors, and the lack of depth-of-field previews and an official battery grip – not to mention the absence of RAW processing software in the box. Enthusiasts will arguably be better-served by more sophisticated DSLRs like the Canon 400D / XTi, or if they can stretch the budget, Nikon’s own D80.

So if you’re an enthusiast on a budget, think very carefully about the limitations of the D60 and whether they’ll frustrate or restrict you in the future. If you fear they will, then you’ll be better off considering a different camera.

If you’re buying your first DSLR though, the Nikon D60 is an excellent choice, although do carefully ask yourself if you really need its 10.2 Megapixels. Unless you regularly make huge prints or tight crops, you could be equally well-served by the cheaper D40
