Similar to the D3, the D300 features Nikon's exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System that is central to driving the speed and processing power needed for many of the camera's new features. The D300 features a new 51-point auto focus system with Nikon's 3D Focus Tracking feature and two new LiveView shooting modes that allow users to frame a photograph using the camera's high-resolution LCD monitor. The D300 shares a similar Scene Recognition System as found in the D3 that promises to greatly enhance the accuracy of auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance by recognizing the subject or scene being photographed and applying this information to the calculations for the three functions.
The D300 reacts with lightning speed, powering-up in a mere 0.13 seconds and shooting with an imperceptible 45 millisecond shutter release lag time. The D300 is capable of shooting at a rapid six frames per second and can go as fast as eight frames per second when using the optional MB-D10 Multi-Power Battery Pack. In continuous bursts, the D300 can shoot up to 100 shots* at full 12.3 megapixel resolution.
Nikon's D200 digital SLR camera was a runaway success for because it embodies everything that performance-conscious photographers demanded. With the D300, Nikon has raised the bar with remarkable new features, greater resolution and speed, and even higher image quality. The D300 delivers an unmatched combination of quality, performance and value that's hard for discerning photographers to resist.?
The D300 incorporates a range of innovative technologies and features that will significantly improve the accuracy, control and performance photographers can get from their equipment. Its new Scene Recognition System advances the use of Nikon's acclaimed 1,005-segment sensor to recognize colors and light patterns that help the camera determine the subject and the type of scene being photographed, before a picture is taken. This information is used to improve the accuracy of auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance functions in the D300. For example, the camera can track moving subjects better and by identifying them, it can also automatically select focus points faster and with greater accuracy. It can also analyze highlights and more accurately determine exposure, as well as infer light sources to deliver more accurate white balance detection.
The D300 incorporates Nikon's new Multi-CAM 3500DX auto focus module that features an intelligent array of 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors. These sensors can either be used individually or in groups, with the option for Single area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of either nine, 21 or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses color and light information to accurately track the subject. Nikon's new Scene Recognition System and improved focus algorithms also contribute to the impressive performance of the new 51-point AF system.
Nikon's new Picture Control System makes it easy for users of all experience levels to select and apply adjustments to how their pictures are rendered and create optimized settings to suit their individual preferences. The same settings produce consistent picture tone, even when using different camera bodies. The Picture Control System offers four basic setting options - Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome. These can be directly modified for easy adjustment and customization of image parameters, such as sharpening, tone compensation, brightness and saturation. Photographers can customize and store up to nine customized options in the D300 and export up to 99 to a CF memory card, enabling photographers to share settings among multiple cameras that feature Picture Control System.
Taking a cue from the popularity of Nikon's D-Lighting technology, the D300 features a new Active D-Lighting mode that, when enabled, provides remarkable real-time highlight and shadow correction with optimized image contrast. Active D-Lighting produces broader tone reproduction in both shadows and highlights by controlling highlights and exposure compensation while applying localized tone control technology to achieve a more pleasing level of contrast across the entire image. And because the advantages of Active D-Lighting are applied as images are captured, image editing time can be shortened.
The D300's LiveView feature offers two modes for confirming subjects and composition on the new 920,000-dot, high-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor while shooting. The Tripod mode is designed for precise focus and accuracy when the camera is on a stable platform and the subject is not moving. In this mode, the camera focuses on the subject using focal-plane contrast and any point on the LCD screen can be selected as the focus point for the picture. The second mode, called Handheld mode, allows photographers to use the camera's conventional TTL focusing system, with all 51-points and 15 cross-type points available. When using this mode, the camera activates focusing immediately when the shutter button is pressed, to ensure accurate focus.
The D300 also employs a new self-cleaning sensor unit. Four different resonance frequencies vibrate the optical low pass filter in front of the image sensor to shake particles free and reduce the appearance of dust.
Refined Ergonomics and Usability
The D300 inherits one of Nikon's most streamlined, functional and aesthetically pleasing layouts in a digital SLR camera, designed to enable photographers to take pictures with less fatigue, greater accuracy and comfort.
The camera's viewfinder provides virtually 100 percent coverage so pictures can be framed accurately, while an ultra-high definition 920,000 dot VGA LCD screen on the rear of the camera displays images with vivid color and clarity. Its 170-degree wide viewing angle makes it easy to compose shots using the LCD screen in LiveView mode.
The D300 features rugged magnesium alloy construction and the camera's shutter mechanism is tested up to 150,000 cycles. The 3.0-inch LCD is strengthened with tempered glass and the D300's rubber gaskets and seals protect vulnerable entry points from dust and moisture.

I've used this camera to shoot a lot of stock and personal photos. I've used it both indoors and out, with and without flash. Coupled with the VR Lenes, it a great canera. I still use my D50, but not as much as I do my D300.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Over the past three years I have slowly been introduced into the world of Photography. I began with point and shoots, but worked with the Nikon D40 and D70 at school and I honestly fell in love with the brand. I love how manual Nikon's are, they really do allow you to manipulate a photo just the way you desire and though I've only have it for half a month I can truly say though it is a bit tough, it's worth it and I am definitely willing to learn how to work all of it's amazing features. It might be complex, but it can be easy as well so long as you have the drive and desire to learn how to use it to its potential.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Had the D70s before and this is a step up in every way. This is a camera that allows you to grow as a photographer. I don't think that I will progress beyond the capabilities of the D300. It is well laid out, the balance is good and if you add the battery pack, takes shots as fast as the D700. I am thrilled with the Nikon D300.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The first D300 I had failed completely within 72 hours - on the first day of a three day event that I was contracted to shoot. Nikon rep felt it was an AF motor failure.
The replacement camera did lock up at times, but I was able reset it, unlike the original D300. After the firmware update, most of the problems are gone. It does, however, occasionally lock up and when that happens, it shows an f-stop of 95! Nikon has been unable to diagnose it, thus far.
Now, I use the camera most often in continuous focus, single shot.

I went from a D50 up to the D300. This camera peforms outstanding in every aspect. Nikon engineers hit it well with this camera.

Graduated from a d40x. Wow! Great for taking quick shots at indoor sporting events. It is a little intimidating for a "photo enthusiast" and definitely overkill for the point and shoot crowd. If you have outgrown your point and shoot and are looking to get a little more serious about photography, then this camera is for you! One more thing, don't skimp on the lens. Research and determine what you need, and then buy good glass.

With the right lens and settings, this camera gives incredible images for anybody willing to learn how to do serious work with a camera. I started with a medium format camera and darkroom equipment in the early 1960s, so I am hardly new to photography. This is my favorite camera to date! The only thing is that at my age, I prefer knobs to set the exposure and aperture, and manual focus since my vision is still very crisp. I don't enjoy having to use reading glasses to walk through menus during a shoot. Yet, the images I get with this camera make it all worthwhile! When I say that a camera is my favorite to date, that's saying a lot! [...]

I traded up to the D300 from a D200. I didn't expect for all the extras this camera offers.
The price is high but I think it's worth it. Up to a 12 plus mp. Plus been able to crop, adjust, and save to a new photo is great. It's an excellent camera that I will carry for the next two years. Then I will upgrade to the D700.

Love the images from this camera, took it to Panama and it was a perfect size and weight for travel.
Switched from a D2x that my company supplied to the D300 and am getting just as nice, if not better images.
The only con is the camera isn't as fast as the D2x in crop mode for sports, but I did shoot a highschool football game and was impressed with the images.
The camera is great in low light, very low High ISO noise.

I take pictures of whatever catches my eye. This can be anything from a local football game to the mountains of New York. The D300 does it all.
I up graded from a D70, which in itself was a very good camera, but the D300 is on a shelf of its own. Everything is so much faster. Pictures seem to snap into focus. And I have yet to find something that will give the camera problems focusing. Price was a little more than what I wanted to give, but considering what you get, it's well worth it. I would buy it again.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The D300 has the same intuitive controls that go from the Coolpix series all the way to the professional cameras. If you're familiar with the controls there is no lag time in learning how to use 80% of all the functions, and the last 20% takes a few hours to learn. If you've never picked up a Nikon before within a couple of days you should have no problem in learning all there is to learn.
The great thing about this camera is the ability to customize your own menu with options from the other various ones. I have High NR, Multi-exposure, and a few others on mine that I use often and within 5 seconds I can completely change how I want to take the picture.
The white balance, ISO, and Quality buttons on the right are right where they should be and makes fine-tuning a simple operation.
By far the best camera I have ever picked up.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from a D100 that is still working great after many years and everything is better. Probably the biggest improvement is low light performance, followed by speed (pretty much instant if focus is close). The only drawbacks are weight and sound of the picture being taken.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I am a part time Photojournalist for Motorsportsforum.com and I cover NASCAR and Dirt Track Racing on the East Coast. I readily admit that I had to purchase some books on the camera, but that was of my choice as they offered shortcuts to learning the ins and outs of the camera faster. The photos are top shelf and my editors agree. I am not a graduate from a photography school and have learned my part time profession by hit and miss. In reality I work in the Judicial world and deal with realities of life all day long. The D300 works and that is the bottom line. It's the best second camera to have. Strong, durable, and top quality photos. The best first camera.... well lets say that D700 is hard to resist, but for the budget minded photographer looking to get the best photos, the D300 is the one you want.

Fantastic camera. I have a D40x which is compact, takes great shots but very menu dependent. The D300 is incredibly easy to set-up, customize or change settings without having to use menu and sub-menu. I thought I would miss not having full frame sensor but unless your a pro, you will not need it. Expensive toy if you do not use most of its capabilities. Buy the D40x if your just a point and shooter.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I do a lot of scenics and find the live screen to be very useful. I was a little disappointed that the infrared transmitter from my D 80 does not work with this camera and even more so that I needed to spend an additional [$]for one that does, but this camera is amazing. The vivid color setting is great. The white balance is extremely easy to adjust. My D 80 is a good camera; this one is fantastic.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I'm editor of a rural weekly paper and do everything from editorials to sports coverage to obituaries. This camera is a huge step up for me, even though we had been using Nikons in the past. It focuses fast which has enhanced my sports photos and made me less noticeable at meetings because of its quieter shutter. The only drawback is that my D70 had a higher flash sync speed. However, it appears that I can shoot the D300 at a much higher ISO without the grain being noticeable, so am hoping the flash can go in the bag (although the schools we cover don't have great lighting in gyms on at football fields).

I just graduated as a photojournalism student, and this camera has great features that are simple to manage and use. The quality of the images are superb. I like how there is a lot of different options for control in the manual settings, but how I can also hand the camera over to a family member or friend (who isn't a photographer) in the automatic settings and they can comfortably make good photos as well.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
About as good at 2,000 ISO as my D2x was at 400.
Very nice handling.
If you do landscapes, sports or photojournalism you will do better with the D3: faster frame rate, bigger pixels, better high ISO performance.
Small and light.
Big LCD is terrific.
This camera, along with the D3 and D700, puts Nikon at a whole new level
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have been in photography since 1973. This is the best camera I have ever had, including several Nikons. Easiest metering system, and most accurate. Menus are very user friendly. U use this for urban photography and for travel photography. Better than D200.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is a phenomenal camera to buy and own. It is very easy to get started, has an excellent manual that describes functions very aptly. HDR photography becomes a snap with this camera and is a must try for anyone.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
faster focus, great editing in camera, bright LCD screen, faster Iso. And adequate white balance when set.
My only negative commnet is that I upgraded from a D200 and they came out with a D700 right after I bought the D300. Trying to keep up with the game has to come to an end for me.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I like the ease of use with this camera.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Traded up from the D100 - what a big difference!
Features only found on cameras 3x time the cost previously. Pre-programmed Shooting Menu Bank and Custom Setting Banks are great. Dynamic AF Area and Focus tracking are perfect for sports. Shooting Raw and jpeg simultaneously is great for portraits and landscapes, but expect to buy 8GB & 16GB cards. As good as you may be, investing in a book like David's Busch's Nikon D300 Digital SLR Photography may be a good idea.(but don't let it stop you from getting it)
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Incredibly easy camera to use daily. The meter never fails me, and is as accurate as any I have used. The menus are very intuitive. I carry this camera daily, and use it to take pictures in an urban area. I have the 18-200 and the 105 micro, and both work incredibly with this beautiful camera.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I use it for nature and wildlife photography. It seems to be faster and sharper than my previous camera, the Nikon D80. I think it is easier to use than the D80 was because the controls for ISO and White balance and image quality are right on the top of the camera and can be changed instantly, and you can switch from P to A to S to M with a mode button also on top of the camera. It makes changing settings much faster, without having to go into the menu and fiddle around.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The D-300 is absolutly impressive loaded with features and is very good at analyzing the scene and shooting it right. It is however a complicated piece of equipment and requires some knowledge or study of the book to get the truly spectacular potential out of this camera. I have a D-40 which is highly rated and I would agree the d-40 gets the job done mostly and is light and easy to bring alond. The D-300 with the right settings however produces superior quality shots and has so many more options than any other camera I have ever owned. Is it worth the $$. Only if you really need it and will use all the features. Otherwise get something less expensive like a D-80. I don't think anyone but a professional will miss anything.

I originally bought the D80 which is also a great camera but decided to step it up a notch since I wanted more and the D300 delivers all that and more!
The D300 has an excellent LCD (coloration) for viewing, excellent high ISO and I have to say I love the Live view mode.
Photos are awesome coupled with some really nice lenses that I own. If you are a serious armature - look no future. The price is just right. If a PC gamer is willing to spend 3k on a PC, wouldn't you want the best for your hobby too?

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I've been using this camera for about six months now & I just love it! I went up from the D40 to the D300 & I do not regret it one bit. The 51 focal points are fantastic! No longer do I have to focus on a tripod then frame up the picture. I just frame the picture and use the cursor to pick my focal point! There is relatively no noise at ISO 800 or better. There's even a noise reduction function in the menu for 4 second or longer exposures to cut down the noise even more! What I really like is that all the controls you need for an exposure is on the camera body. I don't have to navigate my way through menu's. The only thing is that this camera is not for beginners. If your use to shooting with point & shoot camera's and you don't understand shutter speed, aperture, or ISO then forget this camera. However, if your looking for an upgrade then I would absolutely recommend this camera above all. The only problem had was with the first camera I got there was some damage to the sensor. It would always have a little red dot on a picture, but Ritz replaced it with no problems whatsoever & I haven't had any problems with my second camera.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have had the D200 for two years and this camera produces a superior image. It has a better system for auto focus and the live view comes in handy when using a tripod. As with the D200 I can use my AI prime lenses as well as the new AF lenses.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Pros:
Controls are very similar to D200 so moving up is very easy. I already knew how to use most of the camera functions.
Controls are well positioned and ergonomic. Intuitive placement of functions aids rapid changes of camera settings.
Battery life is MUCH better than the D200. I have not had to switch batteries after shooting all day with the D300.
Very good results are achieved with ISO settings of 800 to 1600.
Customization settings require reading (and understanding) the manual. This is the most difficult part of the camera's operation.
This level of camera brings the ability to "fiddle" with the bits of photography far more than the average person will ever use.
Cons:
ISO settings down to 100 would be good.
Transfer times to a PC are considerably slower than the D200.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I am so glad that I waited for the D300 to become available. After trying to decide if I wanted to go with the D200, it was well worth the wait. I had formerly used the Nikon D50 and was thrilled with it for as long as I used it. I knew that Nikon was my first choice, but I also evaluated the Canon 40D as a possible upgrade path. I didn't have a large selection of lenses, so that was not an issue in deciding on Nikon again. The D300 is just a better camera. Sure you'll pay a little more for it than the Canon 40D, but camera performance and quality shots from the D300 were far superior in my tests. Highly recommended.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
It looks good, it feels good, it sounds good. There is nothing wrong with this camera. The one big down side is that the RAW file is not compatible with a lot of old software. Nikon has not made a viewer file for Vista yet so you can not look at thumbnails for the RAW format using My Computer. I have to use the software that came with the camera to print the photos from the RAW version.

All I can say is BAD TO THE BONE. I was at a beach wedding when I first got the camera and was shooting some of the flower arrangements. After the wedding was over the wedding photographer came up to me at the bar and was floored after messing with it for a few mins.
The controls seem a bit daunting at first but after a few mins with the manual and an hour or so shooting in the yard its almost second nature. I was amazed at the shots I got just messing around in the yard.
This joker really turns some heads.

I must have photos of special events. At my home, my animals, a baseball game or a fund-raiser. It's extremely easy!! Couldn't get a finer quality picture -- and the ease of this awesome equipment....fantastic.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I got the D300 to replace a D70s. I considered the D200 but it didn't seem quite right. But, the D300 hits all the marks. For my uses, it's as good as the D3 but weighs less with better balance. Nikon recently shipped the D700 with an FX sensor. Nice camera, but, for me, the D300 is better.
About the only annoying feature, a delay when shooting in 14-bit raw, was recently fixed in a firmware update. I was shooting in 12-bit raw most of the time, but I may switch to 14-bit all the time now, and the quality is just great. There's a lot to learn, though -- I lost a few good shots in the first couple of days out because I changed a setting for a shot, then forgot to reset it.
The Pros and Cons above are sort of silly -- the fact is, it's a very serious camera. If you're not looking for that and ready to learn what it takes, this isn't the camera for you. And if you're not planning to shoot in raw all the time, this probably isn't the camera for you.
Advice: Get at least an Extreme III card and you'll want a big one. I have a 16GB main card and a 4GB backup. I've filled them both. And get a big hard disk too.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Previously owned Nikon F, F3, D40 and D200. Functionality is all there for many years of quality imaging. Build is very solid and weather-resitant. I shoot in the Olympic peninsula and have had no problems with moisture or fogging. I love the ergonomic feel in hand with any lens combination. I would buy again, but will likely go to a full frame next purchase.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
THE CAMERA MAKES THE PHOTOGRAPHER. THE FUNCTIONS ARE EASY TO CONTROL AND WHEN IT IS ON SELF PILOT THE RESULTS ARE OUTSTANDING. THIS IS THE JEWEL OF THE NIKON LINEUP. SETTING ARE USUALLY RIGHT ON WITH NOT MUCH INPUT FROM THE USER. CREATIVENESS IS WIDE OPEN AND FULL OF SUPRISES. MY LAST CAMERA.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The nikon D300 is in a class by its self The price is great and you get as much as the D3 and more with the self cleaning sensor. not a full frame, but is fast and the battery lasts forever on one charge.. plus it has a built in flash for quick fill flash as needed. Get the mb10d and shoot 8 frames a sec. And still half the price of the new D700....
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I use this camera for a wide range of activities and it excels at all of them. It is my primary back packing camera, it travels well and almost seems like overkill for everyday snaps (But, of course, it does an outstanding job there, as well). The 18-55 lens is thumb-tack sharp and with VR is surprisingly useful; I rarely change it our unless it is for a wide angle.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I got this camera largely because it works with all my old Nikon lenses. Even with non-CPU lenses it gives great results.
I'm amazed at how fast it is (no shutter lag, high speed framing rate) and what a wide range of shutter speeds are available. Let's me take great photos in very challenging conditions.
It seemed bulky at first, but I've gotten used to that and I love how convenient and comfortable it is to use. All the controls are easily accessible and easy to use but there are so many that it will take me a long time to become familiar with them all.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The controls are "right there" without having to go into a menu mode. Great accessibilty. The large, bright LCD is really a plus in the field.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have about 6 Nikon cameras and this is the best of the best.Great stop action and color management.Stands up to extended field use.I love this camera.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Pros: controls under your fingers, no need to enter menus when adjusting for manual modes. Easy to switch between various automatic settings, and manual settings. VERY FAST start up. D-lighting is awesome.
Cons: pricy, for fastest frame rates you must use the "optional" battery pack.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from the D80 what a great move. The colors and sharpness are outstanding. After the learning curve of the controls it is great investment.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I am more & more amazed each shoot...! Get the VR Lens at all cost. You might have to shoot 5 frames at time hand-held; as example, on Safari for even greater results.
Make sure back-up batteries (not Nikon)is for D300...not 200.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Its hard not to love this camera. I have only owned it for a few months but the build quality and picture quality make the move up from the 70s well worth it. I took it on a two week vacation to Maine this summer and was very happy to see the better shots I was getting when using it in lighting situations which before would not have worked at all. I had already bought the 18-200 Nikon lense and on the 300 it focuses faster and the pictures are much sharper. This difference alone makes the shift worth it. You really need to use it for few weeks to appreciate the differences. Some of my really old Nikon lenses from my film days can now be used on the 300 with the autofocus which was an unexpected serendipity. I have some old macro lenses which I had quit using entirely. Owner's Manual is best I have ever had with a camera. I hike a lot and the weight is an issue, especially with the heavier lenses. But even with that one negative, the rest is so worth it that I cannot complain. I would recommend without hesitation to anyone.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I've been using the D300 for about 6 months and it is a big improvement over the D100 and D200. It has a large bright screen and the controls are typically Nikon; great feel and in the right place. One piece of advice, get the SB 800 flash and if possible get two. Very versatile and you can do amazing things with a little practice. Second piece of advice, read the SB 800 manual. It tells how to wirelessly sync up with the camera. It is not written clearly in the camera manual.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The headline says it all. The camera is of the quality one would expect from Nikon. Solidly built, the extra weight helps steady the camera for the shot. The programability of the camera is amazing. I've set the four programs to best suit my needs for landscapes, sports, etc. The controls are easily accessed on the body allowing for minimal use of the Menu. The single issue I have with the camera is the power consumption. It's best to have one or two extra batteries if you plan an extended shoot.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I am still exploring all the possibilites this camera has to offer. It is simply a remarkable piece of workmanship and it has increased my abilities to get the action shots needed in football and baseball. Great Piece of Work Nikon!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I love the range of this camera. High contrast to low contrast pictures handled extremely well. Someone please write a clear easy to use manual. Third party books and videos on how to use the D300 are readily available.

Superb image quality, low noise, robust build, feature packed.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This camera is ideal for evidence photography. The autofocus is better than the D100 (which I also own) especially when using multiple focus points.
This camera is compatible with the VeriPic photo management system and photos can be authenticated by it. This allows photos to be used for evidence photography at police departments, insurance claims and medical documentaiton. Without VeriPic compatibility my employer would not have allowed me to purchase this camera. VeriPic is also able to put full resolution photos D300 photos from the database very quickly (both camera raw and JPeg). I highly recommend the combination of the D300 and VeriPic.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I am a hobbyist photographer and shoot photographs every day. The D300 was a great upgrade from the D70. Much broader ranges in settings, much more custom control and fine tuning. "live view" is a great new feature, and the ISO range is great.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
It was hard for me to believe that Nikon could produce a camera better than the D200, but here it is. The d300 has easily handled every assignment that I have thrown at it! I am still in awe of the features that this camera has, and the ease of use that it provides! What a joy to own and use!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
It amases me how these cameras keep getting better and better all the time. Every time you start to think that they are as good as they need to be, the camera companies raise the bar again.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I use this for nature photography and it works great. Exposure is awesome, and the 51 point focus system works well.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I use the product for high school sports and portraits (about 200 shots per event). It takes wonderful pictures - even better with lens that keeps up with the speed of the camera. However, after only three months, the shutter went out, and the camera was repaired and returned (3 weeks turnaround). Friends and relatives have bought this camera after seeing my photos and they haven't had any problems.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Great camera. I've always been a NIKON fan and this has got to be the best camera they've made in a while. The images are so much better, sharper. The color is much more accurate than some of the older cameras I've owned. Of course, I looked at the D3, but chose this camera because the higher-end cameras are just not worth the extra $$$ considering how quickly they are replaced by cheaper and better digital cameras.
I've been VERY, VERY pleased with this camera.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I just love this camera! The colors that come from the camera just blow me away. Pair this camera up with a pro lens, and you too will be amazed by the pictures you take.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This camera takes all the best features from the D200 and fine tunes the exposure and autofocus system to make this the best camera I have ever used. I switched to Nikon from Canon a year and a half ago and do not regret it. From Nikon's incredible colors and exposure system, to the unique ISO auto feature and LiveView. This is one terrific camera. The biggest difference between this model and the D3 is that the D300 has a sensor 2/3 the size of 35mm film while the D3 has a full sized sensor. Of course I am sure the D3 has many other features but the sensor is make or break for some. I like the smaller sensor area because it means there is a multiplier factor of 1.5 on all my lenses. That means a 200mm f2.8 becomes a 300mm! Not having to carry around a giant lens weighing 10lbs and costing over [$]is a big deal to me. Buy this camera and you will not regret it!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have taken about 3000 photos with this camera and there are many things I love about the camera: fast ISO with low noise, not too heavy, excellent choices in saturation, built in flash is nice, overall quality, menus that are easy to use, easy to use controls, D lighting, monitor quality, bracketing, exposure compensation, etc., etc., etc.
CON: I think that the LiveView operation is noisy for photographing indoor meetings. I also wish it had a built-in "on-off" switch to prevent light from entering the eyepiece viewfinder when using the self timer delay like they do for the D3. Putting that little plastic clip over the eyepiece to prevent light leaks is a pain.
The battery life is OK for the size of the battery, but I carry several backups and I also have a 150 W inverter that I can plug into my car cigarette lighter.
Overall this is a great must-have camera for any serious photographer.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This camera does just about everything right. Have taken thousands of pictures with outstanding results. Have Traveled throughout Alaska and taken Landscapes, wildlife and portraits. Camera just feels right, the balance and grip are excellent. Weather sealing is excellent. Menus are easy and fast to set. Using Memory banks makes it easy to have settings stored for your portraits, landscapes, action and night photography preset or any other settings your wish to store. Great for night shots. Very low noise at high ISO to 3200. Can extend to 6400 if needed. High saturation and contrast in pictures. The same lenses used with other cameras just look better with D300. Highly recommend for enthusiasts and as main or backup camera for pros. This is overkill for a family camera. Heavy to travel with and really needs pro lenses to get the most out of this camera.

This is a great camera out of the box.
Confidence inspiring.
As simple or as detailed as you need it to be.
Helps if you come from a D200/D80 background.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I love this camera. I shoot mostly nature and wildlife shots but also shoot some events like concerts, and festivals.
I like the high ISO allowing me to get pictures in lower light conditions that would not normally be possible without a lot of sensor noise. The extremely fast shutter speeds are great for sports photography or capturing images of birds in flight. Finally, I like the fact that I can use the build in pop-up flash as a commander flash to control two (2) groups of off-camera flashes -- sweet! Not only can the pop-up be used as a commander, it can be use to add fill flash at the same time or commander-only. You future stobist will learn to like this feature too.
Please note that this is not a light camera. It has some weight to it. If you add the MB-D10 grip/battery pack, it is even heavier.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
As a 35-year Minolta veteran who loved his Maxxum/Dynax 7D I felt ready to move up to the new generation of pro-quality, high-res, low-noise Nikon. The camera is silky smooth, fast and responsive and whisper quiet.
I have to add however, that the D300 with 24-120 lens is way heavier than my 7D 24-105 combo was and figuring out how to find relatively basic controls is nowhere near as obvious or intuitive as it was on my Minolta 7D or Dimage A1. This is a camera for someone who's serious about their photography and intends to use the camera often enough to learn and memorize where all the controls are hidden.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from a D50 to the D300 and could not be happier. While the D50 is a wonderful camera, the ability to have great control over every aspect of the camera is what really makes the D300 stand out.
I have used this camera for everything from protrait work to sports to photos of my daughter's pet hamster with amazing results.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Amazing Camera!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This camera is the bomb. I used to have a D70s which was lousy. On the D70, focus was nearly always off, only had 4 focus points - basically it just sucked. Now Im big enough to realize it may have been user error ... BUT ... then I stepped up to the D300 coupled with my Nikon lenses and it is like the difference between night and day. Color saturation is wonderful; auto-focus is spot on. Plenty of options to play with, and if you shoot raw, you can always PP tweak the pixs. I love this camera.
And with lenses ... it absolutely FLIES with the Nikon 70-200/f2.8. Excellent results with the 18-200 as well.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I purchased the D300 to upgrade my capabilities from a D70. My prime target was an increase in megapixels, the higher resolution rear display, noise reduction and the live view mode, mirror lockup, etc (for astrophotography). I was more than pleased with the D300 performance in all of these areas. The D300 well outperformed the D70 for image quality, especially at high ISO ranges. The high ISO capability is quite amazing.
What really kept me repeating 'oh wow!' as I went through the manual, learning and trying the features of the camera was the depth of user programmability and the depth of capability this camera provided over my D70! Here are a few of many 'oh wow' capabilities.
The ability to set up 4 custom camera and 4 custom shooting menus... I can completely reconfigure the camera for action, night time, precision or regular settings.
The external button accessibility to quickly modify metering and focus settings...
Fast and accurate focusing, including continuous tracking and a level of image recognition tracking. Fast and accurate multipoint metering. Multiple exposures, strobe flash, special noise features, etc etc. More than I can relate here.
For most of what I do, it performs excellent, it is easy to work with, it provides a lot of flexibility for any imaging I am doing. A great buy.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I use the D300 primarily for shooting family gatherings. With the addition of my grandaughter to the family, it is getting quite a bit of use! I am never disappointed with any of my shots! Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I use it to photograph items I sell [@] as well as for family snapshots, architecture, nature, and basic astrophotography (I'm just getting started with that). The D300 addressed the issues I had with the D200 and made upgrading an easy decision. It's vastly improved autofocus and exposure make it much easier for me to get great results with just a little effort. The controls are very similar to the D200 but the menus are significantly different; there's definitely a bit of a learning curve.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I am using this camera since January 2008 and have never being so happy. I was waiting this camera (not buying NIKON D80 nor D200) and I am sure did right. Hade many-many happy moments with great photos during my frequent travel. Reliable, comfortable to carry around, even on P-mode giving great results.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I shoot all the time with this camera. Just made the switch to digital, so this is the first DSLR I've owned. Love it. Previous camera was an F100, and I've had no trouble making the switch. Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Just got back from my first trip without a film SLR. I was really nervous about going all digital "in the field". Camera performed flawlessly in all sorts of environments (hot and cold, wet and dusty). Image quality excellent, LCD sharp and bright, even in harsh sunlight.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is my first digital SLR camera. I was exclusively a print and slide film shooter and would scan negatives and slides using a dedicated 35mm scanner. I don't consider myself a "film snob", I was just hesitant in purchasing a DSLR, afraid I wouldn't be happy enough with an entry level DSLR, but wasn't comfortable spending too much on a decent, one step below professional grade camera. I never was truly happy with the results I'd seen from upper end digital SLR cameras in the past. Once the Nikon D300 came out and I saw example photos I finally felt that this camera had achieved what I wanted and what I expected in a DSLR in this price range. I'm extremely surprised at the excellent quality of the photos I can produce using this camera. The extra controls and the low noise at high ISO is truly amazing. I can't say enough about this outstanding camera.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Best in class on pretty much every feature, at least until a newer model comes out. I anticipate that the D300 will still hold it's resale value for years to come given the great quality of the build and it's stellar performance. Highly recommended.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Moved up to D300 from D40 in January. D300 is awesome step-up product. Worth the extra $$. Don't be intimidated by the 400 pg manual. One of the DVD's or book guides can get you everything you need in a format not written by engineers. Sensible, well-placed controls make it unneccessary to plow through menus to change key settings. Sensor is huge and produces clear images with any Nikon/Nikkor lens. LCD is sharp, but sometimes tough to see in direct sunlight (which is true with any LCD). Paired with a f/2.8 lens, I was able to get pro-quality images on my last trip.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The D300 changes the way digital photography is done. At 3200 ISO lense selection can now include mid-priced zooms with no flash needed. Faster CF cards supported (UDMA, 300X), and faster everything makes digital easier, better, and more fun than ever.

Compared to my previous Nikon D70, this is a big leap forward for me to own D300. With the amazing speed of 6 frames per second, I have had many great photos from Aikido events to my daughter's high jump in track & field. Large LCD is really helpful to review the picture or view the camera menu. Color is so vivid. In general, this is a GREAT, GREAT camera.
Strongly recommend to use with Nikkor 18-200 VR lense.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is a great camera. Some people do not like some small things, every camera on the market has that problem. It is built like a tank, handles rain here in Florida with no problem. Some might think it is a bit heavy with the battery pack, but I use the 80-200 F 2.8 with it all the time.
This is a very reliable piece of equipment. I have used Canon, Hasselblad, Rolliflex and Nikon. This is a joy to use and made in the finest Nikon tradition. The exceed processor is a nice addition.
It handles birds in flight going into or out of heavy shade with the d-lighting very well. The low light ability with the high ISO is a treat. I specialized in doing that in film before and this camera is very good at allowing you to do this kind of shooting without a lot of noise.
I would think this is a great backup camera for working pros who have the D3, for others, this will be a first rate front line camera.
I like the ability to use the 30 year old lenses as I find some of the manual focus lenses are more to my liking than some of the new ones. I really like the Micro manual lenses and the manual primes although the auto focus and tracking is right on when using AF lenses. The viewfinder is bright enough to let you to do that even at a distance. The high ISO is great for shooting the birds in lower light especially in flight.
Overall I give it a 4 out of 5 simply because I do not believe there is a perfect camera out there since we all use them for different things and see flaws in cameras that do not do things we think they should. It is a keeper and one that people should consider purchasing if they are more than a beginner. This camera is not for the auto shooters and people who know very little about camera functions. This is a pro quality camera and not for beginners.
I have let several people shoot with it and they all are amazed. Biggest complaint is the weight, not an issue for this 57 year old at all. If you are looking for a auto function light weight camera, this is not for you. If you are looking to step up a notch from consumer type cameras, this is definitely something you should check out.

I recently upgraded to the D300 as I had been shooting film and using the D50 for my photographic projects and gigs. Now I don't need either as the D300 is my go-to tool!
What's great about the D300 is its solid feel that just exudes confidence when you hold it. Also 12 MP (usually the minimum required resolution that most magazines will take for a digital photograph), 6 fps, and the beauty of Nikon's image processing engine aren't too shabby either.
But the best thing about the D300, technical babble aside, is that it gets out of your way when you're using it by having intuitive menu systems and by being so ergonomic. It just simply is a joy to use and the results speak for themselves!
Upgrading from a lower-end DSLR and serious about what you do? I say go for the D300!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have been shooting weddings and portraits for over 20 years, and this is one of the best digital cameras that I have ever used. Even though it is listed in the "pro-sumer" category, it will give you the professional results of the D2 camera at a fraction of the cost.
At first it may feel at bit "off balance" in the hands of a professional, but once you add on the optional MB-D10 multi battery pack under it, it feels comfortable and balanced. It was definitely made to have the MB-D10 attached to it, and it makes taking vertical photos easier too.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
For those who need a good back-up, or are transitioning to professional calibre you can't go wrong.
Though the slower performance at 14 bit is a slight annoyance, it's a fantastic camera. Portrait work, landscapes produce outstanding results. It's a bit of a dog when it comes to fast moving action, but it more than holds it's own against the D2 line.
It's proven itself rugged, reliable and highly flexible.
Nikon has a world beater in this camera.

I upgraded from a D70s, this camera is the bussiness, for me. All Features are very easy to use with minimal reading of the manual. If you like taking good pictures and are looking to upgrade or looking to buy a lower end DSLR, just buy this camera. The money you spent on the lower end DSLR is not going to save you any thing.
Buy a good fast lens, this camera will shock you.

This is a great camera. The noise level at high ISO is well within the acceptable range. The 3D tracking focus feature makes it perfect for weddings. The controls are easy to navigate and the menu controls are straight forward. If you can't afford a D3 like me this is the next best thing.

I am very pleased when I moved from my D100 to D300. I like to carry it wherever I go. Comfortable when holding it. Easy access to controls. Remember to carry the manual always because you may need to refer back to it sometimes.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have a D50. I bought 3 lens with the VR in them for it. When I stepped up to the D300, I'm able to use the same lens. I got the D300 to have more control over what I shot and it's been worth it. I don't really see much different in the continuous low and high speed. They both seem to shoot fast. Not a bad thing, just not a big thing either.
There is a lot of reading to go along with all the bells and whistles on this one. Carry the books with you so you can refer back to them as needed.
I look forward to using it for a long time to come.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I've just come back to photography after 23 yrs away, starting with a D40X and just having to move up to the D300, it's given me the NEED to keep it with me every time I leave the house. I just can't fault it, she's like a horse that WANTS to be ridden, a girl that DESERVES to be treated like a lady, it never ends! There's hundreds of reviews that will tell you the perfect spec the D300 has, what I can tell you is the joy you'll get from it. Like the first time I took and developed/enlarged my first b/w film and the kick I got from showing the prints off...it's THAT good ! Being fair, there's nothing wrong with the D40x, at all, but put some fast glass on the 300 and you,re in a different world, past taking pictures and being led into wanting to create art ! Yes, it nearly wiped me out paying for it, but was it worth it? I would tell you how much....but it'll be sunrise soon and I'm NOT going to miss it ! If you're able...JUST BUY ONE ! You'll save money in the end cuz I think it'll be a decade before a better dSLR comes along no matter how many more pixels and whistles anyone tacks on. Simple...she's a dream !

I love it. It is so worth the money. If you have a Nikon DSLR and you think it can't get any better, it does! This D300 is worth every penny. It makes your life so much easier from the menu to the big LCD screen.

In all type of weather condition from cold to hot. Mostly at motorcycle events. Hard to see the LCD in bright sunlight. Live veiw should have been left off. Don't like to redo photos in camera. I think it is a good field camera.

You need a good lens to get the best from this camera. Also, things to consider to complete the package are: gadget bag, spare battery (buy original Nikon), flash (SB-600 or if you have the cash SB-800), charger and two sets of NiMH AA batteries for the flash, at least 4G CF card and UV lens filters.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The picture quality from this camera is absolutely breathtaking, as is the 400+ page manual. Do yourself a huge favor and read this beast cover to cover. There are many options this camera affords, and picking the wrong one can produce underwhelming results. This camera is NOT for point-n-shooters; it offers a lot, but demands that you put up with a steep learning curve.
I am moving from a D200, and this camera is essentially an improvement upon everything that I wanted improved in the D200. Low-light performance is improved, and I think very good. The auto-dynamic range feature works wonders. The auto-focus is killer, but you do need to understand all its modes and choose between them as the occasion dictates. The improved noise characteristics, in-camera sharpening and increased contrast availability has really cut down on my post-processing time, and the great majority of my pictures now go to print (and archive) straight from the camera. Now only if it would correct for wide-lens perspective and I would never have to upgrade photoshop again!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from the D200 after reading the glowing reviews- they are all true! This camera builds on the strengths of the D200, while improving on the shortcomings of its predecessor. One of the most frustrating experiences with the D200 was its myriad of focus point settings. The D300 simplifies the process and fixed the D200's problems track focussing.
I dumped my Canon 20D and Digital Rebel XTi for the D200 and D80 and I am very happy with my choice. The D300 has more megapixels than the 40D and has the unique ISO Auto feature which is very handy. Add to the the Live View and spectacular color and you have a true winner!

Have owned a F100 and D100 prior. The D300 is the best I've owned. Very good auto features but also good long exposure manual features. Resolution in extreme blowups great. I make large exhibits as large as 3'x8' and the detail is terrific. Easy to learn with very well written manual.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I replaced my Nikon D2X with a D300 and MB-D10 Battery Pack. I sold my D2X for $2500 and picked up the D300 for [$] from Ritz. The Battery Pack was an extra [$]. The coolest thing is that Nikon released three D2x Picture Controls to program into the D300 (and D3) so that we could emulate the D2x shooting modes for those of us that loved how the D2x color, tone and hues worked for portraiture. So, I now have a high ISO, weather-proof camera that has less ISO noise than my D2X, has two LIVE VIEW modes which are great in the studio. The shutter in the D300 has the same "wear rating as the D2x (approximately 150,000 cycles). The battery pack is a HUGE improvement over the D200's MB-D200 pack as it is made of metal, not plastic and has a vastly improved D-Series Pro Battery insert. I use the AUTO ISO feature with Aperture Priority for my journalistic shooting and this camera nails the exposure every time. I LOVE the "D-Lighting" which is really a Dynamic Range Adjustment in the Expeed Processor. Recovering shadow detail and not blowing out highlights as the image is captured in the camera is far superior to doing the same in post-processing with Photoshop or Capture NX or Lightroom. I keep this feature on all the time. The colors are much more saturated when I want them to be by using the newer, better VIVID mode. The "MY Menu" area has saved me tons of menu searching time, by allowing me to place shortcuts to my favorite adjustments in the main menus, allowing me to change the look and feel of my photos on the fly. I can instantly emulate the look and feel of Extachrome 64, Fuji Velvia or Tri-X by zipping into my Custom made Picture Controls. The LCD screen(D3 and D300) is awesome! A great feature for those of us that are over 40 and pushing things away at arm's length to read is that you can hit an info button on the back of the camera and see ALL the info on the Big bright LCD screen that you can barely make out on the Top info screen on the camera. The LCD screen also magically adjusts contrast depending on the viewing conditions around you. Thank You NIKON! There is an old saying that Canon is designed by Engineers and Nikon is designed by Photographers. This camera actually gives that saying some credence.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is my all time favorite camera to shoot pictures. My subject matter varies and I always get superior results with the D300. Even in low light venues such as acqariums and museums the image quality is superb. I even got great shots shooting in the nocturnal house without a flash.

Love this camera. I've been looking to upgrade to digital from my F100, and was going to get a D200. The owner of my local camera shop talked me into waiting for the D300. I can't compare the D200 to the D300, but I can tell you I love the D300. Fast, smooth, and quiet. The LCD screen is really accurate. The body feels sturdy and isn't any heavier than my F100, really, and I thought it would be. Battery life is really good. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I 'graduated' from a D50 to the D300. I use the same lenses (Nikkor 18-200mm VR and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8) and flash (SB-600) but my pictures are noticably better.
Actually I haven't shot with the Tamron yet, but the D300 actually improves the sharpness of the Nikkor lens! If it does this with the Tamron - which is a very sharp lens already - that would be some feat. Can't wait to try.
Flash photography with the D300 is a whole new experience. A comparison to the D50 isn't fair, but the D300 and SB-600 pair are something else. The amount of control over flash output is so much better on the D300 and I mean auto control - I shoot TTL and don't make any manual adjustments; my flash pictures are signficantly better.
The D300, with it's 3D focus tracking, let's me catch sharp pictures of my son's basketball games effortlessly. Something that is very hard to do with the D50. Oh, and the 1/350 shutter speed with flash helps out here too.
Skin colors are more natural too. Exposure is much better than on the D50. The D300 CMOS sensor has such low noise that pictures of my daughter's birthday cake taken without flash and lit only with the candles on her cake, were just great. The D50 would have produced inferior pictures in this situation.
Yes, it's no surprise the D300 is better than my D50. But to see how big the difference actually is was surprising. Pleasantly surprising :^)
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I cannot describe my enthusiasim for this camera, it simply CANNOT get any better than this. It is so easy to use, completely professional, the pictures come out gorgeous....I love the metering system, it's just so wonderful. I like that you can alter some photos right there on the camera..switch to black and white, natural tones, vivid colors, and so on..(but not too many options, which I like)
I am not a professional photographer, however, my hobby seems to be drifting more in that direction, especially as I educate myself more in the photography field. I had the Nikon D-70, which I loved, but it had a few things that I wished could be improved. The D-300 definitely meets my needs (and exceeds!).
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Have used a Nikon D70 for several years and have always been satisfied. For a couple years, I've wanted to upgrade to the D200, but decided to wait until the D300 arrived. I received it two weeks ago and am thrilled by the quality of my pics. I really love this new camera.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is the 7th Nikon body I have purchased. I have a lot of film time and have been looking for the right digital SLR. I have been waiting for the right body that would accept my fairly large assortment of non-CPU Nikkor lenses. When the D3/D300 hit, I was intrigued. After a lot of research I bit the bullet. I went for the D300.
This camera is amazing. For the first two weeks I tested every lighting and shooting challenge I could find to push it to its limits. In the worst situations it handles 90-95 perent of what I throw at it; automatically. For the most difficult situations, there is complete user control to get exactly what I want. As an old time film guy, this camera is what I think the digital camera inventor envisioned. Everything else was just R and D. I would have loved to go with the D3, but most of my work is with longer lenses so full frame was less of an issue with me... and I took the price savings to pick up a few ED AF lenses so I am way ahead of the game. Every time I use it I am astounded with its ease of use. The meter/sensor/processor is remarkable. Construction is bullet proof; typical pro Nikon. My dozen or so AI lenses function as designed (Loading into the lens data program is fast and easy).
Reader note. To be fair, I am very Nikon biased. I have never been displeased with any Nikon product I have ever owned. I stick with Nikkor glass and have never strayed. This camera is yet one more reason I continue to be loyal. Lenses I bought in 1978 work perfectly on this camera (albeit at the level that they were designed to function). Still, I am making use of this fantastic meter and imaging technology with 1970s AI lenses.
I am used to big cameras (OLD F2AS's with MDII motors) so I added the battery pack. Makes for a nice feeling camera; I don't mind the weight. Solid ergonomics, easy to use control positions. Display is bright, clear. Manual is Huge! But a few hours and I am comfortable with most all features...very intuitive. (Again... I am coming out of the caves from older pro film cameras as well, so those keeping up with technolgy better than I, will no doubt find this very user friendly.)
If you are looking for the ability to use older lenses, have total control over the camera, take advantage of the astonishing metering system...D300 will meet that mission. If you want the ultra wide capability and have the extra money, the D3 might be your answer.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Used it for two weeks before I took it on a job. It worked flawlessly. It's so easy to use I left the manual at home.

I started out with a D1, upgraded to a D1X and then a D70 for everyday use. The D300 is by far the best Nikon I have used and in my opinion is as good as the [$] D3. Get it with the MB-D10 batterypack and enjoy up to 8 frames per second shooting.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I received one of the first D300's in early November. I've had a lot more time not just to put the camera through its paces. No need to mention the pros and cons re: performance or controls. Instead, focus on the D300's strengths when post-processing and printing. Until the D300, I never had a shot from another camera where I could not improve it by using PhotoShop, Lightroom, or various noise plug-ins. Since the D300 is a big investment for most, take the time to comparison shop based on camera output not just input. Use the same Nikon lenses on various other Nikon cameras, or use their equivalent with Canon or Pentax, shooting the same subjects. While in the store, output directly to your laptop, Kodak print kiosk, or even one of those portable 4x6 printers in the store [...] The only thing better is the full-frame D3, but at more than double the price, you would be better off buying some non-DX glass.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I purchased the D300 for one very specific reason... Action sports.
Having purchased a D40 for my daughters cheerleading competitions, it only took two uses to determine a couple things. I needed faster FPS and more light. Competition cheerleading is usually held in lower that light situations and the kit lens on the D40 was not enough.
The higher ISO availability of the D300 as well as 6FPS coupled with the 28-75mm f2.8 Tamron lens (which would not work on the D40), there is no comparison.
I will be adding the MB-D10 grip to up the FPS to 8 in the near future.
I have used the D300 over Christmas with exceptional results.
The D300 is an outstanding product for the price. It's basically a D3 in a smaller body.
For those contemplating the D300, just do it, you will not be dissapointed.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I traded up from a D80. Good move on my part. The D300 is simply awesome. It is sharper at every level. The custom settings are wonderful. The D300 is built better, is dust and water resisistant, and the 51-pt autofocus is spot on.
I mostly use it for action and travel. The 6 fps also is a big improvement, as is the scene recognition and ability to work with AI/AIS lenses.
Only played with Live View a little but it looks like a feature that will be fun.
The most important feature is image quality and here Nikon blows away all the other DX bodies. High ISO (i.e., 3200) really works, something I wished was possible with the D80. It is about 2 stops faster than the D80, 1 stop faster than the D200.
If you want the best DX body out there, this is it.

This is my first Nikon after having Canon's 10D and A2 and I love it!
I don't believe in the "one or the other", "Nikon vs Canon" stuff.
I do believe that the image comes first and the camera is a tool to help get you there.
This is by far one of the best tools that should last for many, many years.
Camera makers may flood us with new cameras every 18 months but I'm not buying everytime the wind blows. The D300 has many features that will be around much longer than the current new camera cycle so my next camera should be the Canon 70D or the Nikon D600...

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I got my D300 from Ritz on 12/24 and have been using it daily (I am retired) and tried out all my Nikon lenses. I found it far from good with the 18-200 VR. It is simply not as sharp as the D70/D200 with this particular lens. I am still trying to find the best settings for it. The AF fine tuning cannot compensate all the range such as focal lengths, distance, aperture, etc. Other than this disappointment, the D300 is a great camera and is far superior than the D200. It also works well with Kenko 1.4X TC @f5.6 (70-300VR) and produces great pictures. I also love the "Vivid" mode which produces the best color one could only imagine. Just not working well with this 18-200 VR, my favorite lens, darn!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
So far, I've taken a few hundred shots and every one is excellent. You really have to work at it to take a bad shot. The Live View feature helps make every shot look good.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I just upgraded from the Nikon D50 (very big step) and I absolutely Love this camera! The menus are more detailed, the 3D-tracking is amazing and the overall quality of the camera is great! The burst mode is perfect for action shots but the subject has to be pretty bright to get anything, burst mode's shutter speed is fantastic, definitely Nikon's first "machine gun"! The only con is that I can't use the two batteries I have for my D50.. but I can get over that. C: This is a Great Camera!!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is a great camera. So far not a single picture came out overexposed. Some people recomend setting exposure compensation to - 2/3 but I am happy with -1/3 or none.
I love this camera! Great job Nikon!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I had purchased a Canon 40D after using Canon at work for years. I was impressed by the 40D but once I was able to try out the D300, I returned the 40D and put every penny I had into this D300 and haven't looked back.
I am struggling now to find affordable Nikon glass but there are some. I recently purchased a 18-200 VR lens as an all-around lens. I am picking up a 80-400 VR in the coming months and will start adding primes as I find deals on them.
The D300 has some amazing features and the 51-point AF is simply awesome! Coming from Canon's 9-point AF, the Nikon is truly light-years ahead of the 40D.
If looking at both the 40D and the D300, save up a few more weeks and get the D300, you will be so glad that you did!

I own a D70 and D200 and played with the D300 and D3 at a show. I am convinced Nikon should have a model in between them and the price. I want a full-frame D400 with sensor cleaner. The D3 is too high a price not to have a sensor cleaner. I hate the dust that messes up my pictures! So I am going to wait about a year to see what Nikon does. I hate it when they pull your chain!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This thing is simply amazing! Color is dead-on in any given condition. No need to post-process any images....which is a good thing due to the lack of software support for NEF files. This will get better though as the camera becomes more popular. It is still quite new. had to wait a couple of weeks to get it, but the wait was well worth it.
The menus are well laid out and most things can be done with the conrols on the camera itself vs. going into menus. The controls are very well designed and intuotive, taking virtually no time to master. Support for NEF files is lacking. Nikon Cpature NX came with it, but this software is so pathetic and SLOW that it is virtually uselss....even on a P4 3.3 GhZ with 4GB RAM with SATA 3 drives. PS3 lacks plug-ins as of yet. This lack of software has me shooting straight JPEG now, which just may be how I go about it from now on, as there really is no need for post processing. That's how great the D300 is! 3-color histogram on the camera immediately after shooting is nice. Screen is crystal clear. It is on the pricey side, but it is a pro-level camera, built like a tank, and easy to learn (mainly because the controls are so well thought out) Just buy one. You won't be sorry you did!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This camera was an upgrade from the D100 for me. I shoot a lot of commercial pictures at work with a D80 and use this camera mostly for family and trip photos. This camera is day and night to the D100. Not only is the sensor quality leap years better but the software allows for 20 times the flexibility while taking pictures. The live view is really cool. It really is for studio pictures regardless of which mode you use it in. The time it requires to focus does not allow it to be useable with any subject that is moving. I do however wish that I had this feature on the D80 because I would wear it out with use. The camera puts a smile on everyone’s face that shoots in the continuous mode, including myself. I use an SB-600 and am able to shoot 6-8 continuous shots with flash using lithium’s in the flash. The camera is balanced very well. I use it mostly with a 24-120 AF-S VR lens and it is a great combo. Everyone wants the Nikon 18-200 and all I can say is buyer beware. That lens is a DX format lens and I would bet that the D300 will be the last of the DX format or Canon will dominate the market. The 18-200 lenses will only work at 6 meg pixels on the full frame camera's. I am only going to buy AF or AF-s lens for now on. I also have the following lenses which work great with this camera: 170-500 Sigma, 70-210 2.8 Sigma, 18-200 Tameron, 70-300 VR Nikon, 24-120 VR Nikon, 105 Tonkina, and a 90 Vivitar macro which I was amazed to say the camera can read the aperture of even though it is a completely manual lens. All in all I would give this camera “2 thumbs up”, it is a huge improvement over the past models and it looks like Nikon has done it right once again....

Excellent tool for professional, too expensive for most amatures. It is on par replacment for my F3. Bit too noisy and not sharp enough for my taste but still very good. It is best camera in it's class.
It's a pity that we had to wait so long!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is a great leap forward for not just Nikon, but for DSLR systems everywhere. The 51 point autofocus system is fast and accurate. The live view feature gives it additional versatility for odd angles. The super-clean low ISO images are spectacular. And the burst speed is among the fastest out there. I shoot lots of indoor evens where light is low and flashes aren't allowed. My ability to get the shot has increased tenfold. This really is a baby D3.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I received mine yesterday and I must say this camera beats the rest in the APS-C sensor range! Image quality is outstanding, with a little tweaking though in the settings. D-lighting works very well. Focusing is fast and accurate. Excellent build quality. Great LCD, which I think is a great tool for Art/ Landscape photography. This camera has excellent features for achieving high quality images. I highly recommend this baby to any serious photographer

Moved up from a D100 to the D300. The difference in these cameras is unbelievable. I am taking hockey photos and the clarity on each picture is unreal. Great speed on the frames per second when there is a fight happening. I can't wait to use this at the barrel races. This camera was well worth the wait for it.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Use for personal photography as well as in my consulting business. Best quality pictures I have seen from any digital camera short of full frame. Outstanding features and performance tuning capabilities.

handles as a camera should. good weight. buttons are just the right size, good placement.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
As digital technology progresses, this is by far the best semi-pro camera Nikon has built to date. It is easy to use, takes wonderful pictures, and has the best LCD on the market. If you are in the market for a DSLR, give this camera careful consideration. I am blown away by the vivid colors it produces. When set to "Vivid" +3 the colors look better than they did in person. I look for the D300/D3 to be the camera of the year.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I waited to buy this instead of the D200 and I think it was the right decision. Liveview makes setting up tripod pictures incredibly easy and there are so many other upgrades. The camera is very easy to hold and just feels right.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I moved up from my D70 so I had a working knowledge of many of the terms and expressions used in the manual for the D300. To get the most out of this baby you must STUDY, not just read the 421 page manual. You would not pay the price for a true sports car and then only drive it to church on Sundays. The D300 is a fine piece of equipment. Put the pedel to the metal!
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I primarily use the camera for travel, but do occasionally take event photographs. This camera is a big leap from my D70 in terms of viewfinder, LCD screen, high ISO performance, and list is endless. Liveview probably not that useful for me; the focusing was awkward in this mode.
Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from the D100, and if I had given Nikon a list of improvements, it would have been a waste of time. Nikon did everything I would have suggested, and then did much more! [...]

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Cameras owned vary from point and shoots by Kodak and canon including the G7.
Film and digital cameras include the Konica TC autoflex, Minolta 7000i, Nikon F100, and Nikon D70. Nikon lenses include, 70-200 mm konica 28-200mm, 18-70mm DX, 70-200mm 2.8 VR ED.
I ordered the camera back in September and I have only had the camera a week but, the first thing I noticed is how well the camera balances in your hand. Much EASYIER to navigate menus than D70 plus screen size helps. This is the camera I wanted when I bought the D70. I does feel about the same as my F100 and just as well built. I have handled the large DX cameras from Nikon but prefer this cameras size for days when I am hiking and carrying the camera all day. Very fast with action shots with my 70-200mm VR lense.
I would like to see a full frame version of this camera for those wide angle shots.
It will take me weeks to try all the things this cameras can do. Filters can be used at digital level. WOW. I hope Nikon sends software updates with additional filter, etc.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have had my Nikon D300 for just about a week now, and the most amazing features about it are its very vivid and amazing colors, far better than any other Nikon DSLR, and the “Active D-Lighting”
I love saturated colors in my photos and the D300 performs incredibly well in this department. Skies are deep blue, autumn leaves are bright (even well after the peak colors here in NJ a few weeks ago) The Active D Lighting is very impressive, I have tried to take some pictures to see how much the camera will control the highlights and shadows, you really have to go looking for trouble in order to push the Active D Lighting’s limits. Basically it has ended post processing for me (with the exception of cropping) For me there is no more need to bump up the saturation or play with the tones and contrasts, with the D300 I can get it right the first time.
Physically the D300 is spectacular, it fits perfectly in my hands, all the controls are right where my F80’s are (which is very nice). For people stepping up from smaller DSLR’s like the D50/D40 it will feel heavy, but I’ve gone on a few 5+ hour hikes and never even noticed it around my neck.
The menu system is a little complex, but should be expected for a semi-pro camera. All you have to do is spend an hour or two setting up your custom menus and custom programs and you’re set.

The 51 point focus is great I used it at my sons basketball game every thing was in perfect focus .I upgraded from a Nikon D-50 with a 70-200 f/2.8 vr lens. witch performed very well with that lens. With the D-300 I just can't believe the differance night & day its easy to use its exstreamly fast. All I can say is Nikon thank you for greate product. ps. the extra battery pack is well worth the investment and get large flash cards this thing is really fast.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
The build quality is Nikon at its best. The picture quality can be as good as the photographer. This camera is really fast, fast focus, fast frames, and fast setup. While it is a pro level camera, it's menus and options are very user friendly. It is not a camera for everyone. However, it is a camera that can keep up with any serious photographer.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D300 Professional Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I'm an old time shooter with a large investment on high quality old lenses. I'm still using lot of film because the digital SLRs that can use the lenses I own are way out of my budget. D200 was one that I would've bought, but it was worse than it's Canon counterparts in performance.
The D300 is well constructed. It is very easy to use even for the technically challenged. The pictures taken with it are mind blowing. The high-ISO performance is much much better than D200 it replaces.
I use mainly prime lenses and so I have to change the lenses very often. So, dust on the the sensor was a big concern for me. D300's self cleaning sensor eliminates that concern.
The only problem I find with the D300 is it's DX format sensor. It makes my ultra-wide lenses not so wide. And, I like wides. I hope that there will be an upgrade to D300 soon with FX sensor like the D3.

As a tester for Nikon, I got a hold of a production model, Nikon D300, due to be released in November, 2007.
If there is a single word to describe this camera, it would be WOW!
