Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix S8100 Digital Camera (Black):
Why I would not recommend to a friend: I really like the camera. One thing i dont like about it is that, you always have to have flash on or when u take the picture it will blur out, bad focus w/o flash. Otherwise overall everything is good about it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Coolpix S8100 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased the S8100 to replace my aging Sony DSC-T30B subcompact travel camera that's got dust bunnies on its sensor, and I'm tired of fixing/cloning in post processing. My everyday gear is a terrific Nikon D90/lenses.
I want to like this camera. I really do. It's got a small form factor, a long-reach 10x optical zoom, terrific-quality photographs, minimal barrel distortion at wide-angle, and good HD video.
Unfortunately, for my use as a travel camera, it doesn't have a way to preset a high speed shutter, which I need for photography from a moving ship/boat/plane/vehicle. I can push the ISO (with associated extra noise) or use Burst Mode (with reduced file sizes because of buffer fill-up) or use Motion Detection (but that's disabled with any ISO other than "Auto"). Nikon tech support could not come up with an answer, and all it could offer is it will forward my request to the appropriate Nikon department for consideration in a future camera.
Unfortunately, this deficiency is a deal killer for me, and this otherwise terrific S8100 will be returned for a refund, and I'll have to continue my search for a worthy replacement travel camera.
Of course, as always, your mileage may vary.
