Sometimes manuals can be difficult to follow. This one seemsvery clear and helpful when getting back into the use of a slr camera. Must have.

I love this guide because it really is so much more thorough than the user guide that came with my camera. Great reference guide. I keep it in my camera bag at all times!

This is a difficult book! It presents the very basic information at a basic, though not simple, level...much like the manual that comes with the camera. Everything else it presents at such a level that a beginner...at least this beginner... can't follow. There is no middle ground!! Having used the camera for a year, I know something about it. When I read that information, I understand it perfectly...because I already know it! Everything else...two pages or even less, and I'm lost! It contains all that you'd ever want to know about this camera. It seems to be very complete...I think. But it certainly does not lead you by the hand towards a better understanding. It is written at a professional-or-advanced-amateur level. It can certainly be used for reference, if you already know and understand the question you want to ask, but to read it from cover to cover would be impossible...at least for me. If you are a beginner and want a good understanding of the camera, I'd greatly suggest the Magic Lantern DVD on this camera. Same publisher but the presentation and usefulness for the beginner are as different as night and day!
The author does put "Hints" in gray and these are often useful. If the entire book were written in that sort of from-me-to-you format, seeking to teach and not just to dump information, it would be far easier and more useful! I'd recommend it to an advanced friend, but not to a beginner friend!

I strongly recommend this small, but condensed primer for your Nikon D40. Use it along with Nikon's instruction book to learn about the details of your camera. It's written by a professional photographer who share his insights specific to dSLR and the Nikon D40. The book is attractive and well organized--that's why I bought it on sight when I saw it behind the counter at [...]. Comes with a laminated tri-fold pocket guide.
