The built-in Speedlight is always at the ready and brings beautiful exposures in darkened conditions, as well as adding sparkle for fill flash in outdoor situations for enhanced twilight shots or an added impact to daylight images. In low-light or back-light situations, added illumination from the built-in Speedlight can make the difference between an average snapshot and a dazzling picture.

8 Digital-Vari Program Automatic Shooting Modes - Eight Digital Vari-Program Modes include: Auto Flash-OFF, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up and Night Portrait; each of which adjusts automatically for optimal results for everyday shooting situations. Each mode considers lighting conditions and possibilities, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, hue, tone, sharpening and more to make creative photography as simple as rotating the mode dial.

In-Camera Image Editing - Highly versatile in-camera editing features through the Retouch Menu include Nikon D-Lighting, Red-Eye Correction, Image Trim, Image Overlay, Monochrome (Black and White, Sepia and Cyanotype) along with Skylight, Warm Tone and Color Balance filter effects. The result delivers instantly and precisely determined exposures for each scene, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Fast, Accurate 3-Area Autofocus - The D40x''s advanced 3-Area AF system and the refined algorithms inherited from more advanced Nikon digital SLR cameras deliver fast, efficient and precise Autofocus. AF refinements deliver greater precision with fast, more consistent subject acquisition and improved focus tracking for consistently sharper pictures.

I have owned a 35mm Nikon camera for over 20 years. I was leary about switching because of the featues and comfortabilty that I had. The D40x has removed any of those concerns. My next goal is to purchase a 400-600 lens for wildlife photography. - I'm confident it will provide the same qulaity as the 35.

I would buy this camera again.

I have a five year old and have had a couple of point and shoot camera's. None seemed to keep up with my son. I would always get blurred pics, especially inside while taking pictures. The Nikon D40x has been well worth the money spent to capture these precious moments without blur or lag to cause you to miss these moments. I like the way the Nikon feels in my hands compared to the Canon Rebel. I thought the Rebel felt light and a little delicate. This camera has so many features that I appreciate that only come on professional cameras. My favorite is the continuous shooting. The auto focus has three fields and is a little difficult to manipulate at times, however, it gets the focus points more often than not. [...] The kit is a must...you get two lenses, a bag and tickets that allow you to attend many photo classes to learn how to use your camera. The kit also comes with two DVD's to help you get aquainted with your new camera. I have found the manual most helpful. [...] Right out of the box, after I charged up the battery, the Nikon was very easy to use. I was curious if the battery would fail quickly but was very suprised that after 180 flash pictures the battery meter went down 1 bar out of 3.I thought the camera would be cumbersome because of it's size but was not bothered after a day at a local theme park. I was more excited becasue i had captured so many great pictures at 10mega pixels. The quality is great. I had one printed at 8x10 size and did not see any degradation in quality. I have the 2gb SD memory card and it will hold plenty enough pictures... I think around 250 at the highest resolution setting. This is the last camera I will buy. It meets all my needs for capturing the rest of my families life in pictures. And to think I can grow with this camera as well. I am going to get a fisheye or wide angle lens next. Good luck and hope this review helped.

This is our 1st real 35mm in over 20 years! Upon purchase of this camera we have had fantastic results. The speed of taking action shots is great. Our boys ride Motocross and I am able to shoot jumps and their riding with ease. The camera is very easy to use and focus. Changing the lenses is a breeze as well. I would definatley recommend this camera to anyone who wants ease and affordability.
