Further development of Canon's flagship Speedlite has led to the production of the 580 EX II. This is the premier Speedlite for all photographers, including professionals. Newly designed to match with the EOS-1D Mark III in terms of improved dust- and water-resistance, body strength, and the ability to control flash functions and settings from the camera menu (EOS-1D Mark III only). Other features include improved communication reliability through its direct contacts, and recycling time is both 20% shorter than the 580EX and is completely inaudible.

Canon Speedlite 580EX II Features

  • Approx. 20% faster recycling time compared to 580EX
  • Superior build quality, including a metal foot for higher rigidity
  • Max. Guide No. 58 at 105mm setting (GN 190, feet)
  • Auto conversion of flash coverage with compatible digital SLR cameras
  • White Balance info communicated instantly to compatible digital SLR cameras
  • Full swivel, 180-degrees in either direction
  • AF-assist beam, compatible with all AiAF points on every EOS SLR
  • Dust- and water- resistance to match the EOS-1D Mark III

Comments about Canon Canon 580 EX II Speedlite Flash:

This is my second Speedlite. I gave my old one to my grand daughter and got this one when I got my new camera. I like it very much. The old one was great and I really didn't need a new one, but I wanted my grand daughter to have one also. She loves hers to.

Comments about Canon Canon 580 EX II Speedlite Flash:

I've found that this flash unit is quite effective with consistent light output. It has been put to use in the studio as well as on location for general fill lighting. I find that the ability to use it as a primary flash and wireless sync the 430EX II as a slave for fill lighting is invaluable. The rapid recycle times prove more than adequate when attempting to capture several moments in rapid succession.

My one issue with this was the built in bounce card which seemed to get stuck and now seems to simply fall out.
