The D80 works with the efficiency and grace of a fine-tuned instrument, powering up in only 0.18 seconds and capturing a picture with an imperceptible shutter lag time of just 80 milliseconds (0.08 seconds). A new 11-area auto- focus system detects focus with superb precision and can even track a moving subject across the frame, shifting focus instantly and automatically to any of the 11 auto-focus points that detect the subject. The D80's large, bright 0.94x viewfinder affords a remarkable view not found in many digital SLRs, making critical composition easier and more pleasing. The camera's rechargeable battery can last up to 2700 shots on a single charge, while also providing a real-time Fuel Gauge of the percentage of charge remaining in the battery at all times. And like all Nikon digital SLR cameras, the D80 feels solid and substantial while being both compact and comfortable. But more experienced photo enthusiasts will admire the D80 most for its bevy of creative controls and features that make photography with the camera so much more enjoyable and rewarding. Its new Optimize image menu, for instance, offers complete control over the look and feel of your pictures, allowing you to boost saturation and create pictures with vivid color, or shoot black-and- white pictures with a choice of four filtration effects, or even create your own custom look that expresses personal style and creativity. Other creative tools include an all-new image Retouch menu for in-camera image editing, built-in i-TTL flash control with the ability to control up to two remote groups of Speedlights, as well as over 32 Custom settings to customize several attributes of the camera's performance.

Unrivaled Image Quality - At the heart of any digital camera lies its image processing engine - a sophisticated processor that determines, among other things, the overall color rendering and image quality of pictures taken with the camera. One of the key advances developed for the D80 is Nikon's own high-resolution image processing engine that inherits best-of-breed technologies from Nikon's latest professional digital SLR cameras, including color independent analog pre- conditioning and high-precision 12-bit digital image processing algorithms, which combine to produce natural-looking images that benefit from faithful color and tone reproduction. A new dedicated high-performance processing chip greatly accelerates performance on all levels, while also achieving lower power consumption, assuring more pictures per battery charge.

The D80 also benefits from Nikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II, to ensure accurate exposures, even in the most challenging lighting conditions. Evaluating, rather than merely measuring or averaging the true content of each scene, input from the system's frame-wide 420-pixel sensor is automatically referenced against an onboard database of over 30,000 scenes from actual photography to calculate final exposure value. Variable Center- Weighted metering and Spot metering centered on the active focus area are also available, as are exposure compensation and auto exposure bracketing. Sophisticated exposure automation combined with options for complete user control help to make the D80 an ideal high-performance digital SLR for passionate photography enthusiasts.

Speed to Burn - One of the hallmarks of Nikon's digital SLR cameras is how fast they operate, not only when capturing images, but also when processing them. The D80 proudly carries this tradition forward. Not only is the camera powered up and ready to shoot in only 0.18 seconds, it also reacts at blazing speeds when the shutter button is pressed. With a minimal shutter lag time of just 80 milliseconds (0.08 seconds), and the ability to shoot 3 frames per second up to 100 consecutive shots (in JPEG Normal mode), the camera is ready to shoot whenever that priceless expression or special moment presents itself. Images shot are processed instantly and recorded rapidly to the inserted SD memory card. Preview images are also displayed near instantly.

The D80's new 11-area auto-focus system also fulfills its role in the overall speed of the camera, delivering fast and precise focus under varying shooting conditions. Adopting a refined version of Nikon's advanced Multi-CAM 1000 AF Sensor Module, this new 11-area AF system with center area wide-frame operation adds effective new focusing options that will instill greater confidence in getting the desired shot. An all-new Auto-Area AF mode measures all eleven focus areas and automatically determines which of them are on the primary subject.

Creativity Comes Standard - The Nikon D80 is designed to inspire creativity at every level. For this reason, the camera includes a wide assortment of features and tools to empower all kinds of users, ranging from the novice to the seasoned pro, to pursue their creative vision, instantly and right from within the camera.

D80 photographers will enjoy the camera's built-in Multiple Exposure mode for unique composite image effects, or the Optimize menu options that closely tailor results to the scene at hand or the intended use of an image or to a custom preference of the photographer. Optimization of sharpening, tone (contrast), color, saturation and hue is controlled by the user-selected choice of Normal, Softer, Vivid, More Vivid, Portrait, Custom and Black-and- White. The black-and-white mode can be customized using red, green, yellow and orange filter effects as well as image sharpening and tone compensation.

The D80 also features an all-new image Retouch menu, with exclusive in- camera editing functions that will certainly keep D80 users engaged when they're not busy shooting. Options within the Retouch menu include:
- D-Lighting: Automatically balances underexposed portions of an image to enhance detail in these areas, without affecting the highlights of the picture.
- In-camera Red-eye Correction: Automatically removes the annoying red-eye effect sometimes caused by flash.
- Trim: Images can be trimmed within the camera to produce smaller files with reduced display sizes for easy sharing or greater efficiency for specific end purposes.
- Image Overlay: Merges a pair of selected RAW files taken with the D80 to create a composite image within the camera as a RAW or JPEG file. This feature is especially useful when trying to create a soft-focus effect with two similar images.
- Monochrome settings: Monochrome settings can be applied to any color image in the camera, to convert it to a pleasing monochromatic picture, either in black-and-white, sepia or cyanotype.
- Filter Effects: Can be used to emulate and apply the effects of a Skylight filter or a Warming filter to any image stored on the inserted SD card. A Customized Color menu within filter effects can also be used to make subtle shifts in color to any image in the camera.

For anyone just beginning to enjoy the added performance and versatility of digital SLR photography, creative shooting is as simple as rotating the Digital Vari-Program mode dial on the camera. The D80 has seven preconfigured program modes to optimize the camera for specific shooting conditions and greatly increase the chances of taking a great photograph. In Portrait Mode, for example, the camera automatically optimizes the color, hue, and saturation levels to capture the most flattering skin tones, softens the focus of the background images to emphasize the face and applies a milder form of in-camera sharpening. Users can choose from Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close- Up, Sports, Night Landscape or Night Portrait.

The D80 also offers creative ways to share pictures, with its built-in Pictmotion slideshow feature, which includes style selections that control transitions and background music. Shows can be enjoyed on the 2.5-inch LCD, or complete with audio on a television when connected via the supplied AV cable.

Creature Comfort - The D80 features refined ergonomics and design, borne from Nikon's extensive experience designing successful SLR cameras for over 50 years. As a result, the camera is incredibly comfortable to use and handle, and incorporates several new features that enhance its usability. The D80 features a large and bright viewfinder with large 0.94x magnification to ensure the clearest view possible for precise composition. Included is a built-in diopter adjustment control knob that also makes it easier to fine- tune the view to match eyesight. The viewfinder's integrated grid display can also be turned on to assist with composition.

A large new 2.5-inch 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD provides an ultra- wide 170-degree viewing angle from all directions. Navigating the spacious preview of your images is easy with a new dedicated Zoom button, magnifying images on screen up to 25 times their original size. A new RGB histogram display aids in evaluating exposures with greater precision. Other playback options include single frame, 4 or 9-image thumbnail display, an improved histogram display and highlight point display. A new menu interface featuring refinements to the carefully chosen color scheme and increased font size makes navigation easier on the eye, easier to understand and easier to use. Menus can be customized to display only selected items using the new My Menu set.

The D80 is slimmer and more compact than its predecessors, and remains true to Nikon's commitment to intuitive operation. The size, layout and operation of all buttons and controls are designed for maximum ease of use.

System Strength - With the D80, users also have complete and seamless compatibility with Nikon's extensive Total Digital Imaging System, and the camera is designed to take advantage of many of the technologies built into Nikon accessories. The D80's powerful built-in Speedlight is compatible with Nikon's Creative Lighting System, and can wirelessly control up to two groups of Speedlights in full TTL mode, taking the guesswork out of multiple flash photography. Compatible Speedlights within the Creative Lighting System include the SB-800, SB-600 and Nikon's Wireless Close-up Speedlight Systems, featuring the SB- R200.

The D80 also offers unprecedented compatibility with Nikon's extensive selection of AF Nikkor lenses as well as new DX Nikkor lenses, which are designed exclusively for use with Nikon DX format digital SLR cameras. Nikkor lenses, famous for optical superiority, add to the D80's ability to deliver outstanding images.

The D80 will also have an optional MB-D80 battery pack available, extending the shooting capability in an ergonomic design that adds shooting stability. Able to run on either one or two EN-EL3e rechargeable batteries or six AA-size batteries, the pack also features an additional command dial and alternative buttons for shutter release and AE-Lock/AF-Lock that make vertical shooting more comfortable.

The D80 is also fully compatible with Capture NX software (available for purchase separately), Nikon's highly versatile and elegantly simple new photo editing solution designed to help photographers tap the full potential of NEF (RAW) images. Featuring an innovative user interface that provides easier access to powerful and visually intuitive enhancement tools, Capture NX's powerful photo image processing and editing tools can also be applied to JPEG and TIFF files to satisfy a broader range of photofinishing needs and applications.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

This is a very impressive, versatile camera, with almost all of the features of a much more expensive camera The features of the next best Nikon models are relatively unimportant to me (video, fps speed, megapixels), which makes this camera a very good value. For the avid non-professional photographer, this is a great tool.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this camera as a step up from my point-and-shoot pocket digital and what a difference! The pocket camera is for snapshots while the D80 is for photographs. It has all of the flexibilty I need to control exposure, focus, metering, and some limited in-camera editing. It feels well balanced in my hand, is not heavy, and will allow me to add additional lenses and other Nikon accessories easily. Although other cameras offer higher resolution, the megapixel count on the D80 is fine for prints as large as 20X30, a size I can't ever imagine exceeding. The LCD is a good size and bright enough to easily see in all but the brightest outdoor conditions. Unfortunately, the LCD cannot be used to compose the picture before it is taken. All of that must be done through the eyepiece. It is a feature I wish the camera had, but in order to get it I would have had to step up to the D90 and I didn't need the video capabilities included in that higher priced camera. Overall, I have been pleased with the pictures I have taken and feel that this camera and all of its features will be with me a long time before I outgrow it.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I did alot of reading prior to ordering this model and found that this camera has alot of bells & Whistles that take time to learn. You can use the automatic setting but you might as well use your point & Shoot for that. I purchased several books for the d80 but still found that to use this camera it would take more time than I had to spend.

The first round of photos I took and printed out turned out about the same quality as my point & shoot digital cameras.
For me I decided to step down to the D60 model which comes with 2 lenses and is smaller and lighter.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I'm using this camera for my digital photography class at Ohio State. I have a Nikon N75 and it always created awesome pictures, but I wanted to get that in digital. It was either between the D90 or the D80. I checked my budget and bought the D80. Awesome camera! A lot of bang for the buck. Very Very clear pictures. Only complaint I would have is the flash is not very strong. I have to buy a new flash sometime soon to compensate, but overall, great buy!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

After putting around 80,000 shots on my D40 (purchased it the month it came out), I decided that it was time to replace it for a new camera body. When I read about all the cameras within my price range, I saw that my old lenses would work on the D80, so purchased that body instead of another D40.
Due to severe weather I haven't had the opportunity to really put it through it's steps yet, but I have been out in below zero weather one time and am totally impressed with the clarity and detail over the D40. I also use my camera to sell glassware and goods on the internet so have been giving it a workout more on still photography, a few hundred shots so far.
So while I haven't put it through it's paces completely yet, thusfar I believe it to be superioer to the D40 in clarity and with the point focus, it is really making my still and close-up photography much clearer.

In my opinion this is the best DSLR you can get in this price range. I love having the most needed control settings available at your fingertips rather than going into the menu screens. Either way, the picture you take will come out great!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I mainly need a camera for taking photos of my 4 active kids (age range 7 months to 5 years). I kept missing photos with my old camera (Canon SX-IS) because it was so slow, but I couldn't find another point and click camera that I liked. The D80 is FAST and easy to use even for a novice like me. I was able to take photos immediately after taking the camera out of the box, and have been able to increase my use of some of the features as I go through the manual. I'm so glad I bought this camera...I thought about it for a long time as I didn't want to spend so much money (I also bought the Nikkor 18-200 AF/VR/etc. lens that sells for about $750), but I finally decided that I couldn't tolerate missing any more shots.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

All the auto or programmed exposures are wonderful but there are times when you want a picture to be the one in your imagination--and manual operation does that the best. I often wish Nikon would come out with a digital Nikon FM camera. Until they do, this is super.
We've taken trips from the Keys in Florida to fishing in Alaska and am thrilled with the results everytime. I use it at school and to take pictures of my grandchildren. And my grandson uses it to take pictures of me. It's simple and complex--depending on your level of understanding of photography. The one shortcoming I thought it had was that it does not have a self cleaning sensor. Having grown up on film, this sounded BAD. Watch the Youtube video on how to clean your sensor and that will take care of it.

I have been waiting for a long time to purchase the D80. I purchased the D80 as a companion for my D70S. It is a great camera. I have had it only three weeks but have already taken some awesome pictures. It is a great camera for the price. Wolf Camera's response to my order was flawless and fast. An outstanding transaction. I took the picture of Dwight D. Eisenhower's home in Abilene Kansas with the D80 and a NIKON 70-200mm VR lens. The detail and lighting is great.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I have an old film Nikon and I have always loved the photos I've taken with it. I have been disappointed up to now in the quality of photos I've taken with digital cameras. This has the quality of my old Nikon, plus features I never dreamed of before. I love it's lightness and durability. It's ease of use is outstanding. It took me no time whatsoever to get up to speed on it's use. If you've ever used a high quality film camera before, you will find many of it's features are either the same or intuitive.

I've had this camera for a couple of years now. I recently decided to get one for my dad because I love it so much. I've never had any problems with it. I get consistently sharp, rich photographs, and I barely know what I'm doing (which is improving). My dad is a professional photographer and loves his new camera as well. He's one of the old timer purists who loathe digital photography. Until now, that is. He loves the images that he is getting, and is amazed at all of the capabilities of this camera. I don't think that you'd regret buying one. Enjoy.

We bought this for our 16 year old daughter mainly because it has been the only item on her xmas list since October when we didn't get it for her birthday. All she has done is smile and take fantastic photos since. Valley Forge has never looked better, the traveling shots are as if we were standing still. She is amazed at the fact that it was so easy to just pick up and start learning by doing and yet just as she seems to master the camera she finds a new feature that blows her mind.

Excellent choice for first time SLR owner.

Well... nothing much to say other than this thing is [@] I've been shopping around for awhile and weighing the options with a cost/quality ratio and this beast is pretty much what I came up with. Also picked up an 18-135mm Nikkor lense. I'm still classified a "noob" to most standards but what I don't know will come in time with this. I've never owned an SLR prior, but am familiar with photography. This is pretty much exactly what I wanted, but nothing more than I needed. A delicate balance of technology. Also, Dusty Sistar rocks! Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Right after I took it out of the box I shot a wedding. I am in Pakistan so unlike USA, where wedding clothes are mostly in black and white, wedding clothes in Pakistan are full of bright colors and the result I got was stunning with excellent details. I used Nikon 18-200 mm lens which is another great buy for the money. I didn't get a chance to read the manual and considering I have been using Canon for the last 6 years it wasn't too dificult to understand the Camera menu options and I was able to figure out most without reading any documentation. I had some problem with the exposure and focusing but it was due to the fact that I didn't read the manual so I can not blame the camera for that. Picture saving was extremely fast with Sandisk Extreme III 20 MB/S card. It was a joy to have continuous shooting without a lag in saving pictures. Camera feels very solid in hand but then it is heavy so the pros becomes the cons when you have to hold it for a longer duration. For the price I have paid for this camera, due to the new D90 in the market now, it is a best buy but then I am not sure how better is D90 to this so can't judge. I was able to use my old lenses for Nikon which I used when I had the Nikon SLR almost a decade ago. All of them were compatible with the D80. Ritz is giving great discount on this camera and an unbelieveable deal for the price. I have found Ritz a great store to buy things from and their customer service is excellent !. You can't go wrong buying from Ritz if you are getting a great price for the equipment !.

I use this camera for landscapes and artsy pictures. The controls are east to use and give the user multiple options to snap their shots. For the most part though, I'm on manual all the time.

I have had problems with point and shoot digital cameras. In sunlight, I could never could seldom see the lcd screen well enough to compose a photo. Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I'm a former journalist and semi-photojournalist, and this camera is the next best thing to the Nikon D300, which is what many of the professionals use. I use my D80 for landscape, photojournalism, portraiture, and action. The colors are bright and vivid and the controls easy to use. It's just a little heavy, but it's worth it. I HIGHLY recommend this camera for the semi-pro or pro photographer who can't quite afford the D300. It's the best deal, and you'll get pro quality images.

The D80 is exactly what I expected: a top quality product with a reputation to back it up. I have also used Canon and Sony products. The Sony also was top-notch, but it doesn't have the history of dependability yet. Canon Rebel XTi does not deliver the same quality and is very unpredictable in shooting situations.

I use it with Tamron AF 18-270mm lens, which covers all my needs, so I don't have to change lenses. Still, the camera is somewhat bulky, which creates some problems when packing for travel. Other then that, it's a great camera with enough options for everybody, from fully automatic operation for novice to the choice of sophisticated setups for experienced photographer. Great camera for those who doesn't mind it's size.

I have had the D80 for quite some time and use a variety of Lenses for different kinds of events from slow weddings to fast past soccer games. For the high-end middle of the road between Point-and-Shoot Cameras to DSLRs this is a great camera. Not to many buttons for the beginner and enough functionality for the Professional.

Check out the New D90 (Upgrade to the D80) not to much has changed. Showing you the D80 is a great camera for the price. As the say, More bang for Your Buck. Plus for you new guys to DSLR, there are tons of lens from the old style to the new that the D80 can use. Just get it, you will not regret it.

Originally purchased a D60 package, had more bells and whistles, but the 3 point AF system was serious lacking, it couldn't track and focus on my very active 4 year old. Returned it for the D80 package, which, while older technology, produces much more consistent photos and is better able to focus on my daughter. I do wish the package I purchased came with a Nikkor 55-200 lens with VR rather than the off brand that was offered at the time.

As a casual user trying to move to hobbyist, this has been the best camera I have every had. I was ready to move on from the point and shoot and wanted a camera I could grow into. I have taken over 700 pictures so far and I am THRILLED beyond my wildest aspirations. The 2g sd card gets 500 pics. Any sense of movement and the shutter automatically takes multiple pictures asuring an advanced novice THE PERFECT shot. Action, night, stills I've tried it all. It's a great machine. I didn't give it five stars because I just haven't gotten to all the features yet.

I've used many different camera bodies and this is the best one yet. Many different features, good solid feel, and easy of use are just a few of the things I enjoy. I take photos for web sites, band concerts, and family. I can just hand the camera to someone, if I am performing on stage, and they can just point and shoot. I know I will still get some great shots in auto mode. Together with the Nikon lens I ordered with the body it's an over all great package.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this camera body when I decided to upgrade from the D70 I purchased a few years ago. I have been extremely happy with this camera and am glad I upgraded. I am just getting into more serious photography and learning how to go beyond the standard automatic settings and I think this camera will provide me with years of satisfactory service. The improvements over the D70 are very obvious and I have yet to find anything I don't like about it. I recommend this camera to anybody looking for an upper-level hobbyist/entry-level professional camera. It is definitely a camera such a user's skills can grow with at a very reasonable price.

i have been experimenting with this camera for about a month now and its very easy to get used to for beginners. the controls are great and placed in the most reachable areas when taking a picture. the only thing i find bad about this camera is the bracketing system can be limiting, only 3F. but that's if you want to take HDR photography and things like that. other than that this camera is a must have if you want a first DSLR because of its comfort, vast creativity opportunities, great controls, and the high quality from Nikon.

This camera has endured a lot. Plenty of mud, dust, snow, ice, and bitter cold (-50c). Right now I live and work in Antarctica and this camera has survived it all. Has also taken a few tumbles and continues to work fine. Can't say the same for the lenses.

Not to great in low light, auroras, and low light indoors. pretty grainy. I am sure the lenses have a part in that as well. New lenses coming when I get back to the states. (and probably a D300)

D80 + VR 18-55 lens
By Papa from Safety Harbor, FL on 5/22/2008
Pros:
Bright LCD, Comfortable Controls, Quiet, Small Lag Time
Cons:
preflash delay too long
Best Uses:
Art, Documentary, Fun
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Quick focus, good exposure. Our camera has a short preflash that occurs 150ms (I measured on an oscilloscope) before the main flash & shutter opening. It's supposedly used for TTL exposure compensation, but also results in flash photos of my daughter with closed eyes much of the time. I think the delay is long for this camera, and another unit tested in the mall didn't have this problem, so probably an anomaly. Otherwise, takes good photos & VR lens is worth the extra $, as you can handhold indoors with crisper results. We have an older D100 & focus is sharper on D80 & VR lens much quieter. Seems batteries are used faster in D80, probably due to larger LCD. Recommend assuming the preflash issue will be resolved in a second unit/repair.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I owned a Nikon d-50 for two years prior to buying the d-80. Wish I had bought the d80 first. Great camera for everything from family shots or travel photos. 11 point auto focus makes sport photography a snap. I use it with the NIKON 18-200 VR and the shots are clearly amazing. Controls like ISO, AF, and WB are at your fingertips so you don't even take your eye away to change them.

If you are looking for a DSLR I will definitely recomend this one, you can do so many in-camera adjustments and finishing that you will not need a PC. the camera has multiple lighting mode built in that you will not need to worry whether you have proper lighting or not, let the D80 do it for you. I did a lot of research and comparison between Nikon D80/D40x/ Olympus 510 and Canon EOS XTI, I chose the Nikon for the quality, features and strong construction. It is complicated if you are a first timer to SLR/DSLR, you will find yourself lost with so much info to learn, i will recommended to those who have use SLR or other DSLR prior in life. Good luck I hope this info helps you in your decision.

Great Camera. Not very different from a D200. With good glass you have a serious camera. If you think you want it. buy it. only problem can be the meter, which is not a big deal, just adjust for it. iso 100 is mad clean. PAst iso 800 it gets fuzzy but get a good PS plug in. Still very usable. Good size.

I've used cameras from a couple of major producers but this is my second Nikon and my first D-SLR. This thing is great! I use it of all types of photography (sports, portraits, landscapes, night, etc....) and it has yet to disappoint. The D80 feels solid in my hands and, after a little getting used to, found the control placement exceptional. The wide range of lens and other accessories mean I'm going to have this camera for a long time. I have yet to find anything about the camera that isn't up to snuff.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

This is an exceptional piece of equipment by Nikon. If you combine it with the Nikon DX 18-200 mm lens, that pretty much takes care of all of my photography needs.

The D80 snaps into action quick and immediately readies for the next shot. The focus is quick for me, and the AF does the trick in most cases. When I do snap the camera into manual mode, the controls are super intuitive. The viewfinder display makes perfect sense, even to an amatuer photographer. And the pictures taken w/ this camera are absolutely amazing. The color is vibrant and the detail is sharp (probably has something to do w/ the Nikon lenses too). About my only complaint is that it is plastic and the auto exposure tends to over expose it at times (easily fixable).

Great camera!!! Thanks for making such an intuitive DSLR for the rest of us!!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

If you've longed for a Nikon DSLR, this is the time to jump in. The D80 fits nicely between the entry-level D50 and the semi-pro / professional D200, obviously based on the D70 design but different enough to be seen as a totally new model. The camera has most every feature of the D200 [...]. And the features it lacks, you likely won't miss.FeaturesFrom the big, bright LCD screen on the back, to the high-level of customization sets, this camera finally puts Nikon back in the DSLR game. Shooting is immediate. Focusing is lightning fast. The fearlessness of the upgrades thrown into this model for the price point shows Nikon's commitment to regaining its leadership status in the prosumer market. Look and FeelThis can be personal, but I have larger hands, and while I like Canon's compact camera line, their SLRs just don't feel right in my hands. The D80 by contrast feels substantial. Buttons are big enough to locate quickly, and placed exactly where they should be. The viewfinder is big, bright and accurate, as is the LCD—the 400D is a very nice camera, but not even in the same league on these points. I'm fairly neutral to the whole Canon vs. Nikon debate, apart from the fact that I entered the SLR world about 20 years ago with a Nikon SLR. So I wanted to find a camera that would allow me to use all my old Nikon AF lenses. However, if you aren't saddled with this problem, you may just as easily go with Canon. Image quality is the same with more lenses available at cheaper prices. I prefer the build quality and ergonomics of Nikon's line vs. Canon, but I like Canon's comparable image quality and affordable lenses.A Note on LensesA camera is only as good as its lens. Most camera bodies are quite good nowadays, so my advice would be: spend a little less on your body, a little more on your lens. If you can't afford a D80 and a great lens, get a D50. The lens makes the camera. The kit lenses that come with the D80 aren't terrific, though they're no worse than those that come with some Canon bodies. However, if you really want to turn your camera into a force of nature, go with the nikkor 18-200VR lens. It's about $[...], almost as much as the camera itself, but it's sharp as a tack through the entire range, and it has VR or vibration reduction, which actually enhances your camera's ability to take pictures in lower light (you can shoot at lower ISOs with less shake, and therefore, improved sharpness). Add that to the fact that you can shoot really wide angle and impressive zoom all in one lens, and you've built yourself an enviable photo package without having to lug a ton of gear around. The lens is so good, and Nikon's production speed so poor, that there's a 6-month waiting list for the lens. But it's well worth the wait.ValueThe last issue is price. In my opinion, the D80's customization, performance, build quality and design are worth the price. The EOS 400D is $[...] cheaper and a very good camera. But if you're a more discerning photographer who can see the bonuses you get with the D80 you'll consider your money well spent.

I've owned several Nikon products and while none have ever disapointed me, this one has definitely gone above and beyond all of the others. The D80, unlike many other consumer level DSLRs, provides a professional level product at an excellent price! I've used mine to shoot weddings, portraits, nature, and anything else I feel like. Nikon really loaded this one!

The white balance is so accurate. I have Canon 5D and nikon D50. Compared with them, I still like the D80. Original I thought, there is no way for D80 to beat 5D. Seriously, D80 rocks. Maybe it has better technology.

Meter is subpar to D200
Best Uses:
Everyday
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

When I bought the D80, it was a screaming good deal. For only $[...], I got almost all of the features of the $[...] D200. Lots and lots of good stuff from the D200 was incorporated into the D80. And some things are even better. SD cards are FAR superior to CF. The compact flash cards eventually can cause pins to get bent inside a camera. They are very delicate. The SD cards are easier to deal with and smaller. On the other hand, the D80 did NOT get the D200's meter. The meter in the D80 can be a dog! Don't plan on using "Auto" or "P" mode for shooting in a dark room with the built-in flash. The i-TTL-BL metering underexposes everything terribly. This requires a good bit of exposure compensation. The meter is pretty unpredictable. This is something that I hope will be addressed in a firmware correction. Once they dropped the price of the D200, I was disappointed that I didn't wait a little longer and just buy a 200. But in the end, the D80 is an easy, satsifying camera to use so long as you have enough know-how to get the meter to work properly.

This is an exceptionally responsive camera. Battery life is UNBELEIVABLE. I highly recommend purchasing the sb800 external flash, for truly perfect indoor shots. The onboard flash is fine, but with the external one, your indoor shots are perfectly lit

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Overall - an excellent camera. I'm using the 18-200 Nikon DX VR lens and would highly recommend this combination. It was tuff getting use to not having the image previewed on the LCD screen prior to taking a picture. Was disappointed that the camera cannot charge the battery (battery must be removed and charged on a separate charger).

This camera is VeriPic compatible because the VeriPic drivers for it are already available. This is a good camera for the professional forensic or law enforcement photographer. I really love the beautiful LCD display.

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Love my D-80. It performs better than my D100. The images are cleaner, more vivid and more accurately represent what I saw when I took the picture. I was looking for a backup camera - and now I consider it to be the prime camera. Easy to operate - takes great pictures, wonderful resolution, especially like the great flexibility in the controls. I can do almost everything I need to as a Pro Photographer and Retoucher.

Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Pros:
Accurate Colors, Great Resolution, Nice Features and Settings
Best Uses:
Everyday, Low Lighting, Outdoors, Portraits, Sports/Action, Travel, Weddings/Events

Comments about Nikon Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I upgraded from a Nikon D50 to the D80. I have found that it does a fantastic job with accurate color, low noise even at very high ISO settings. It gives most of the options of the D200 for [...]less.

I liked the size of the D200 better, but it was also much heavier. The D80 is a bit larger than the D50 but close to the same weight (by hand). I have found that there are many useful new features that I now miss when I use the D50.

If you are looking for something more than an entry level dSLR get the D80!
