Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

Great little flash only uses two AA batteries. Recycle time is good with eneloop batteries. Does not have a built in diffuser but you can angle the flash for bounce. Overall, much better than built in flash on my D5000.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

The other reviews helped me to select this flash for my D50. I got it yesterday, played with it last night, and within a week I will test it out on the job. Easy to use, a great flash unit. Ordering this flash was fine until India tech support called to confirm the order with me. As if, I was going to give personal information to overseas. I placed the order and am watching my bank account. So far, it's OK. Message to Ritz: Secure the software, and stop with the phone calls.

This flash is a good step up from the built-in flash on my Nikon D60. The ability to tip the unit up gives a good variety of lighting options. This entry-level model wouldn't be the flash to choose for professional work, but I suspect it will suit my needs very well. I love how quiet it is and how easy it is to use!

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

I ponied up the money for this flash based on an independent article I read, and I wasn't disappointed at all! For such a small flash (and powered by 2 "AA" batteries at that) this has turned out to be very versatile and is my 'go-to' flash for almost any occasion. It's very lightweight, the lens rotates upward for bouncing off of a ceiling, has a short recycle time, the burst mose comes in handy for quick follow-up shots, and it has decent power for some night shots.
It obviously does not have the 'oomph' required for, say, a large concert hall or a wide night shot, but crank up the ISO and it covers most situations nicely. I'd also like to see a swivel so I can bounce those vertical shots; where I can do so I just zoom out some and then crop as needed. Well worth the price!!!

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

The best flash for the money out there! Built like a jewel, unlike other "budget" models. Perfect for the enthusiast with a D40, D60 or similar. Not the best for very low-light settings, and keep in mind that it will not swivel for vertical shots with bounce. That's OK, I crop in iPhoto or Aperture later. Pretty good recycle time, but not enough for applications like sports photography. WAY, WAY better than your DSLR's built-in flash. I use mine all the time.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

The SB-400 Speedlight is easy to use, very compact & lightweight, but with plenty of flash. It coordinates itself with my Nikon D40x to provide additional flash power. So far, because it is so small and compact, I have kept it attached to the camera and have used it for every flash photo.

Best Uses:
Fill Flash, General Use
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

The flash is awesome until I try to take the picture vertically. Then I realize the flash cannot tilt to bounce off the ceiling. I have to remember to only take the pictures horizontally if I want to bounce the flash off the ceiling and crop it afterward. The flash is light and that's the reason why I bought it in the first place. But I might think about a better flash in the future once I become a more serious photographer.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

I use this on my Nikon D300. Even though the D300 has a built in flash this is better particularly for wide angle shots. It is very helpful for group shots with a wider angle lens. It cuts out the dark corners. Nifty little process for angling the flash for bounce shots. I particularly like the size (small) and weight. When I was doing flash with film years ago I hated the large flash and weight they created. This is a great little flash. I see no reason to go to larger Nikon flashes (600,800) unless you are doing a lot of portrait work, etc. or larger outdoor night shots.

Small flash Big difference
By PhotomomVerified Purchaser from Homer Glen, IL on 9/9/2008
Pros:
Consistent Output, Easily Interchangeable, Fast Recycling, Lightweight
Best Uses:
General Use, Portraits
Describe Yourself:
Casual user

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

I was not sure such a little item would make a difference, but the color and quality of the pictures is huge. I just shot some practice shots when I got it and bounced the light off the ceiling. It softened the picture and the color was right on. Because it is so light and little I will be packing it and taking it on trips.

It's ok
By lsmithphotographyVerified Purchaser from Citrus Heights, CA on 8/20/2008
Pros:
Durable, Good for close objects, Lightweight, Portable
Cons:
Doest span as far as said
Describe Yourself:
Semi-Professional
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

It's a nice little portable flash and would work for someone just getting started or who will only use it on objects that are fairly close. The flash does not extend as far as it states and when you shoot vertical shots you can't bounce it off the ceiling so that is a little frustrating. It produces nice natural light though on close objects and is a good addition to have. I personally would like to upgrade to the 600 or the 800.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

This flash is easy to use, nothing fancy but provides decent lighting with the bounce feature. No more red eye pictures. Not as powerful as the sb-600/800 obviously but for the average user and starter, this is probably a better buy than some of the other high end flashes. You can't go wrong with this flash.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

I am just starting to take wedding portraits, and this flash is so natural compared to pop up flash. However it eats through batteries, and only lasts through half of a wedding. I also noticed that I need to upgrade to a inferred auto focus, so I can actually use it at night, because it is horrible for low light settings. ONe last plus though, is you can rotate the flash to bouce off ceilings.

Bounce Flash Eliminates Red Eye
By Greg the PhotobugVerified Reviewer from Milwaukee on 1/16/2007
Pros:
Durable, Good Value, High Quality
Best Uses:
Indoor Photos, Parties, Portaits
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

I've shot a couple of hundred indoor photographs with the SB 400 so far, and what impresses me most is the "bounce flash" feature. You can tilt the light portion of the flash head at a number of angles, including straight up, so that the flash does not wash out the scene or create red eye. Instead the room is bathed in indirect light that creates natural shadows and no red eye. The results for even an amateur are amazing. Yes, its also small and well integrated into the camera, so that you wouldn't mind just leaving it on the hot shoe much of the time. But take just a few shots with the head tilted up and you'll be sold.

By Mere_Image from Midwest on 12/24/2006
Pros:
Clever, Durable, Ergonomical, Good Value, High Quality
Cons:
Moderate power
Best Uses:
Bounce Flash, Ultra Wide Lenses

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

Clever flash unit that you'll want to keep on your camera (looks good; light weight). Works very well for typical shots, but not a SB-600/800 in terms of power and function. A very nice flash to have even to accompany a more sophisticated flash unit. Simple operation that performs very well, as do all the Nikon flash units!

Pros:
Convenient, Cute, Durable, Easy to use, Good Value, High Quality, Small
Best Uses:

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash:

This flash rocks! No more huge top heavy flash needed for the average photographer! Speedy connection and works like a charm. Tilts for bounce, no swivel but not a problem. Nice carry-all must have. Couldn't be happier.
This is perfect especially for the Nikon D40!
