Built on a custom application of Nikon's innovative EXPEEDTM image processing system for enhanced noise reduction and improved the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and incorporating the precision optics of a NIKKOR lens, the COOLPIX S550 brings new ease and fun to capturing smiling faces and special moments.
A first for the COOLPIX camera line, the S550 will feature Smile mode, which automatically fires the shutter when the subject smiles as well as a Blink Warning, which displays a warning message when the subject has blinked. In addition to the aforementioned features, the COOLPIX S550 incorporates Electronic VR Image Stabilization technology, which is designed to help produce sharper and clearer images, especially in lower lighting conditions or when capturing moving subjects. It also offers high ISO capabilities (up to 2000), ideal for capturing images in low-light situations. For consumers that might be unsure about the correct ISO settings for their photos, the S550 is equipped with Automatic Sensitivity Control and High-Sensitivity Mode, which selects the optimal ISO setting for the environment and automatically adjusts to reduce blur.
For sharing and composing, the S550 has a bright 2.5-inch LCD monitor, with an anti-reflective coating and protective acrylic panel, easing the composition of photos and preventing scratches and scuffs. Ideal for sharing photos in a group setting, the COOLPIX S550’s LCD monitor features a 170-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle.
The S550 continues Nikon's tradition of including its unique image innovations in its COOLPIX cameras. The S550 features enhanced Face-priority AF*, which can now detect and focus on up to 12 faces in a single shot; In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, which can automatically detect and correct red eye in a photo; and D-Lighting, which compensates for excessive backlight or insufficient flash in images.
The COOLPIX S550 is compatible with SDHC cards and utilizes the ultra-compact EN-EL10 rechargeable Li-ion battery. The camera comes bundled with the new COOLPIX Software Suite for editing, organizing and sharing images.

This is a really great camera. It takes such awesome pictures, that are really clear and the zoom is unbelievable. At such a reasonable price you cannot go wrong. My pictures on this camera have come out a lot nice than my cousins $1500 Cannon. The Battery life is so good I haven't charged it in a couple weeks and its still got a full battery. I would def. recommend this camera to anyone.

I love all of the settings and how easy it is to use. I cannot stop taking pictures with it. Its so easy if you forget what a function does just check out the help section on the camra. Take time to play with it and figure it out.

This camera takes excellent photos, especially for something that fits in my pocket! Most of my photos have been taken in the sunlight, and for that it does an excellent job! During travel, I've taken some surprisingly good photos out the car windshield and window at 60mph. I rarely use the zoom, as the quality suffers. Overall, I've been very happy with this camera.

Like the compact and light weight. yet still packs a lot of options for shooting and setting up quality photos. The large LCD viewer helps to format pictures quikly and give good depiction of how camera setings will impact actual photo. I like it!

Photojournalism awareness comes thru practice. So practice!
Good people photos need telephoto lenses to capture closeup face details for emotion!
Good macrophotography reveals the geometry of common nature. So do it!
Far away details (such as cross canyon shots at Mesa Verde National Park to legally "get into" forbidden visitor places need a 175 mm lens. You got it!

I am not new to taking photographs but I am new to digital photography. This is my first digital camera. Trying to follow the menu and mode was not as easy as I thought it should be. I bought this camera online but should have purchased it in the store so that an experienced sales person could show me how to manipulate the menu and mode properly. That is how I would recommend a friend to purchase this camera.

i bought it to use at the christmas parties and it serves its purpose. Super lightweight. I used to have a sony cybershot and it was much heavier. It also doesn't give the picture a yellow tint. Easy to use. good for people people who like simple cameras. video recording picks up sound pretty well too.

10 Mega-pixels don't matter if the lens isn't good enough. I was told "it's a Nikon lense, it's a good lense." Sadly I discovered that the picture quality was no different than our old 4mp Canon with an older lense.
I also felt the flash is to small and doesn't give off enough light for anything further than a foot away.

This tiny camera takes great pictures that enlarge very well, without becoming grainy. The small size makes it east to carry anywhere
The one minor thing I don't care for is the small size of the control buttons, which are hard to use, with these old arthritic fingers

I learned not to choose a camera online. I made the poor sssumption that the camera would be as usable and commfortable as the CoolPix4 ...wrong. Too many buttons to push to get where you want to be as opposed to fewer with the Coolpix4.

I bought this camera for a 7 day cruise that I took. This camera never failed me. Never ran out of battery power, only had to charge 1 time during the 10 days I was gone. Took amazing pictures, sunsets, sunrises, people the ocean, zooming into objects all came out wonderful. Could be a bit better under low light circumstances but I can't complain about this product and told everyone on my trip about it.

I have taken this camera hiking, biking, and mountain climbing. It takes great photos both indoors and especially out. I especially love the vibrant color mode as it really enhances existing color without looking fake. The photos that I've printed have great color and are exceptionally clear. I'm going to buy another one for my husband for Christmas.

The Nikon camera is the best camera that I have ever owned. Many, many pixels on a photograph. The memory card adds a lot more pictures to the camera. You would not make an mistake in buying a 10 mega pixel camera from Nikon. Also has a large view finder on the back so you can take the picture that you would want !!!

Please note that in the "cons area" I marked these because I had mixed results in photos. The picture quality is good and can be great, but in some cases it could be much better. My old (Nikon p4, 8 mega-pixel) was equal or better in color and resolution. The camera's lag is not good in this new camera, this should be a must for any new camera in this day! In some light situations the focus is fair to bad, but other brighter situations it is sharp. It is hard to control in low light. If you are in normal sun it is good, but in shadows or some darkness it can sometimes be blurry. This may be due to it's image stabilization is not "optical stabilization". The "electronic VR" doesn't work as well as I would like. I would recommend a Nikon point and shoot camera that has Optical VR Image Stabilization, such as there Coolpix S600 or other. In some cases the S550 camera has too much grain in some of the photos. In normal light with some medium shadow it's OK, but there can be mixed results in medium to low light (even though it has ISO-2000). There is a bit too much grain in the dark areas in some photos, but I have had good dynamic range when outdoors in the partial sun to sunny with some shadow. I do love the overall look and its small metal body looks and feels cool. It's LCD screen is very good. Battery life is acceptable. Face detection could respond better on portrait or auto. The camera is simple to use and the functions are easy to navigate. This camera may be the perfect camera for first time or intermediate users. My wife is a novice and didn't really prefer it over our old Nikon point and shoot. I have included some photos to show that this camera can produce very good images even though I have had some mixed results.

I have a two Nikons and love them both! They are both easy to use and take quality photos!
