Automatic exposure with 8 Digital-Vari Program Modes - Eight Digital Vari-Program Modes include: Auto Flash-OFF, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up or Night Portrait, each of which adjusts automatically for optimal results under varied conditions.

Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II - The D40's 3D Color Matrix Metering II evaluates each scene for brightness, color, contrast, size and position of shadows and highlights, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance, comparing that information against an on board database of more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes

Went on vacation in the islands, never had so much fun taking pictures!! It's an AWESOME camera that makes you feel like a professional from the moment you use it!

I have kids that run around and won't stay still long enough to take a decent picture, well with the D40 this isn't a problem because the shutter speed is so fast, that it catches them in the pose I wanted them in.

I just absolutely LOVE this camera and it is a very good starter camera if photography is something you would like to get into!

After letting some of my friends try it that are photo enthousiasts like I am, they are completely sold on the idea of getting one of their own!! Get it, you will NOT be disappointed!

My favorite discovery was the continuous shutter -hold the button down and it keeps shooting! I had to have a separate heavy attachment on my old 35mm for this option!
The camera is lighter than it looks.
Has a great help button to remind you what the different features do.

Good starter DSLR, but has some flaws

Comfortable Controls, Easy To Use
Cons:
Inaccurate colors, Poor white balance
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:
Semi-pro Photographer

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

Not a bad camera, and it's no wonder that it is so popular. But the colors in auto mode are way too saturated and even when de-saturated in custom mode are not accurate. White balance, indoors and out, is atrocious. (A Lumix point-and-shoot results in far better color and white balance.) A good camera for what it is, but it's frustrating for me to use.

Nice indoor shot, but colors still a bit weird

I did alot of reserch between the entry lvl nikons and cannons. talked to alot of people and they all wish they started out with the D40, or save up money and get the D90. No need to waste more money in the in between models. The d40 is great and nikon really did change the industry with this lil gem. The kit lens is great to take up close, wide shots. The 55-200 VR is a great lens to take outside on trips. I didnt want to spend $$$ a 18-200mm when the 55-200 is really great. I rather spend that money and get a good micro lens.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

after owning the camera for over a year i may say that some of the people that write negative comments about the camera simply just dont know how to use it. some write about the picture bliking and not knowing why its just over exposed and its in the highlight mode, its quite simple i have no regrets. its a great buy. and like everything it takes practice to get used to.

I use this for sports and taking pictures of my grandchildren. This camera is so easy to use. I love it compared to my old "point and shoot." The quality of the finished product is unbeleivable..I have converted several of my friends to Nikon who have been die hard fans of the Canon and Sony. Seeing is believing..Give it a try and see what I mean..You'll love it.

I use this camera to take photos from portraits to outdoor landscapes. There really isn't anything I've not photographed with it. This camera performs so much better than a non-dslr camera. It was a toss-up about the cost of a dslr. I never really though I'd want to spend the money on one. But after using one of my friends Rebel xti the search for a dslr that was cost effective began. It ended with the purchase of the D40, and I've never been happier.

I bought one in 2008 for my daughter. She was so thrilled, and loved it so much, I bought another one recently for our daughter-in-law. The pictures are beautiful and so natural compared to "studio" photos. Both of them love how easy it is to use, and the quality and clarity of the photos.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

After reading some professional advise from Ken Rockwell website (very useful website), I understand why mega pixels are not important in the purchase of a digital camera if you don't require a printed out picture larger than 20" X 30" (We all rarely do). I went a head and purchased the D-40 with the 2 lenses kit [...] I took over a thousands pictures for this vacation and did not realize how nice the pictures came out until I loaded them into our computer after came back from the trip. Compare to many of my P&S digital cameras before (I replaced one every 6-12 months due to lost or broken), the pictures came from the D-40 camera are much better in colors and the details are exceptional. Now I can see more of the background details with vivid colors and believe it or not, I did not even have one bad picture taken during the trip compared to at least 10-20 bad pictures taken before from my PS cameras. Now I will save my money for the D90 for more serious occasion. The D-40 is a perfect camera for vacation and just go out to have fun. Highly recommended !

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I've been using this camera for about 2 weeks now and have taken many very nice photos. Fairly easy to use and learn. My only difficulty has been taking Basketball action photos indoors in the gym. The flash seems a little weak, and trying to use the sports mode resulted in blurring due to the low indoor light and the shutter slowing down excessively. My best luck has been with increasing the ISO sensitivity to 800 or 1600 and manually increasing shutter speed to 250 or more. The photos pick up a slight graininess, but the action is great. Camera response is very good and continuous mode gives me about 2.5 frames per second. Very good lightweight camera for the price.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

My old camera had gotten really slow and I was missing so many great moments with my kids. We purchased this camera because we knew it would capture all of the moments we had been missing with our kids - and it DOES!!! The flash recharges so quickly that I hardly miss a photo op! The downside is that my kids can't see my face while I use the viewfinder (this is my first SLR). We're having a period of adjustment as they get used to the camera. They are slowly getting past the need to inspect it and I am getting some GREAT picutures. One downside is I don't think it takes video (if it does, I haven't figured it out yet), which is a bummer, but worth sacrificing for the speed and quality. It's also rather bulky, but that comes with the territory with an SLR. Overall, as a mom of 2 quick kids, I am in love with my new camera!

I have owned three other digitals of equivalent class and fell in love with the Nikon D40! I am just now aquiring some experience in this area and became hesitant to spend any more money on cameras. It offers great value, very user friendly controls, excellent LCD size, steady focus and amazing photo quality! This camera is responsible for my renewed passion in photography. I am using it to produce my own greeting cards in conjuction with my writing skills. Thank you, NIKON!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I use this mostly for nature closeups and portraiture. It's not the best for large landscapes, but the images are still very good. The in-camera editing tools are very useful, and there are many options for photo quality so you can go from art photography to casual picture taking in no time. If you don't use flash in low light, it can be difficult to focus or the autofocus just won't let you focus at all. Overall though, well worth the money. I highly recommend it for photographers who want to take the first step to going pro, a decent DSLR camera is hard to find at a better price. I'm still in high school and I'm being hired for photography jobs with this camera. :)

I just got this camera a few weeks ago, so I'm still getting to know the features and how everything works. So far, it's great. I spent a lot of time comparing the Canon and Nikon entry level SLRs, and Nikon seemed to have just a bit of an edge. My favorite thing so far is how quickly the camera captures photos. Our 22 month old daughter moves quickly, and I'm finally capturing a lot of shots that I couldn't before.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I upgraded from a Fujifilm Finepix 10MP and I have no regrets. There was a bit of concern about the number of megapixels but not all megapixels are created equal! I am very happy with the quality of the shots and would not hesitate to recommend this camera.

The DVDs included were very helpful as this is my first SLR, and the price just couldn't be beat.

The negatives include the LCD issue as well as the camera strap (a bit too clumsy for my taste) and the camera bag (while free and much appreciated, is awkward to use).

You cannot go wrong with this camera and the freebies. Happy shooting!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

This camera was a great starter for me. But, I have since outgrown it and plan to invest in a d300 soon. Although, with my new SB-800 flash, I have seen a big difference in overall quality.

I wouldn't suggest this camera to anyone who plans on upgrading in the future because it has little flexibility and it would be better to just start out with the d-90... or d-80 if you want a little cheaper body.

Also, the camera is too small for me to handle comfortably. If anyone out there has big hands, consider a bigger camera for more stability.

One more thing, the kit lens is the slowest i've used, and the autofocus is like molasses.

I bought number 1 last year for my daughter; she has taken a little over 18,000 pictures - mostly kids in the last year. The pictures were so clear I bought one for myself, then her mother bought a third D40.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

This is my second digital SLR, first being a Canon Rebel that I traded in. The Nikon picture quality is MUCH better. The pictures just seem brighter and crisper. My canon pics were always dark and had to be lightened on the computer. It also seems of much better construction than my Canon. I could not be happier. I think it is well worth the money. I have small children and don't have time to wait for a picture to take on the regular digital cameras - so it is well worth the money to capture everything so quickly with a digital SLR.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

This is my first Digital SLR and it has been great. I have been out of the photography hobby for awhile and this kit has gotten me back into the swing of things. It is very easy to use and very easy to use manual modes. it takes excellent pictures. It is lightweight and fits the hand very well. It seems to be very rugged however I haven't dropped it yet. Don't plan on it either.

overall its a greatly priced DSLR that should last me a while. Only things that might change is the fact that I will eventually want an internal motor for AF lenses inside the body. My 50mm lense does not AF with the D40 because no internal motor.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I use this camera as a beginning SLR to learn digital photography. I take it on trips since it is not so expensive that if it is broken or stolen I will have huge heartburn about it. The same features that are the great things about it are strangely enough, the same that are a weakness. It is great out of the box in auto mode; however when you start getting into all the features it is a bit overwhelming. I suppose a D200 or D80 would be worse in terms of the number of features. If you are used to a point and shoot, non SLR digital camera, you will like this one but it will take a bit of time to learn to use all the different functions to their capabilities. If you don't want to take the time, then by all means this is a great camera out of the box used in auto mode. You will want to note that you can't use the LCD to frame the photos, they are taken using the viewfinder. All in all, I would recommend this to friends. You could spend more money getting more features most users will not use anyway or use that money to buy additional lenses and accessories

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

This camera takes really beautiful photos, but is just so large and cumbersome, it really has to be a special event for me to use it. It has a bit of a learning curve, so you definitely need to play around with it before taking it on that big trip. I can't figure out how to change the display so I can use the LCD to frame my shot instead of the viewfinder. Overall, it's not a very intuitive camera if you are used to the point and shoots.

My hubby got this for me a year ago for my birthday, knowing that I wanted to graduate from the regular digital cameras primarily because of lag time issues. I've since experienced the higher end DSLR's and I can tell you that for an entry level product, this D40 is pretty amazing (and still a favorite). The size and shape of the camera and its controls are easy enough to handle. You get photos with colors that are rich and the images super sharp. It's a great learning tool for those of us who want to go beyond photography as "just a hobby". I've bought other lenses and filters and have produced images even without these accessories that you'd think were shot with pro cameras.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

This was my first SLR, and it sold me forever on the Nikon brand. I am currently looking to upgrade to the D90 as I become a little more serious, but this is the perfect starter SLR. I've learned a lot about photography with this camera. Note that it does not have a focusing motor in the body, this means you will have to manually focus any lens other than the AF-S lenses.

Good Stuff: Easy menus, long battery life, quality built body, good kit lens, seems to snap off pictures at a pretty good rate (as fast as I can press the shutter), histogram overlay, just all around easy to use.

Bad Stuff: Sometimes is a bit frustrating to dig through menus just to change White Balance, Metering, or some other setting. Especially if you are in a situation where you need to change it rapidly. Other than that, there is nothing too bad about this great camera.

Buy it now!

I have four kids and I use this camera on a DAILY basis! It has great focus and I capture any photo I want. We all know how hard it is to caputure prints of children in motion, but the Nikkon D40 stops motion and gets just the right picture. I love the continual picture setting. It is almost like getting "still video". I also teach and take my camera to school and us the pictures to make slideshows for my students at the end of the year. It is hard to get good shots in the school light or gym with other camera, but not the Nikkon D40! My camera is literally my 5th child. I get many compliments on my photos and many, many questions on my camera! I never have a negative thing to say about my Nikkon D40! It is wonderful!

This is my first SLR (to own, not to use) and I have been completely satisfied (and the envy of my friends)!

I have been taking pictures for most of my 77 years, with everything from very expensive to throw away cameras. My Nikon D40 immediately produced the best pictues I have ever taken. They are clearly in focus, the color is superb in whatever light I worked, the camera seeming to adjust itself to the surroundings, and was simple to operate. Our 50th anniversary trip to Hawaii produced the best vacation pictures we have ever had and I did not even read the manual before jumping in. I just wish I had it for the many years before where the good picture was more the rarity, not the rule. What you see is truly what you get, sometimes even better than you see it!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

An excellent beginner DSLR. I bought this for my wife to begin amatuer photography and take photography classes, and she absolutely loves it. A fantastic way to move from point-and-shoot, and very reasonably priced.

The included 18-55mm lens works great for starting out, and in certain closer conditions, but the 50-200mm that was included in the "deal" we got really makes a difference. The greater zoom helps with catching harder-to-get shots, like a breach on a whale watch - and the camera's exposure (even the auto-settings that are intended for beginners) are speedy enough to catch such quick events.

We're very happy with this camera, and someday I would not be surprised to be upgrading to a D80 or higher.

The D40 DSLR is the easiest to use camera I ever owned. Great pictures every time, and the resolution is superb. If you are tired of playing with toys, and you are looking for a serious photographic instrument that will allow you to advance at a your own pace, a pace that won't overload you with choices and complications you don't understand, this is the right camera for you. Just as much a learning tool, this professional quality camera gives you the option of testing your skills without wasting valuable film and waiting days to see the results. I guess there may be other cameras that will equal the D40 someday, but today, as far as I am concerned, the D40 rules the roost.

While I wish I could have afforded the D60, this one worked just as well; easy to use; just need time to learn all that it can do which is a great deal.

Even for those late night with little light, still got great pictures!

The QuickStart information got me taking pictures instantly. It was of great help. I have used the old SLR cameras for over 30 years and this D-40 Nikon is the best there is. I have never been able to purchase a Nikon but the opportunity presented itself and I did. I should have purchased a Nikon years ago but could not afford them. I have added to my collection the AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens. And it also is a superb piece of equipment. I feel very proud when I am out and about using my D-40 Nikon. I would recommend this camera to anybody who just wanted to take pictures or go semi pro. I purchased the camera from Ritz Camera where I met the most knowledgeable people about cameras. They know their business. If you're in the market for one of the best cameras in the world, the Nikon, Ritz Camera is the place to purchase it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I use this for my "serious" efforts in photography - I also have a compact P&S for everyday. This camera is a delight; very easy to use, yet still has plenty of control for situations that demand such. I use it for travel, photo-documentation, record photos, nature photography, portraits, etc. One advantage not discussed much is its ISO speed - an extra stop on some of the competition. The "kit" zoom lens is also great - sharp, fast, with very little distortion or other artifacts.

I think it's a bargain.

This camera is wonderful! I had only limited experience with digital cameras but had learned that you can easily miss those cute grandchildren's smiles and expressions. Not with this camera! My first real test of the camera was at my 1-year old grandson's birthday party. I didn't miss a thing and all the photos came out great. Also used it at the beach and was able to catch the older grandchildren playing in the surf using the action shot feature. I took over 2000 photos during a 7 day stay at the beach (what can I say, I had all 8 grandchildren there with me). Great camera, you won't be disappointed!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I recently sold my point and shoot Canon SD1000 and decided to go SLR. Two things attracted me, one was the fact that I can continuously shoot without worrying about missing a shot, ie my son blowing out the candles on his cake, two was the fact that the camera auto blurs the background/foreground for you making your shot look very professional. I went ahead and purchased the wireless remote and that is one slick accessory. Its small and very ideal to use when taking self portraits of the family. I use this camera mainly for fun when going out with the kids and I probably have taken well over 5000 shots!I also want to mention that the battery life is pretty darn good! When out shooting after a full charge, I can snap away for 8 hours and the battery would still be full! If you are just making the switch and wanting to go SLR, I would definitely recommend the D40. [...]. Its like going from a PC to a Mac, you won't go back. The D40 IS pretty amazing.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

The one reason I ended up going with Canon after my purchase was because of the silliness by Nikon to force you to upgrade to a higher model (with on-camera focus motor) to allow autofocus on certain lens such as the 50mm f1.8. You could probably get away with purchasing competitor lenses from Tamron and Sigma, but ultimately I didn't agree with that strategy.

6 megapixels will allow very little leg room for mistakes of a beginner which will require cropping.

Great camera for the money. Purchased for spouse to replace a Kodak that had a time lag that drove us crazy. The Nikon D40 has a quick focus lock-in and virtually no shutter lag. Low light photos are exceptionally good as the ASA value is automatically adjusted to compensate for light challenging conditions. Color saturation is better than expected. Very happy with the choice. Easy enough to use as a simple point and shoot camera but has extensive control features for the photographer who wants to take their art to the next level.

Great cheap camera. Unless your are really a power use, I don't see why you would need to spend more to get any dSLR besides this. Nikon has a great range of lenses and the standard lens on this is excellent. Only issue I have is that I wish it had better two wheels like on the higher end Nikon dSLRs to control f/stop and shutter speed.

A great little Digital SLR! I would recommend this to anyone looking to get a little more control and quality than that of a typical point-and-shoot. This camera is also good for those that find SLRs to be frighteningly advanced. The only thing some long-time SLR users may not like is the lack of control outside of the menus. It does not have an AF motor, so make sure your existing Nikon lenses have built-in motors, or you are content with manual focus. Overall color, speed, and sharpness is excellent. I have done professional portraits with this camera (using a separate lens and flash of course) and they have come out beautifully.

I bought the D-40 after much research. I needed a more responsive camera since I was a new grandma and my husband and I were going on a trip to Italy. I took almost 700 pictures in Italy on one SD card and one battery charge! I could keep pace with the tour guides and take pictures with one hand while walking. Everyone tells me my pictures look like postcards. My granddaughter's pictures are wonderful. The D-40 has restored the fun and pride I used to have when I used an SLR.

I spent months researching digital SLRs. I finally got some sound advice from a professional photographer who helped me seal the decision. (The D40 is his casual out and about camera.)The D40 is all the camera I will ever need as a REALTOR and all around hobbyist photographer. I get great pictures of homes for advertising; plus I get quality pictures of my two favorite subjects, ages 7 and 4. (My favorite mode for them is "sport.") The D40 has the substance and construction I would expect from Nikon but is compact and lightweight compared to other digital SLRs. The price was right and I am extremely pleased with the product. I would recommend this camera to anybody in the market for a digital SLR.

After doing alot of research and talking to friends, I decided to take the plunge and invest in a nice degital camera. I settled on the D40 because of the price and quality.

I was taking amazing pictures right out of the box. I know almost nothing about photography but was able to put the camera together without much difficulty. I bought my camera at Wolf Camera and couldn't be more pleased. I got a fantastic deal, getting a zoom lens, bag, printer and tons of freebee's. The salesman couldn't have been nicer and answered all of my questions.

I've made several pictures of family, pets and nature shots. Because it's digital, you can take TON'S of pictures without worrying about wasting film. The only drawback I've encountered is trying to organize all those great pictures I've taken!

Seriously, this is one fantastic camera and I'm really looking forward to learning how to take even better pictures!

A great 1st dSLR for me. I was using an Olympus c3030 for the last 8 years. I thought the Olympus took great pictures until I tried the Nikon d40! The only things I have to complain about are minor. 1. Sometimes in Auto Mode the shutter won't release in low light because it doesn't focus correctly. 2. Sometimes I have to auto focus by pressing the shutter button down to get the correct focus point. Other than that I love all the other features.

-- No affordable AF-S DX 50 mm lens for this camera. I bought an AF 50 mm, which is nice, but I don't like having to manual focus for every shot
-- The display doesn't work for some shots. Portions of the image on the display blink. Not sure why.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

As a first time SLR user, this is a nice camera to start with. Takes great pics even if you only use it as an expensive point and shoot.

Only thing to keep in mind is the lack of auto-focus motor in the body. This can affect your lens purchases later on.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I got my D40 on Mothers Day, and have been thrilled with it. I use it for personal and work situations, as I work for a group of weekly newspapers. It is wonderful to have a camera with almost no shutter lag. My pocket digital was very frustrating in this regard. I don't know a lot about cameras, and this one was easy to use without having to learn much. My photos have never looked better. I do wish alternative lenses weren't so expensive for this camera.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I really like the D40. I'm new to DSLR, and this is plenty of camera for me. I took this kit on a trip to NY, along with a loaner lens (Nikon 24-120 VR) and the combination of this body with that lens was fantastic! I used the lighter, smaller 18-55 when size/weight was an issue, and it's a good lense for a starter lens as well.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I've had the camera for 7 months and perhaps I still have not used it to its full potential. Some pictures come out sharp and of great quality (outdoors) while the indoor shots leave much to be desired. The menu options take some coordination to get used to and the on-screen help menu is not that much help after all. After giving it much thought over the Canon Rebel XT, I chose this one.. I think I may have chosen unwisely.

Though, I would recommend getting another lens other than the kit lens. I have a 55-200mm lens that I use all the time, I never use the kit lens.

Bought the camera prior to taking the family on a cruise to the Bahamas. The pictures I took came out excellent and clear. My point-and-shoot camera couldn't have taken some of the pictures due to low lighting. I also played around with the speed setting and got an amazing shot of some waterfalls.

I would highly recommend this to anyone.

My wife bought me the D40 for my first Father's Day gift and it is by far the best camera I've ever used or owned. Friends have asked me which photographer we used to take the great photos of my son. This camera is much easier to use than the small point and shoot cameras. The two lenses are more than sufficient for 90% of the people taking pictures today. I would highly recommend the Nikon D40 to anyone who is thinking of buying an SLR at a very resonable price.

The DVD's that came with it are extremely helpful & I plan to watch them again to become more comfortable with using the endless features this camera has. I have the 18-55mm & the 55-200mm lenses & plan to get another one in the future to further the use of this camera.

I am loving this camera... my first SLR. I got so tired of the delay time and poor inside shots (allbeit good, clear outside shots of still images) with my "pocket camera", I wanted to throw it against a wall. I am just getting started with the D40, but am so very, very pleased with its performance, and a comparison of the same shot with a D80 vs. D40 yeilds the same crystal clarity for your normal size pictures. I cannot believe the deal gotten with Ritz Camera for this camera, extra telephoto lens and camera bag. Thanks a million!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

Wow! The D40 can give any SLR in the market today, a run for its money. I use it for casual photography on vacations, subjects being people, scenic locations, entertainment shows, etc.

Whats great - Colors are a big turn on and make for delightful photography. Since most of the deliberation is between the Nikon and the Canon, I think I should add that I find the color scheme on the Nikon far better and truer than on the Canon. Aperture and shutter speed settings are extremely easy to change, against the canon which requires some effort. Flash does not produce any red-eye and photos do not need any correction.

Whats not - Autofocus is quite slow and is a pain in the neck, especially if you are in your car, at say 30 mph and taking pictures through the windshield. Trust me when I say that you would be better off doing it manually because all you would really be doing on autofocus is focussing back and forth on the windshield and the subject, which would be long gone by that time.

We bought this for our daughter as a High School Graduation Gift. She is "Thrilled"! Since she is an art/photopraphy major, she will be using this in her college courses - art, photography, forensics. This is a fanastic value, great camera and we would HIGHLY recommend this to everyone looking for a good camera, w/ great features & photos. "She hasn't put the camera down since we gave it to her - that speaks for itself"!
Thanks for a great gift and a great deal. You helped make a young lady very, very happy!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I am a beginner to DSLR's, but not to photography in general. The D40 is the best DSLR available compared with its competition (price range-wise). I use my D40 to take abstract pictures, such as close ups of flowers, animals, etc. I also take picture of my car with it, and people online can't believe the quality of the pictures. Taking pictures of people is a blast too.

There are many presets to help one with taking pictures, such as a close up (macro), sports (for fast-paced objects), and a portrait (for taking pictures of people) setting among a few others. I mainly use "M" mode since I like to adjust everything (shutter-speed and aperture) myself. Either way, manual or auto-presets, the D40 is great.

The battery life on the battery that comes with the D40 is great too. I have lost track of the amount of pictures that I took before I had to recharge it.

The only "cons" that I can see (if one can even call it cons) are its size. However, all DSLR cameras could be called bulky compared to digital point-and-shoots now-a-days. Despite its "bulkiness," it is comfortable to hold and take pictures with.

If you are looking for a DSLR, and are a beginner (or even a professional), really consider the D40. You will not be disappointed.

I have been able to take great shots and share with friends straight out of the box and I am currently delving into the more advanced features. I would recommend this camera for anyone who wants to take great pictures with ease. [...]

I love my new D40, I have been looking for a DSLR for awhile and chose the D40. I love it, I still use my Canon AE-1 Program but when you think about the cost with shooting 35mm over the cost of shootin Data the camera will pay for itself in no time flat... Its taken some time to begin to learn the higher functions but if you want a camera that you can charge for 90 min and start shootin right away get this camera, and if you want a DSLR that gives you all the functions of the more expensive cameras this one is for you. I LOVE my D40. I Highly recommend this one.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

The Nikon D40 has by far met and exceeded my expectations of a digital SLR within an afordable price range. With loads of customizeable features, solid construction and ease of use, I have found myself enjoying taking pictures everywhere I go. Whether its in the plane, beach, sporting event, golf course, the D40 is always up for the challenge. With its 18-55mm lense, close to average shots are great, for more distant objects I recommend the nikon 70mm-200mm or more....Overall, I am extrememly pleased with the D40 and recommend to anyone and everyone ins earch for a great value......

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

My CanonXti was stolen on vacation last winter so my daughter let me borrow her Nikon D40. I thought the 4 megapixel difference might limit my shooting. No problem. From shooting roller-blading dancers on the oval in Central Park to evening streets in the city to casual family snapshots to misty mornings at the beach, to catching that one fleeting moment that won't come again, this is a wonderful little camera. It's so light that in the mountains I can shoot with one hand while hanging on with the other without a tremor. It's gone from tropical heat and moisture to New England five below with not even a hiccup. I've owned two Nikon film-based SLRs and this one lives up to their tradition of excellence. My only problem is that my daughter is becoming impatient to get her camera back. My next traveling companion will definitely be a Nikon D40

This camera was a great purchase for me. I upgraded to this camera because I heard rave reviews about it from others. Crisp clear pictures, short lag time, and has excellent potential for me to learn more about photography.

This is a great camera. I have used it mostly taking pictures of my son's track team. The resulting shots have been awesome! Clear, heat of the moment photos show the dedication and effort these athletes are exhibiting. At these events and others I am now asked by other parents to take pictures using my "really good camera" as their own camera just does not work as well. Whoo hoo!

This may not the be cheapest camera on the market but this camera is the best for family events, nature shots, night photography, etc. In fact, I haven't found any time when I haven't been able t use it. I am certainly not a pro but I get pro looking shots from it. I carry it with me where I go and it's always ready. I have had other digital cameras but this is the best all around. I am a scrapbooker so I want all my shots to count.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D40 DSLR w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens:

I bought this camera about a month ago after hitting the wall of what I could do with my fuji S5200. It's Awesome! I love that it's light weight and the controls seam to be right where my fingers are. I got the D40 after about 40 hours of reading reviews between this one, as well as the Nikon D60 and Canon XTi and XSi, and I'm glad I did. It does everything that I need it to do, and the money I saved by not going for a more expensive camera right out of the box has freed up some cash for more lenses, which I can use on other bodies as I out grow this one. The only complaint I have is that it won't Auto focus with lenses that don't have a motor built into them. I recently got the Nikon 50 mm f1.8 and it would have been nice to not have to focus manually every time I use it. But with a little practice I've gotten better at it.

I am pleased with my new D40. This is my first DSLR camera and I am impressed with the ease of use. I am still working on learning the some of the manual adjustments but the transition from my Sony DSC-H1 has been smooth. A few minutes looking at the controls and I was shooting with no problem. I am already saving for the VR 55-200 lense to get closer on the soccer feild.

This Camera Is really worth it. If you are looking for a inexpensive DSLR this is what its all about. Really user friendly, nice menus, Bright LCD, Lightweight, fast... I was going to get an ultrazoom (sony H50, canon s5 is, Panasonic fz18)
But I went to Ritz and compared results, this camera kicks. It is SOOO much faster and so much better quality. If you are decicing betwen this and canon's FORSURE get this Nikon it's a better camera. Dont be afraid to got to the store and try it out. You will see. also if you are looking for a free camera bag to go with it get the D40 with the additional lens package you will end up buying it anyways. The additional lens package also comes with 2 free dvds how to use the camera. lastly every camera you buy at ritz comes with free classes.

I replaced a pro-sumer Kodak P880 that took great pictures but did not have enough reach with the add on p20 flash, nor good auto focus in low light conditions taking my son's wrestling pictures.. I got lucky sometimes.
"Sometimes" isn't good enough, so I bought this D40 as it fixed what was wrong with my old camera. Fast, accurate focus and ISO-1600 speed, if necessary.
2-lenses and a necessary gadget bag was included, and I am glad I got that option...Great bag!

And as long as you have memory on your card you can takke pictures for hours. I look foward to working with other Nikon products but I am happy that I started with the D40.
